A Nation Divided: A Civil War Officer’s Journey (WIP) [196k w/o commands| Updated 3/8/25]

I’m trying to raise my martial prowess via the console but it refuses my input (stats.martialprowess=100)

Can someone tell me why it won’t work?

I had a look at the code and think it is shorthanded to just martial try stats.martial=100

it does with kiwi browser

Yeah got it

I have a problem regarding the writing and it is one that has been expressed:

While it is good writing, the MC is reading too much into things and knows too much in what the others are expressing. I think he should be made more clueless (this is war after all, we don’t have time to analyze other peoples’ emotions). I’m getting slight AI vibes.

Other than that, all good!

I think it’d be best if you don’t bring the matter of AI at all, I had a discussion about it in here from 170-181 and it ended with an admin saying the following

"Hi all,

The forums are not the appropriate channel to raise concerns about AI generated text in WIPs. If you have such concerns, send them and any evidence that you have to submissions@hostedgames.org. Raising the topic here is insulting to authors, will not reach the attention of the people who would need to be aware of it, and only serves to derail threads.

Thank you."

Yes I remember and I don’t mean to insinuate that AI was used. The MC just looks too perceptive in regards to emotions and it takes me out of the immersion.

Personally, I don’t mind AI being used in writing — in fact, I think writers should use it. If the writer reviews, edits, and adds to the text, it actually helps them write faster, lightens the load, and boosts their overall output. That means we, the readers, benefit too — more books, more good stuff for everyone. Of course, it’s important to use AI wisely so the atmosphere and quality of storytelling don’t suffer.

That said, this is just my personal opinion. I might be overlooking some hidden pitfalls or long-term consequences — ethical concerns, creative risks, that kind of thing. Everyone has their own reasons to be cautious or skeptical, and I totally get that.

I’m fine if writers use AI for grammar checks since that is a pain to watch out for, especially for people whose English is not their main language.

@RedizE I found a odd bug

Idk if it specifically hapoens to 24 yr old MC or to the others.

Before the bug happens, I do my picking of best, strong and kinda strong abilities, military acumen is my best in this case.

The problem is that once I choose the inevitable command ability debuff to continue the story, the game suddenly shifts my best ability to “martial prowess” as if I had picked martial prowess since the start (which ofc didn’t happen), so I hope this bug gets resolved.

I’ve noticed stat insconsistencies with just about every other choice type

Like 1st prowess, 2nd acumen, 3rd command ability and 4th social grace for example.

And so on…

Btw this text section repeats

This text repeating happens too with the composite regiments

There’s also the fact that in this image if you read closely you’ll notice that the mc repeats to the soldiers that the regiment has been drilling and training twice. (The word “training” isn’t used in the first paragraph but I think my point stands)

Btw, Sujan pointed out that something similar happens with artillery.

I’ve discovered another text repetition issue AGAIN, this time with the fact that the mc says twice that the elite regiment had lost many men.

Ooh! Having delved into the code to try and create an optimal character and regiment, I believe I can actually explain that! Picking your age as young or senior causes stat modifications (24 year old gets a +10% martial bonus, -10% acumen penalty, and -5% command penalty, 38 year old gets the opposite), but the modifiers aren’t implemented until after ranking your abilities from best to worst. I imagine this was a decision to have you set your “baseline” stats before having the game calculate how they’re altered by your age.

Well, that explains why.

Do you think it was a good idea to implement it that way?

Btw I’d like to point out a odd inconsistency in the writing.

The MC officer wakes up and is greeted by Lieutenant Winters, who tells him that the regiment received marching orders as a result of first corps engaging confederate forces northwest of Gettysburg while we were asleep and that Preston was looking for me.

But after that, a corporal comes in urgency to report almost the exact same thing (having to commence marching) and the MC is embarrassed at “being caught unprepared” as if he had instantly forgot about what Winters told him.
It’s not even coherent, considering that saying “the situation?” in this case would mostly make sense if the corporal said the word “situation” somewhere around his dialogue, but he didn’t!

This WIP seems a bit rushed out, something I’m not surprised at if you were here when the author was making big updates almost daily.

I assumed that meant “overslept, had to rush”.

Well, it turns out that wasn’t the case.

What’s up with the author now, he hasn’t published anything for almost two months now?

It’s only been about a month, but overall I suppose RED is simply busy with their irl stuff.

yeah most likely that’s true and if I remember correctly this story has been on his mind for years. This is probably the point of the story that he has gone past his years of brain storming material and has to develop new concepts to keep the story going which is hard to do.
