Oh you definitely put her through quite a bit. And yet, I’m feel like Leon might have gotten put through the worse when compared to her (and I say this as someone who is mainly romancing Illya). At least Illya and Saine could take some comfort in the fact their faith in MC was not in vain and they did their best to try helping MC escape death. And Illya’s last words to a MC who is in a romance with her can be that of love, which can be echoed back by the MC themselves (which my MC did. And it hurt. But he wanted to at least be able to say the one truth he could out loud).
Leon though?
His lack of faith in MC (while understandable) was what ultimately got them killed. His last words were to tell his friend/lover that he intended to have them executed and possibly even called them a demon to their face. He went into that cell never intending to listen to them, but to get his own emotions out on MC, who unfortunately had no way to truly defend or explain themselves. Had Leon kept a cool enough head, not allowed himself to be swept away by the emotional high of the people, and listened to the other members of White Fang, there may have been a chance he could have discovered the truth himself much sooner with their help. But he didn’t; and in his choice to burn MC, he too burned the bridges he had with his brother and Illya and may not even be able to step foot near Aunt Bess’ place without receiving a frying pan to the face.. Now Leon has to live with the fact that his hands are the most stained with MC’s blood and he’s (right now) alone on a throne since his choice had heavily damaged his relationships with the former White Fang members (which probably gets especially awkward since Saine and him are technically sharing a space).
I really feel the most sorry Leon because of all that burden. I could only imagine just how hard it hit him when he got that letter and how haunted he got from remembering the last words he ever said to MC. Yet such consequences were ones Leon undeniably called upon himself the moment he sealed MC’s fate and just as his reasons for heavily believing MC to be a cruel, murderous demon at the time were understandable, so too is the price he has to pay for his actions and why some close to him now keep their distance. I do consider it Leon’s saving grace that once he knew the truth, he did not attempt to hide it in any way and did his own part in making sure the stain on MC’s name was wiped (although a bit too late).
I am very curious to see how following interactions may play out with her after MC wakes up from their nap. She had her reasons for believing the worse of MC and was one of the ones that probably argued the strongest for MC’s execution, but at the same time she was always inclined to have doubts on MC too (which would probably explain why she had not looked into the matter deeper despite being a spy; she probably felt like she had seen enough) and much like Leon, had no intentions of ever really listening to them from the looks of it. Now Ante is aware of the truth and…well, yeah that might get a tad awkward for a royal spy to be in the same place as the MC. I wonder what her relationship in particular is like now with Illya and Saine; she did after all prevent the two from saving MC from the execution depending on certain choices.
Now onto other opinions:
the opening of the story alone had caught my interest when I first came across it. I was so curious about what was going on, watching MC being walked to their execution and seeing the different emotions being directed toward them. On one hand, I was seeing the public eager to see MC burned for whatever they were accused of, yet on the other hand, the soldiers didn’t treat MC all that roughly as they set up the preparation for the burning (I am not sure if that was due to the soldiers doing the tasks actively choosing against being cruel to MC in their final moments or if it was a direct order from Leon not to handle MC roughly). The king had little affection for the MC at that point and purposely had the execution be a public affair, and yet held back from making even bigger show of the matter by simply proceeding with the burning without a speech. I was at the edge of my seat curious to see how it all the past events unfold into the present time and especially loved watching it play out as MC’s life flashing before their eyes.
And by the end of it? My heart broke for everyone involved except for Sister, she can sit on a pile of hot coals. Feel like the experience will be quite scarring for my MC once the resurrection takes places and some notable parts of him were scorched in that fire (like the softer parts of his personality). I don’t think he’ll hold back from being a lot more curt with Leon (who he sees as not being sincere in his claim that he trusted MC) and DEFINITELY will be much more harsh and impatient if he ever has to interact with Ante (who he’d probably mock as being a poor spy who failed to find the truth of the matter due to be blinded by her unwavering negative bias toward him) after the event.
