If you remember, Richard sent food and clothes to the people, that’s why he’s so popular.
I think that was because MC snitches about the training to their mother and then she went to stop him for any future favourable behaviour. Richard was punished because Charles hated our side of our family. Same reason why he called him ‘ weak ‘ . Charles desperately wanted Richard to be the next king. The fact our MC was ‘ worthy ‘ was such a punishment.
TBH, I want Richard to be King too ![]()
First story it was my goto. Prefer him as king too. Seriously dont like the mess father created.
I dont see the advantage of a sword that just sits on an alter, basically useless.
The way I play the game, in both versions, it just doesn’t make sense for my girl to become Queen. And while Richard isn’t perfect, I just think he’s the best choice. And it would make my MC and him happier.
I’m hoping the author will either: A. Give our character something unique to justify us winning no matter what, B. Add a second path later where we don’t win (like the original), C. Let us reconcile with Richard, and tell him that we DON’T want this, or D. A combination
Anyone is better than the reckless quick to anger leader that Atheris would make. Though I admittedly disagree on Richard being that much better maybe if he wasn’t so hung up on getting everyone else’s approval for all the wrong reasons. Charles really screwed over all his heirs with his nonsense.
I actually think freya would be the worse pick ngl
Well knowing her she’d abdicate anyway given her honest disinterest in being ruler. Though she’s a naive child regardless and completely gullible too.
Yeah, she’d abdicate to one of the other poor rulers meaning we get all of their problems with the added negative of not being the swords chosen heir which would absolutely obliterate richard and probably mean people wouldn’t see them as being entirely legitimate
This is one aspect I think we will see more now that we are Queen/King. Remember, Charles made sure none of his kids were to leave the castle until they were 18. I’m not saying some didn’t sneak around (I mean, Freya had to find her boytoy after all). This would mean they are fairly insulated from what is happening in the kingdom, at least until they are adult enough to leave…which is why Richard would have word of famine, but our MC wouldn’t.
I think reconciliation is the most likely route, depending on our actions/choices. But I do agree with your point A in the sense that I still would like to see more of Namherys and what power the church has, or if our MC is also the leader of the faith.
I can see Richard as trying to please everyone, and eventually getting controlled by one faction or another. Not that they would be ruthless about it, they just have to show him love, respect, the things he didn’t get from papa dearest.
At least Freya has the self-awareness that she doesn’t want to rule. As it is, though, I can see some faction gaining control of Freya easily enough. Perhaps they kidnap her boyfriend. Perhaps her sensibilities are hurt, especially if the MC indulges in evil acts.
They all have their downsides, which is emphasized in the story repeatedly:
Richard and Freya can be manipulated like there’s no tomorrow, Richard because whatever he’s told to do can be jusified as “this is for the people,” who Richard is trying to win the hearts of, and Freya because…well, she’s incompetent and reckless and naive.
Atheris can be made to make irrational decisions purely by insulting her family and calling her to anger (I know, I know, I know, people will start to defend Atheris, saying “Oh she has got to have changed!” We haven’t seen her not fly into a rage when her family or her are insulted, and we have proof she has lost her head because of that at least once.)
There’s one thing I never really figured out and it’s the origin of the heirs being hidden and essentially isolated from the kingdom from early age til 18 or whichever age was mentioned, like did Charles come up with that tradition or was it a thing from the very beginning as decreed by Namherys or something along those lines? Because it kind of messes with said heirs knowledge of what’s going on if the specific heir isn’t either a sneaky individual and breaks the rule or someone actually tells them what is happening.
If the force ghost witches aren’t the reason he’s like this, then Charlie brown is a perfect example of a character who thinks duty will just fix all of his problems, thats why he seems so inconsistent, he thinks (or at least is coping with emotions by) duty, responsibility, and roles. However that creates a blindspot in everything outside of being a king because being a father usually involves some self actualization, something that Charles doesn’t have enough of to be a good father to his children. Also have y’all noticed that each of the four heirs symbolically represents a part of Charles’s personality/psyche? Richard is his cowardice/need to please others/to be loved (when he tells his kids he’s gonna die and asks for their forgiveness), Atheris is his wrath/stubborn sense of justice (killing King Oliver and imprisoning Xavier), Freya is his insecurity/complicated relationship with his family and being a Sylvane (how he talked about Francis during the hunting scene), and MC is his resilience/willingness to be a leader despite being overlooked (also the hunting scene but especially the river scene where he’s talking to MC alone). My theory is that the older the sibling, the closer that trait is to Charles’s “core”. Do with that implication what you will!
In the game (I don’t remember where it was exactly), we are told that the reason why the heirs must be extra protected and why pirates are hated is because, if I remember correctly, during a pirate attack on the royal ship, the then king and his heir were killed, causing a succession crisis.
I think that was the story, but I’m not sure.
If I remember correctly in the original second part demo, after Atheris becomes Queen she becomes more merciful than Richard. Without MC getting involved ( Given a title by her so MC had to stay in the castle ) , she only punished the one that talked against her while Richard took the brutal option.
With the MC around, she could have been a good Queen while Richard becomes Charles 2.0 but somehow worse ( he even sent Freya to the cells if I remember correctly while Atheris had her ‘ only ‘ under house arrest )
Well that’s a role reversal then. Either way still solidifies my thought that Richard isn’t the best choice for king be it the original IF or this version.
There is an issue with the sword.
Why people should listen to it.
Two generations thus far it doesn’t really get listened to. How many prior? Normal thing?
Then shouldn’t the sword be destroyed as a useless ‘magical’ sword, that just gives ancestors memories? It really isnt beneficial from what I know of still. Cause history book gives the same as well as journals. If necessary to look back.
I’m of the opinion the sword is cursed by either Namherys or the Witches (take your pick) because it always chooses the King or Queen that starts the most bloodshed or drama at best.
If not for the visions of the past that you get when you take it, you could convince me that the sword just had some LEDs in it from a store and that some guy up in the rafters turned it on and off with a remote whenever it was time to pick a ruler. It just lights up when a specific person picks it up (on what criteria nobody knows) and makes you hallucinate for a millisecond.
Speaking of which, if the sword really does judge you worthy of leading by some criteria, how do we know that a king or queen stays worthy? People change as they grow up, so it’s not like someone who was fit to lead 70 years ago is the best choice now. Does the sword still light up if you’re worthy and you pick it up, or is this a one and done ceremonial thing? Cuz I’m pretty sure Charles wasn’t worthy after everything.
Considering how he treated allies and citizens, etc.
Im on the idea the sword is technically the villian. How was Charles worthy? Didn’t seem like it to me either.
The reason I question the sword and its mess.
I believe the story might be missing context that the sword is even worthy to listen to. How many times uprising against the chosen happens after all? Supposedly was a mention this is ‘rare’. Weird how it happened twice in a row now.
