On the perceived change in attitudes, I don’t think it’s entirely fair to compare the “gaming community”, as it were, of today compared to even a decade ago. Over the past decade the market has exploded in size and accessibility, the consumers of today are not the same as those of the past. The larger the demographic, the easier it is for there to be jerks; anonimity naturally assists this. I suspect the most vocal are typically from the younger part of the cohort, below the average 33-year old gamer.
However, that alone cannot be the cause of this. My perception is that over the past decade (at least) there has been very much a reaction from certain sections of the gaming community. Now, they are passionate because they see it as an integral part of themselves, and do not know how to react to the modern gaming sphere, where not only is it easier to play games than before, but where it is no longer considered socially anathema. Gaming for a long time has been perceived as a male domain, and stereotypes of gamers have been largely disfavourable.
Initially, the reaction was against “moral guardians”. But over the past decade, to say nothing of the current political climate (which has affected this debate absolutely, and probably intensified it) I have had the perception that gamers have spent the past few years considering themselves exploited. By predatory practices by publishers, by a press they do not necessarily trust. An industry they may consider (whether true or not) to have lower standards than the past. This is an environment that will encourage some individuals to lash out; it is certainly not a healthy one for the passionate. Over the past decade the reaction has escalated to anyone who would appear to deny them what they consider theirs.
I believe that it is also worth considering that since gaming is considered by many to be a stress reliever, there may be a perception that their stress relief time is being impinged upon by others, which may result in a particularly harsh reaction. MOBA games have a reputation for having particularly toxic communities, and I don’t think that’s anomalous. If one’s time is limited and one appears to have wasted an hour, it would not be unexpected for there to be anger. To take this to a whole, there are elements that don’t want their stress reliever to change, to become something “else”, and will react angrily to it. There are gamers who consider themselves disenfranchised, and will react to what they consider to be further disenfranchisement.
because a lot of this male players have the mentality of a 2 year old
Also, I believe you are being rather unfair by tarring players as having the mentality of a 2 year old (this sort of blasé characterisation doesn’t necessarily help discussion, either). The majority of people who play games don’t even glance at discussion forums let alone express their opinion. It takes effort to do so, and it is easier to unleash an expletive-laden rant than not to; there are also those who derive enjoyment out of it to drive a response. And there’s a not-insignificant number, I should think, who would like to express their opinion but don’t.
Apologies for the long and rambling post, I’m not articulate enough to get this across.
