Sixth Grade Detective -- BETA TESTERS NEEDED

Sixth Grade Detective: Our first work targeted for middle-grades readers. You play as a 6th grader bent on solving mysteries at your middle school!

Email me, jason AT choiceofgames for access. Please include your forumname. I would also prefer if you included your real name, but you don’t have to.

I will send you a link, a username, and a password. If you receive an access email and decide you can’t participate, LET ME KNOW, so I remove you from the testers pool; if you don’t let me know promptly, it will impact your future testing candidacy.

Return feedback TO ME. Preferably part of the same thread, rather than a new email.

I’m looking for “high level” and “low level” feedback. Not mid-level feedback.

Low-level = typos and continuity errors. A continuity error is when a character’s gender flips, or someone comes back from the dead, or you run into a plotline that just doesn’t make sense (because it’s probably a coding error).

For these low-level issues, SCREENSHOTS are VERY HELPFUL. If you see a problem, take a screenshot, or copy and paste the text that is in error, and email that. Also, the “BUG” button is great; but if you use BUG, make sure to say in your email who you are, so I can give you credit for the report.

“High level” feedback has to do with things like plot, pacing, and characters. “Scene A didn’t work for me because x, y, and z,” is useful feedback. “B character was entirely unsympathetic, because u, w, and v,” is also useful feedback.

“I had a great time and saw only a few spelling errors,” is not useful feedback. In fact, it’s the sort of thing that results in you not being given access to future betas.

I would like to be a beta tester for this story though I sometimes have problems with taking screenshots (Firefox crashing down on me like a burning Firefox)

New draft up.

jason I’m still waiting for you to send me access to this game have you not been looking at your email or something? Adamthecowdog

@adamthecowdog

Firstly, be patient. I think Jason gets to be busy.

Secondly, as stated in the rules don’t sign your posts.

Thirdly, if you continue to not get a reply to your access mails there’s likely a reason for that.

@MasterChief117John You can test without taking screenshots. Just take notes instead, copy/paste the relevant section into notepad or the email you plan to send or whatever. As long as they know what section you’re talking about whether you use screenshots, or if you just use other methods, it shouldn’t matter so much.

I screenshot all the time on my tablet, since it’s far easier to do that then to copy/paste. Whereas on my desktop, I copy-paste instead since that’s far easier than screenshots. Just do what works for you.

Question: when I use the ‘bug’ button, will what’s received on the other end indicate where in the game I am? I’ve been using it to note issues and realized that I didn’t know whether referring to something ‘on this page…’ would make any sense when read.

jason as I’ve stated befor I’m a guy that only tests the game once if it’s boring or the experience is ruined by a bug I might not try to test the game for awhile that’s why for games like dibalacal and ratings wars I did that to you and I know it wasn’t fair to leave you out of what I was thinking about the games I do send you an email when I finish a game and give you all my fedback what I liked what I didn’t like and if you look at your email you will see thows fedbacks for the game. I never used the bug report button in the beta’s because every time I used it it wouldn’t work. So I hope you can understand what type of gamer I am and decide if I showd do the tests anymore.

@StephC I think they get a scene name and line number on the bug reports so if you’re using that you shouldn’t need to say exactly where you are. I might be wrong since I’ve never actually seen the bug reports emails myself, nor have I any real experience of using the function myself.

@AdamTheCowDog I can barely read what you’ve written. Please can you try to capitalise and punctuate your posts. Checking the spelling would be useful too. If that’s the sort of writing you’re providing in your beta-test feedback then I can see why you’re not on the list anymore.

The whole point of beta-testing is to actually find bugs. If you want to play a bug-free game, then buy the finished version. You have an imperfect version of the game, but you provide feedback in order to make it better. If you’ve repeatedly not provided quality feedback on games you’ve signed up to beta-test then you’ve likely impacted your future testing candidacy.

If you find an aspect of a game boring, you have two choices. The first is send an email, letting them know that the game just isn’t to your tastes, and explain the reasons why. Not just “this is boring” but something like “the choices are too passive and I never felt like I could impact the plot, it was frustrating that I’d to click next five times before I got a choice, and that choice was just what I felt like having for lunch which had absolutely nothing to do with the mystery of who shot the sheriff.” Or even “this genre isn’t really something I enjoy, and while I can see the game is well written, I’m never going to be interested in playing a housespouse juggling the demands of keeping a house clean with raising some children”

If you’ve managed to work your way onto the “no testing” list (and I’ve no idea if that’s the case) I can suggest that you work on proving yourself. Provide quality feedback on the various WIP threads on the forum and show yourself to be a valuable member of the community, who’s able to provide useful, articulate feedback on the games he tests. Your capitalisation, punctuation, and spelling are all important, since they’re how you present yourself, spending a little extra time on those can help too. And who knows, you might show that you’re able to test the official games.

Error on my game , when Vitessa dances , it describes Finnegan dancing :imp:

Yes, we’ve already fixed the bug, but it hasn’t been pushed out to all platforms yet. We waiting for any other bug reports.
