The Sword of Rhivenia: Book One (CHECK #3830)

Ok, but my question is “how do you know?” We don’t see what happens in Lannister lands. All we know is that they’re rich as fuck, which is the lowest bar to set when your lands contain the only gold mines.

Eh he was an experienced ruler not particularly perfect but had decades of wisdom result of holding such prestigious offices for so long.

You can dislike the man all of us do but there is obvious wisdom about the fact that no one can rule alone, heeding advice is the first step of being a great King differentiating good or bad counselling just brings you to a whole new level.

I mean there is also Lannisport which is also a rich trading post, but yeah most of the money comes from the mines, he also “recently” acquired the Reynes land after they drowned in their keep so he has more income

Tywinn is by all means in a very secure position on the power scale, his vassals are afraid of him after the incident in Castamere but they still like him enough since he is a competent ruler, his daughter is married to the king while his cousins and nephews are all scaterred across the realm making alliances from major lords

Hell his family was pretty powerfull during the War of The Five Kings since he was allied to the Reach, had his grandson on the Iron Throne, and was managing to secure that position against Stannis and Robb

I don’t know a thing about GoT, but just make sure the entire thread don’t devolve into entirely discussing about GoT, alright, guys.

Do you guys wonder how Gerard(Clara’s father) a commoner ever got to be the “Advisor of Rhivenia” and such a trusted man for the King?

Like that’s the usual position a random noble would occupy, the honour of advising the King of teaching Rhivenia’s heirs it is extremely influential, the other servants said it themselves how Gerard and Clara live like nobles due to holding that position.

What could the story be behind this meteoric rise? When could he meet the MC’s father(perhaps he is a sort of childhood friend to the King)?Did he play a part during the War of the Brothers?

I hope we learn more about his backstory at some point specially if we choose to romance Clara, that on the demo you cannot rise his relationship bar(being perphaps the only side character with which you cannot improve your relationship with him) makes it all the more mysterious.

Also if we become the ruler I hope we can appoint characters to this kind of important positions, old trusted friends or people we meet during our Kingship.

Not necessarily, the advisor is supposed to be someone who is considered loyal enough to not betray you and also wise enough to actually give good advise, their rank is not as big of factor.
As for how he got the position, there was a war, hence he could’ve caught Charles attention during it and gained his trust by the end of it. Plus, we don’t know the minor details of the war, like how the kingdom was divided. Maybe Charles had most of the commoners and only a few nobles with Gerard being something of representative.

Also consider it’s easier to get a common man to be grateful and loyal to you for changing his life than a noble that might have other ambitions and a easily bought loyalty. Clara’s dad is loyal to Charles and he knew it.
Of course he wouldn’t have this problem if his siblings were alive and loyal to him but that’s not how it went lol
It’s why I’ll plan to have Atheris backing me up.

Now I understand when in ancient times they said that if you have to do damage to your enemy, make sure that they do not return the damage. Whether it’s crippling him, making him your prisoner, killing him, or preventing his allies from taking their revenge on you. I think that was the reason why our father took Oliver’s son (A clever guarantee to avoid retaliation from the traitor’s daughter)

On the other hand I can’t imagine how she would have to deal with our sister’s affair with that pirate. Viable solutions to this would be for his love to prove allegiance to our authority in some way (by defecting from the pirates and joining the royal navy or turning in his fellow pirates) also to designate our sister’s status if her boyfriend refuses to these things she would have to renounce the royal family name and her noble titles if you want to marry or run away with that individual. That but before I send some spies from the court to ensure if her intentions with our sister are genuine and not a mere interest that would not hesitate to leave such a vulnerable woman to her fate.

If this comes to an end my conflict with the pirates would become personal and my reign would be characterized by being tough on piracy and safeguarding our maritime trade routes.

Eh i always saw him as a confidant for King Charles that he trusted, Gerard is basicaly the tutor for the kids and he basicaly teaches them unsupervised

He probrably was a veteran from the Three Brothers War that managed to stand out among his peers by befriending Charles, besides he is a peasant so he has a diferent view on things than a Noble which is very helpful on topics like understanding unrest and dealing with it

Could be but traditionally at least would make sense that the King’s advisors be actual members of nobility that with time the requirements changed and the position was open to other social classes?

That would make sense, gotta understand too that Gerard is a learnt man with a level of knowledge that not many commoners possess so perphaps he could come from a slightly wealthy background.

About the War of the Brothers, probably he got employed during that period yeah but there is just no way Charles could have won that conflict without some support from the nobility, having the commoners as your only backer always ends badly, higher connections surely played a role too.

Bruh you do know that wealth is not the only way for commoners to become intelligent, well it is sometimes but not actually, the commoners don’t need only wealth to obtain knowledge, they can use street smarts for adapting and learning just like Jarean the tavern boy with a mind that is plotting against us or with us depending our relationship with him and no is not spoilers I am just guessing with the information from the demo and besides street smart, knowledge can also be stolen @eldensalkeld

True, no doubt that there were nobles amongst the advisors but Charles did had issues with nobles betraying him before. I was talking about why Gerard is a advisor tho not like general advisors being not noble as a thing.

You’re right! Any worker that was in their professional for a while could be very good at it too. A veteran for example could be a very skilled fighter but also good at teaching through training and reading the enemy.

Um… I think the “knowledge” eldensalkeld talked about it’s the knowledge you obtain from books, not “street smart”. I don’t know much about western but in my place, in medieval times only families that have money can afford for their sons to be educated, or at least know how to read and write. There are some rare cases a poor boy can be educated too, that’s mean his family really wants him to have a better future and working really hard for the fee.

If you want to be a noble working for the court (idk if this word is right, we call them “quan”) you have to take part in a national exam in the capital and I don’t think “street smart” can help you with that (maybe that skill did help the examinee on their road to the capital).

Sounds like the old king Remiel motto if you played Kingdoms and Empires.

Exactly I was referring to the knowledge you can acquire from tutors and a formal education,on the style of the education nobles like the MC and Atherys get.

On Medieval times it was not at all usual for the common people to know their letters or just understand/have access to different books about different subjects.

It is true that you can promise to build more libraries you can say so to Jarean so I guess there is a certain greater access to information and a higher chance to get an education on Rhivenia,
from here we can only speculate but libraries for the population without actual schools don’t help people much.

Guess when the actual ruling time starts we can actually get answers about stuff like this that we know about just from a comment or two.

My bet is that he is either a son of a big merchant or a bastard of a minor noble house. And if he a real nobleman, he wouldn’t let his daughter work in the stables.

“Hey, kid, wanna see a dead body?”
“No.”
“Too bad.”

Is it bad that I want an option for my MC to confine her mother to her room for the rest of her life? Not that Richard, etc. will get a free pass for acting out…

grins And forcing him into an arranged marriage seems like a very bad move later in the series. I can easily imagine the author having his new wife actually fall in love with him; he will pretend to love her back, and twisting that ally against the MC.

What’s wrong with Alvena? Isabelle is the one that is…interesting in her behavior and actions toward MC. I’m more curious than anything.

This is material not in public demo so I will blur the info. Obviously, skip over it if you don’t wish to see it. Heh, in 2 days time it won’t be as big a deal.

There is one person who caused Richard’s mom to miscarry and become infertile. Certainly advantageous to the player…but MC also doesn’t trust her own mother since she would see Alvena’s antics as trying to be the power behind the throne.

Heh, and I already have quite a few friends I promised to give them as gifts on Steam.
