A Nation Divided: A Civil War Officer’s Journey (WIP) [814k w/o commands| Updated 8/19/26 - Open Beta!]

Thank you, I hope so too! I already have a pair of opening quotes that go together:

“It is well that war is so terrible, lest we should grow too fond of it.” - General Robert E. Lee

“War is all hell.” - General William T. Sherman

I have a lot of other ideas for it, some of which I’ve had since around 1997. The choice of which side to be on is a highly personal one, determined by siding either with your family or with the woman you love.

I like it!

i wouldve appreciated the option of further deciding what your life was going to be like after the war like having children, actually making political decisions etc

I think that would be a good idea also how history remembers your character.

Small typo

The Confederates are beaten in your front, but a beaten enemy with artillery is still an enemy, and now their guns answer the embankment. A battery unlimbers on a far rise, beyond rifle range, and begins to search the railroad grade with shell, the rounds coming in with that rising shriek that flattens veterans into the dirt and turns a green man’s bowels to water. The first shells burst long, throwing up gouts of red Virginia clay. They will not burst long for long. A good gunner walks his fire onto a target, and these are good gunners.

Hey I just recently started playing your game and dear lord it is amazing, and with how unbelievably long it is i can tell you’ve been working your butt of of this masterpiece, overall best game I’ve played since Aura clash and path-of-martial-arts-if, but I am curious to know if you plan to add a sort of cheat menu or god mode in the game, cause I want to make Grant look at me in shock as I obliterate confederate lines with just a glance

@RedizE still playing lol taking longer than have wanted but I have noticed some issues but nothing game breaking an of the issues of the early portions of the game most have been resolved. So great job on those fronts if I get a chance will make a list of things so you can fix as you will the things ive noticed so far that have a need for it.

With that out of the way though I have not finished my playthrough im currently in the last winter of the war. And have been testing some choices all the way through to see what science I might get from them. I half to say I greatly enjoy the new things that have been added that I have found so far in particular the scenes involving Harrington and Hox in relation to my character they have brought me great satisfaction. So very much well done for now that’s where I will leave things until im done with this play through and have made a list of things.

Update 08/19/26

Patch 3 out. This one’s mostly about weight.

Choices cost more now. Most blocks have been expanded, pulling you in different directions. Somebody’s usually unhappy with whatever you pick, the people it lands on are people you know. A few things you do will follow you a long way further than they used to.

Checkpoint system added.

The men talk more, and they disagree with you more.

Brigade command is an actual arc instead of a few lines. You’ll see

Wounds accumulate. The war adds up on your body now, and the game remembers every time you were hit. This was a system under development prior, now it’s implemented mostly.

Rebalanced the difficulty across all three acts. Act II and Act III in particular were punishing you harder than intended.

The epilogue is a lot bigger. What your life becomes after the war is decisions now instead of narration. Your household, your family, what you do with the peace. Two post-epilogue sequences that only open depending on the path you took. And a final reckoning that reads your entire record back to you: what you were decorated for, what you did that you’d rather not discuss, who you actually were as an officer, and what gets written down about you.

Plus a stack of continuity fixes and the feedback (thank you!) from last patch is all in there.

More stuff I’ll let ya’ll find.

New word count:~814k words, ~960k with commands

I hope you submit this soon I’d love to see it in the store. War especially historical novels are a rarity on CoG and HG. I played the demo and absolutely love it. I do wish my home state of RI was an option we had the 2nd RI Volunteers that served 61-65 and fired in the first volley at Bull Run. I actually am a part of their reenactment group. I was the poor sucker carrying the company flag that year

Also if you were at all curious about their involvement I’d be more than happy to refer you to my buddy who organizes most of it. Getting him to shut up would be the hardest part I’m sure

Does anyone know which values decide whether player officer suffers an injury and when company officers die?

From what it appears to me it’s picking properly rather than a specific option or stat. General rule of thumb in any book pick choices that align with your strongest stats for best results. Some make it simple and present the choices in the same order your stats appear on the stat page

it is definitely connected to a stat, i tested it, I’m just not sure which causes it.

If your stats are high enough, you probably won’t get injured at all, and if some are lower, then you’ll suffer injuries, sometimes your junior officers (Captains and ect) will also die

I’m trying to figure it out because i want to keep certain stats deliberately low so that i may experience the story bit differently. (I.e. suffering injuries despite a successful action/engagement, ect.)

Is there a reason why Company C can no longer stop the Confederate artillery at Falling Waters anymore?

Also some of the paragraphs in the prologue still need spaces between them, to make for easier reading.

The Falling Waters checks are dependent on player/unit stats as well as who you pick.

On this play through my stats page keeps indicating my physical condition deteriorating even though the game does not describe my character being wounded at any juncture. This is an odd juxtaposition.

@RedizE started a new play through and right near the humpnive noticed new things and has me wanting to try them all put just to see what might be different both in the immediate and long term. Lol on a more serious note got to thinking the casualty tracker youve implemented only refers to confirmed dead correct? Not sure if you allready are or not or how difficult it would be to code in would love to see a wounded tracker as well if for no other reason than to track how many men we acctually have to use in a fight. Since veteren regiment is allready small it has me wondering sometimes.
