You are a secondary character
Oh, that made me laugh…
I mean, at least it’s honest up front, instead of pretending you’re playing a character who actually matters to the actual characters in the story and isn’t just a punching bag for them!
One day, I’d love to see some of these authors be even more honest on the description:
“You play a kickball for my characters, who either don’t care about you or want you dead. My characters rock. You suck!”
Honestly I would be ok to play as a secondary character if the game was original instead of the average urban fantasy. I dont really like urban fantasies (one of the main reason is probly my love for the vampire hunters, my empathy doesnt work when the said person is a supernatural especially a vampire. New era is being the exception IF, bcs in the New era you can clearly see the negative aspects of being a vampire and not all vampires is:arrogant, attractive, superior human that occasionaly drink bloods), also I dont like mystery elements or puzzles.
I hate it. MC should be what it means - main character. When I’m playing IFs games, I want to feel that my MC is important.
I know, right? I can get enough of being a nobody in real life. I don’t need that shit in my entertainment!
As for being the MC, I have no problem with the world not revolving around them, but they should actually be a big part of the story. Often, their obvious purpose is literally to serve as an emotional punching bag for all the NPCs and the plot itself (and, let’s be honest, the author) to tell the stories of the characters the author likes. I say no thank you to that (as often as possible), especially when the MC is forced to be a doormat and can’t stand up for themselves.
Then when you complain that your MC is constantly forced to eat a ton of shit, the author is like, “Oh, you can be mad about it! But you’re gonna have to eat a lot more and can’t be mean to my characters, hahaha!”
And some are very surprised that I don’t want to play boring doormat. ‘BUT WHY?!!?! BUT THIS GAME OF MINE HAS SUCH WONDERFUL, POWERFUL, ATTRACTIVE ROS THAT YOU LOVE! ISN’T THAT ENOUGH?!’
No.
I immediately get suspicious when I notice some author loves their ROs too much (Blogs with thousands of posts, boards, playlists, etc. about ROs ) I’m glad there are also those who have great fun writing MC and find them a fascinating character. Then I’m more sure that I will like the game.
“And eventually those ROs will stop hating and being shitty to your MC! It’ll be way before the end!” (only it’s not, and you have to wait till the end, and when you point it out, get told a chapter before the end is “way before the end” because it was a long chapter, or some other horseshit to justify the lie)
I think we may have become jaded from being lied to constantly.
Yep. I also tend to enjoy the game more when those same authors let you shape the MC a bit more within their world, and don’t decide how your MC feels about everything because they want your MC to feel a certain way.
I think we discussed this in another thread before.
