(WIP) Those Long Dead

Trying to write daily for December in order to make more progress. Hoping I have a good chunk more to share sometime soon!

Launched an official Revolt (opensource Discord alternative) server for Those Long Dead just now, link is in the main post! Please join if you’d like!

Unfortunately hosting on Revolt didn’t go as well as I’d hoped, so I’ve moved the server over to Discord after all. Link in main post has been changed to reflect this!

@aevumgames The feature list mentions “manifestation of soul powers”. Can you describe or list all the available (and future) soul powers we can pick?

I can give you a rundown of my current list, yeah! The choice of powers isn’t implemented yet in the demo (we haven’t gotten quite that far yet), but I can tell you my plans for it.

So basically, while normal soul mages can learn all kinds of spells of different types, angels tend to have a specific elemental domain that’s kind of their ‘brand’ so-to-speak. My currently planned list of domains for the player to choose from is water, light, life, fire, void, wind, and earth. Each one is intended to have its own unique variables written in throughout the story.

I hope that answers your question!

I’m guessing Void either use Shadows or Portals or a mix of both?

Actually for that one, the name isn’t very literal, and it focuses more on raw magical force than an element per se. In this universe, all magic comes from the soul, but the void domain takes that idea even further, pushing the absolute limits of what soul magic is capable of. It’s a very rare domain that has abilities that aren’t nearly as well-known or understood as the other domains. But, to answer your question, void domain would be more using pure power and magical force to fight or manipulate the world. One type of manipulation would be a portal through space, true, but it’d be more of a vacuum or a tear in the world than a ‘portal’, if that makes sense? It’s kind of like the brute-force method, but a school of magic.

So, basically, someone using Void magic could make something similar to a black hole open up to consume something or make a powerful, single target blast against something? Also, will this game feature battle pets of any kind?

The first one would take an insanely powerful soul mage, but the second one is pretty standard for void domain, yeah!

I’m not familiar with the term ‘battle pets’, but if you’re talking about like an animal that fights alongside you, I have no plans for that currently, no. :pensive:

Hi guys! I decided I should probably actually make a post about my plans for Those Long Dead’s overall development, and the process I plan to go through. Essentially, I want TLD to have a several chapter long public demo (definitely including chapters 1 & 2, possibly more depending on pacing), and then once that is reasonably polished and presentable, I plan to move to alpha builds shared through Patreon tiers, that are updated as development progresses.

That said, I have gone ahead and published an early Patreon page under the same username as here (aevumgames), as I’m going to start making weekly, patreon-exclusive progress updates on how development is going, with occasional preview snippets of scenes. The link will be put into the main post if you want to check it out!

Just an update, I’m chipping away at an update for the demo still! Also I fixed the Discord server link in the main post, it seems to have broken at some point?

I’m sad to announce this (but also very excited), but after a lot of thought, I have decided to move my work on Those Long Dead into Twine instead of Choicescript. This is because, as much as I adore Choicescript games, Twine has such a high level of visual customization that I really want to incorporate into Those Long Dead. Because of this, I have moved this thread into the Other Interactive Fiction category (which I believe is what I’m supposed to do? Mods please correct me if I’m wrong).

I will have an updated demo published soon though, in it’s Twine form, which I’m very excited about!
