Quill & Sword (WIP) - Sneak Peek pre-alpha (updated 7/7/15)

XD It’s okay. To give you a rough idea of what a 110% agility would be- Bruce Lee and his teacher Ip Man would be approximately 100 on Agility/Skill. 110% agility would be like Spiderman: ‘My spidey-sense is tingling and I don’t know why!’

Now i’m imagining a character with 110 on intelligence, magic, and tactics, and skill.

When he fights he’ll just stand there and everytime you start swinging at him he’ll calculate the speed and force behind the swing when and how much magic he will have to put into a small shield and what magic based attacks he’ll have to make to win in the span of .5 seconds.

Then when a girl he likes start talking to him he’ll freeze there for 2 hours because he can’t talk to women or anyone for that matter because his social skill is capped at 15.

@Faewkless Ahhh, another anime fan, I see. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I don’t think that you’ll be able to get other skills to 100 in the course of a game… Depends in part how fairmath actually works and if it actually does what it should. Like if something gives Magic %+4 and you have 90 Magic, will that become +1%? But yeah, your imagination in this instance is wonderful. I’d like to be able to give that kind of experience in the game (I, at least, would roll out gales of laughter at it).

I remember fairmath saying the higher the stat the harder it is to increase so %+20 when your stat is fifty adds twenty but at 60 and such it does increase less so I think your guesstimate is sonewhat accurate.

Actually, fairmath amounts to an increase of one-half at 50. If you have a 0 in a stat, the stat would increase (in your example) the full 20%. But at 50, it increases by exactly 1/2. At 25 it should be 3/4, at 75, 1/4. And going in the other direction, -20% would be a full -20 at 100, but -5 at 25.

My uncertainty is on smaller numbers. Like +2% for example- is there a point where that becomes +0? Or will it always add at least 1%? That’s what I’m unsure of.

Btw tell me if i’m wrong but this is my interpretation of stats that pass 100.
Strength(can beat the hulk in an arm wrestling match)
Agility(can do a backflip while doing a frontflip)
Skill(You don’t have just the sixth sense, you have 10 other to accompany it)
Magic(You have more magic in your body than water on this planet)
Endurance(Can tank nuclear explosions while inside of a dying star)
Intelligence(You found the last digit of pi)
Social(You could talk a boulder into becoming diamonds)
Tactics(You win chess in one move with just a king)

(Idk about the small numbers in fairmath it says that you should use numbers based on how much you want the stat to increase based on the choice)

Is it jsut me or is it impossible to make your character have 100 in a stat? I made a character from the kingdom where they are all warriors made him practice strength gave him the heaviest armor and weapons and gave him the most hulkish body type but his strength is only at 55.

I also tried making a character with 100 intelligence but that didn’t work either.

Anyways this seems interesting. Will there actually be any politics in the game or will ti be of the sorte where the king says i want this go fight for it?

it feels like a fantasy version of “Mobile Fighter G Gundam”

 Entertaining thoughts. Love some of them- made me laugh.

I guess I’d describe it kinda like
Str - Hulk smash!
Agility - My spidey-senses are tingling!
Skill - Neo has learned kung-fu.
Endurance - Wolverine
Intelligence - Emperor Palpatine
Social - The main character from the movie ‘Thank you for Smoking’ would be high nineties. Hard to think of examples here, actually.
Tactics - The creepy opponent in the Tony Jaa movie ‘Warrior’ with the twitch, or Sherlock Holmes in that movie doing the pit fight or mentally battling Moriarty.

Well- you can be sure that I’ll work on it to where I get it set up the way I want it to work, even if it’s a process and doesn’t happen all at once.

Also, on observation, I think you have agility and skill switched around for what they are in-game. Agility is like dodging and speed of reflex. Skill is like ability to fight and use weapons.

There will absolutely be politics! It’s a major plot point, so I don’t want to give too much away just yet- just know that it’ll become clear soon enough. Although… it kindof is a ‘your king says this, go do eeet’.

I want it to have a manga/anime feel to it, mixed with gritty fantasy. I’ll do my best at making it feel that way.

To make a character with a 100 in a stat… there will always be one choice you can select on what comes natural to you that’s a little different from normal- that will give you 100; but only one choice will be different, and if you don’t select it, you have a non-savant (which is perfectly fine!)

I can’t seem to savant magic. (I want all the magics) but I at most get to 60.

Just read the game so far, and I like the diplomacy concept. The first page is a pretty long, straight-up infodump; it would be worth seeing if you can find a way to get that info across in story form, through some sort of encounter where you’re revealed to be a diplomat. In general, I’ll second all of Pangolin’s feedback.

I assume “the Cis” is what you’re asking about replacing with Yomi? While it was a funny inversion of expectations to read it – like a world where straight people are referred to as “The Gay” – I agree it needs replacing with something. Not sure I’d go with the Japanese spirit reference though. I’d suggest making up a term unique to your world rather than one laden with baggage from ours.

Anyway: it’s your call if you want to write a world where a group is hated and despised, and has to deal with that fact. (The language of “despised” in the game is stronger than what I’d expected from reading your comments here, by the way). I would say that if (as you suggest) your main goal is for “controversy to be left out of the game” and for it “simply to be fun and enjoyable, not to say anything grand and thought-provoking,” it would be easier to not write major gender discrimination into your world. That will kill the fun for a significant number of CoG readers.

You commented at one point, “It seems like folly to ignore superstitions and misunderstanding from binary masses” – but not every culture in our world has had those superstitions, and it’s your creative choice as to whether your world has it, much as it’s your choice on slavery. (Or same-sex and bi romance interests – where you appear to be making a choice to not have those be a basis for discrimination?)

“Both a man and woman are sent as Diplomats from each country, and fight the opposite gender, so that if one loses in combat and the other wins, the country has a chance to replace their fallen Diplomat.”

It does feel a bit implausible to me that a ritual this important and this thoroughly gendered would be open to non-binary people in a world where they’re as despised as your current draft. I’d have expected the Cis/Yomi/whatever to be excluded as Diplomats, even if they’re accorded a certain superstitious respect in other areas of life.

As you say, it’s basically at a draft; this early on it’s easy to make changes, and a good part of why I posted the game in such an early stage- to garner valuable feedback like this.

I’ll be completely honest- I don’t know what the non-binary community would be happy with. Inclusivity- I can understand that much. Positive inclusivity- I can understand that as well. But in game, what does this -mean-, when non-binary wants to be recognized as non-binary, recognized for that fact? Recognition is going to create positive and negative judgement… for a community that seems to be trying to avoid just that.

Please realize that in-game, your instructor is harsh on you to make you good at what you are. Like being called a maggot in the military. The tone for ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ would be no less insulting used properly, I assure you.

But, I still want to make everyone happy. Let’s face it- I like darker fantasy, but if I’m happy and my fans aren’t, I’m not doing it right. I’ll work with it until I get a term and flavor that people find suitable.

Ummm…
This is just me but I don’t want any character to have just a positive portrayal.
To me what makes or breakes a character’s portrayal is
A. Are they realistic (no people that are all good or all bad b/w morality and such)
B. Whether the character is bad because race or gender or whatever/the author says they are bad/ they are bad because of the things they do and their personality.
So yeah.

So I think this game could be fine if you show no bias towards any race gender or character type.
(I really just prefer gray storytelling)

I can’t speak on behalf of nonbinary folk, and I hope some will join the discussion. But from earlier threads, I’d guess that what quite a few would like is for nonbinary to be recognized as an option – as you’ve done – and for that option to come with no different “positive and negative judgement” than the other options on the menu. If the choice between male and female changes only skills, pronouns and bits of text, and doesn’t heap a massive pile of negative judgement on the MC… well, is there any real reason the choice to be nonbinary shouldn’t be similar in its (non) consequence?

Lots of CoG readers enjoy taking breaks in fantasy worlds where the particular brand of discrimination they face in daily life simply doesn’t exist – where they can play characters like themselves and it’s not a huge deal. That doesn’t mean the fantasy can’t be dark, or that the MC can’t come from a discriminated-against group. But you’ll probably keep more fans onside (and need to worry less about accuracy of representation) if the basis for discrimination isn’t identical to ones they face in real life.

If you had a strong vision to write a story about gender discrimination, then you might well choose to forge ahead with it anyway. But my sense has been that that isn’t really a core theme – see again your quotes about just wanting to make it a fun and enjoyable game.

What I think might be happening is that having a “Yomi” diplomat can be a luxury. So instead of “we need a woman to replace this one since he’s a male” the country can choose from either gender to replace them, so they can simply choose the best of them without restriction.

I do see how these rules might not make sense with a non-binary person thrown into the mix, though.

I completely believe in that approach. Yes, you’ll have portrayal based on what you do and say. And moral greyness. That will be in all of my games, I simply believe in it that strongly.

That said, there are always stereotypes. If you are a big hulking brute, people are going to initially think of you as a hulking scary brute, even if you’re a gentle giant. That’s another aspect of realism.

There won’t be any bias towards race in the game. No bias towards gender (other than that males grow strength a little faster, females grow magic a little faster, and non-binaries grow intelligence a little faster), and it affects available ROs. Character type - there won’t be a character type that is superior to the others, but it -will- affect the game. Both with stats, the way you look, and the fame/respect/fear stats.

I think only use a Japanese word if you’ve got a Japanese inspired setting and you’re using a number of other loan-words.

If you’re just using English, can’t you just call them Reborn then? Or an old soul, or something along those lines? I’d even say go as far as calling them cursed or an anathema or something. If it fits with the setting and it’s seen that way. There’s actually nothing wrong with having discrimination, even that kind. Just treat it thoughtfully as an author, even if the world is bigoted.

As for the non-binary community, I’ve no idea if there’s a single voice of them. Everyone’s individuals with different experiences. I’ve disliked characters other people have loved, and they’ve loved characters I just find so uncomfortable. As long as you try it should be ok. I’d say forget about non-binary and non-binary community and all of those ideas, and just make your character and world as fits.

That’s the angle I’m trying for. Someone that doesn’t identify as male or female isn’t bound to the rule of replacing a male or a female, they can replace either. Obviously, only the best get to be Diplomats, but a non-binary can pragmatically replace either.

The ‘one man one woman’ tradition is there in the game. Both for gender equality and equality in ROs, and because it helps give the anime feel ‘Why is this spaceship filled with female characters with one guy???’ - well, there’s this reason why there are a bunch of ROs around, for both genders. And because it shows a checks-and-balances aspect. “Both our men and women are powerful” rather than “Our men/women are more powerful than your men/women”. A woman must prevail against a man, and a man must prevail against a woman, for a kingdom to win a ‘war’ in this fashion.

Thanks. I’m going to look up terms for ‘ancestor’ in other languages, and see if anything sparks a thought, whether I keep a word or make a new one based on something.

‘Sorei’ looks to be a possibility.
So does ‘Zhong’.
And ‘Maior’
Which of these sounds most pleasing to you?

Unless you’re using a lot of other fantasy made up terms I’d suggest just sticking with English. Call them Ancestor or hit up an English thesaurus. If you are using a number of made up fantasy words then go with whatever language you’re using as inspiration there.
