[WIP] Mantle: Mask on (Character-driven superhero story) [375,000+ words]

Yeah–sorry to everyone who thought the update was already out, lmao!

I guess I kinda forgot that not everyone reads dates the same…

Still, if anything, it just builds more anticipation to come back and play the actual update, huh? Right?

Whoops…

Update is coming on September 8th.

This is so very sweet!! :white_heart:

I’ve always said, it’s the characters I want to come first—I really want them to feel real and lovable—and it still surprises me that I apparently succeeded, lmao. Like, I spend so much time trying my best, and it always feels like I’m not quite getting there.

Which is why I’m always so happy when I get to have a round of feedback again—because it works wonders to assuage my fears! Maybe not quite completely, but that can’t be helped, lol.

Also, I don’t think I’ve ever had a compliment angled around the slums of Argentina before, so congratulations to you for that.

Hopefully people will like what I’ve done with the characters in this new update—when it comes out on the 8th of September.

Because it’s not out yet.

It is not out.

Just, you know, though I’d make that clear, rather than make a stupid mistake and cause a whole bunch of confusion…

Because I wouldn’t do that.

Not at all.

No, sir…

Hehe no worries I figured that it’s not out yet. I just wanted to tell you my opinion about your work. Of course i will comment after I read the update. But considering your work up until now, I have my hopes very high!

I loved the concept, but I have a serious problem with lack of control and the player agency in the game. Many times the main character speaks and even have full conversations without any input. So I gonna be honest, this doesn’t feel like a game that wants to be played.

I can understand your frustration with that, and it’s always a struggle to keep a strong narrative going whilst also allowing the player ample input—a struggle I don’t always get right—but I feel to say the game “doesn’t want to be played” is quite harsh.

I think the longest period of writing a scene for me is always filling out the player choice sets. This may bite me in the ass, I’ve come to realise—because, on a longer page, it might look like you get no input—but, actually, half of that still comes from the choice you picked.

And, for the overall process of plotting the game, I’m constantly working on where to slot in story-affecting choices, and then where I can position meaningful consequences later down the line. Also, Brain/Brawn routes and customization flavours.

Basically, though: I want this game to be played. Well, I certainly am trying, lol.

Did you play the whole thing?

This is my first time playing this WIP, and I have to say the story, character interactions, and humor are all really enjoyable. By the way, I wanted to ask, what are the MC’s powers? What exactly do Brawn and Brain mean? I chose the Brawn prologue, where the MC is bulletproof?Besides being bulletproof, what other abilities does the MC have?

First of all, I’d like to apologize if what I wrote came across as too harsh, that wasn’t my intention. I struggle with written messages, and English isn’t my first language. Secondly, yes, I played the entire game. I felt that at certain moments, the game took away my freedom of choice when the main character was doing things of lesser importance, however, I feel those choices are essential for making the character truly feel like my character, which, in my opinion, is the most important thing in IF games. This all my opnion, I’m not a professional on this kind of thing.

Don’t worry about it—I get this is just a discussion:)

Did you have any specific examples of moments where you wish you had more control?

Hi, thanks!

The MC’s powers are super strength and durability. This should hopefully become more obvious as the story progresses.

Brain and Brawn are both aspects available to the MC—though choosing one over the other merely decides which the character favours the most.

Brain MC is strong—but they don’t think with their muscles.

Brawn MC isn’t stupid—but they rely on their physical prowess for problem solving.

Hope that helps

Thank you for the explanation :folded_hands:t2: I have another question, where did the MC get their superpowers from? Will the origin of their powers be explained later?

I have some examples, but I can’t screenshot right now to go case by case because I hella busy this week. So I gonna just say one for now. Let the player chose why MC decided to become a vigilante. Revenge, justice, tired of cops incopetence, pettyness or something else, this flavour would make the MC feel like the player’s character, it doesn’t matter if it is inconsequential on the grand scheme of things since all have the same end, that MC being a vigilante, but that what would make people who didn’t care about the game care and who already care love the game.

Can’t say I agree. Until the origin of the MC’s powers is revealed, it hardly matters why they became a vigilante. So far as I can say, just waking up one fine day with the ability to accidentally pulverize your night stand is reason enough to be inspired to apply such power to something good. That’s my own take, since the MC’s motivation doesn’t feel like as big a concern at this moment.

Don’t want to speak for the author here and I might be talking out of my ass since it’s been over a year since I first played the IF, but I’m actually getting the feeling the reason why we became a vigilante won’t actually be minor at all, which would be a good reason for making it a set one if so. Though as usual if our MC has to do something no matter what, it would be a good idea to let us choose how to feel about it at least, as it gives back some agency.

Anyways, I’m not sure if I’ve commented in this IF before but super excited for the update. I played it when it first released over a year ago (or on December? I don’t remember lol) and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since, been checking the tumblr at least once a week since. I admit I’m a little more partial to worlds where superheroing is already established as another facet of society, but you can’t go wrong with playing as potentially the first (and perhaps only) superhero, especially when you nail the vibes so well. There’s always something fun and engaging about seeing a hero come into their own and having to figure everything out with no help, gives it a very scrappy sort of vibe. Reminds me of the Nolan Batman movies and ESPECIALLY the Raimi Spider-Man movies.

220,000+ words of new content await!

Right now.

Contains Chapter 2, pt.2 and Chapter 3 in its entirety.

Continue exploring your mundane life and vigilante excursions as you try to maintain the balance of both sides. Meanwhile, find that neither responsibility is going to make this easy for you.

It might be that writing the definition of a hero was more complicated than you thought.

>Play Now!

Featuring…

  • Some one-on-one bonding time with your bestie as you both continue to settle into life at apartment 314.
  • Taking the law into your own two hands as you battle a fully-booked den of angry criminals.
  • Boring work at RF South, making progress on the company’s deal with Cutguard Hardware. Yawn.
  • A long-awaited confrontation with the third and final of the city’s most infamous and dangerous criminal gangs.
  • A social trial, otherwise known as a prolonged conversation with the Heir to New Cronaca.
  • A social vacuum, otherwise known as trying to get any conversation out of a timid delivery driver.
  • The reappearance of a tenacious police deputy.
  • A new arrival at apartment 314.
  • The reveal of a sinister truth.
  • A whole lot of superhero action and drama in between.

Also…

  • Updated character index with new entries.
  • Added the ability to display RO attraction scores on the stats page, with the options to toggle specific characters.
  • New bonus content accessible via a menu on the stats page. (You’ll recognise them if you’ve closely followed the Tumblr).
  • Bisexual players can now change the ROs’ genders at will until the end of Chapter 1. (How’s that for a superpower?)

Attention: There won’t be a ‘skip’ available for the new content, as it’s very much a continuation of the original release—the two halves making up all of Act 1. Such an option will be available for future updates, hopefully you understand

I’m so excited to play the update, but may I tell you how hard I side-eyed this bullet point?! I DO NOT trust.

Loving the new update! The conversations with Redfern are always a highlight for me, no matter what option I pick it feels like I’ve just failed a speech check! Truly the social equivalent of a dark souls boss.

Things are not looking so great with the Hero and the bestie in my run. And it’s not going to get much better on my account as I am enjoying the drama, sorry Hero! On the other hand, possible crime fighting bestie Detective Lee? You win some you lose some

Loved everything regarding the update, but the highlights are definitely:

• MC and B’s relationship straining like the belt buckle of a fat guy trying to convince the world they are healthy;

• MC and Redfern’s dynamic being that of two dogs, one of them a grumply old lady and the other being a golden retriever in contrast;

• Detective Lee is a delight in every form they are in, and quite useful as well! Like an actual freaking detective.

And most importantly, our first tryst at the Ever Hotel was great, got our taste of what the MC failing means. In most superhero IF’s, the most common antagonist is a villain, but in this world we are the only one of our kind, and that is precisely our enemy as well.

Exudes much more of a helpless feeling when you are surrounded than a fight with your regular Joe-Bad-Guy.

I was wondering—when B asks you to tell the truth about what you’re actually doing, once they finally find out it wasn’t work-related, I see there’s an option to actually tell the truth. Can that option be unlocked somehow? or is it just there to express something like: “I really want to be honest, but I feel like I can’t” ?

Other thoughts:

  • Assigned best-friend. Be very careful about assuming affection and overriding players’ reactions to this character; sometimes, no matter how much you care for a person (you can’t pick family, for example) they do something that just grinds your gears. And you grit your teeth, or snarl, or whatever your reaction may be – but it is your reaction in that situation. Friends are the ones you choose. Be certain to leave space for players to react naturally to characters, going forward. Just because authors want their character to be liked for the narrative, does not mean a player will actually like them, either overall or in a scene.
  • Characterization/agency. I never promise something I can’t be certain of the outcome. Not when I’m planning to be home by a certain time, not when I’m having surgery with a tiny possibility of death. I can’t do it; I’m not in control of that. I won’t do it. I cannot relate to the protagonist and will be furious if this is shoehorned into narrative-enforced drama-conflict because we had no choice but to ‘promise’ a lie.
  • As an aromantic asexual, the introduction about ‘having a weakness for’ any type of human being (obviously phrased with romantic/sexual connotation) has me gritting my teeth. If this is not a Romance, please do not make this part of the narrative. If it is a romantic narrative, please make that very clear.
  • Agency: the security guard tied up in the… closet? Cabinet? Anyway, it is his job to respond to this situation. He has been trained and is being paid to do exactly that; I’m quite frustrated with the MC for shutting him back in there after getting his cooperation. (Let him loose at the very least, ya big idiot!) We have no reason to believe this guy will do anything other than look after his own safety, or perform his job. The other security guard downstairs is just fine, so I don’t know why this fellow gets the shaft.
  • This thing:

Very oddly-specific and incomplete. Please provide ranges. Say, [4’8 - 5’2], etc.

I’ll have more feedback for the other chapters as I go.

They’ll be explained later!

I like to kind of save stuff until it’s more plot relevant—which, with releasing the game piecemeal like this, I understand can be a little frustrating. Maybe not the right word, but you get what I mean.

But, the answers will come
