Alright, just finished it.

Holy shit.

Also, found two typos:

There’s a 1 there in the fourth option.

And here it should be her not his.

I HAVE THOUGHTSSS:

  • While I wasn’t certain either way on if K had Ment abilities or not (which, y’all are amazing guessing that all the way back in August), I’m very happy with this particular plot twist. We’ll have to see how it plays out, but I think it already adds quite a bit more depth to K’s character. I know a large theme of this story so far is finding strength in what makes you different to others, and I feel like K trying to show everyone that they are useful even without Ment abilities is another example of that. Could probably even be a healthy example for Button’s who are resentful of their Pollard Zero? Plus, as much as I love K, them ā€œreadingā€ our minds and being blatantly unapologetic about it came off as a huge asshole move. So I’m glad there was more clarity on that front.
  • Plus, I’ve been missing K, and I’m so really excited to see them play a more active role within the story. This does beg the question though: if this is what K was trying to tell us about last chapter, what exactly were they going to reveal? Just their Pollard score? How much did they intend to (and were allowed to) reveal before Rosy and the dean met with Button?
  • My heart grows ten sizes with every Nick interaction. I love his well-intentioned protectiveness, and how loving he is when Button shuts down/panics during the meeting. Also, that moment where it’s revealed he did mess up quite a bit at the start of his job, and that there’s parts of us that he envies? Love it. I love the idea that your Button can almost idolize him so much that they forget that he too is a person with flaws and insecurities.
  • My Button isn’t romancing Rosy, but I really liked him in this chapter. He’s a hardass (which definitely contrasts with Nick who leans more towards coddling Button), but still has good intentions and a healthy amount of respect for Button. Especially Buttons who have that respect for and confidence in themselves.
  • Screw Clarence. I hope one of the endings involves him getting kicked out of the school purely for being an ass lol

I’ll have to replay at a later time, but I loved this update. I felt like it humanized a lot of the characters in a way.

Ironically, I now feel less inclined to romance K. I do agree Rosy’s scenes were great though.

Oh, and I once again managed to piss off Nick.
Here’s that part if you guys wanna see it.

Loved everything about it.

Can’t wait for next chapter!

Thank you so much! You very much hit the nail on the head with the theme of finding strengths in setbacks and K being a prime example of that. Kent may be named after Superman, but K is very much meant to be a Batman-type. No powers, just hard work.

I personally find K’s behavior to be inexcusable if they were a Ment (as is Noh’s, but at least you know what you’re getting from that corner). I’ve been pretty surprised that people were gung-ho to romance K without realizing that there were extenuating circumstances  (Also, I would 100% recommend going back to play K’s route with this new info, since you can realize what an absolute awkward–albeit stoic–softie they truly are.)

I can totally see why people could feel differently about K after that reveal. Especially if some their appeal in K was wrapped up in how unapologetic he was at first glance. I think I just really like the potential for parallels now between K and Button. They’re both not only not Ments, but they both are also subverting people’s expectations of them based on the powerful families they come from. Glitch kind of hinted at it when we first met him, but there’s a lot of obvious parallels now between their stories, and I think it could create some really interesting conversations.

@wildelight Ooohh, I definitely will now. I love the idea of Kent being just as confused as we were about what was happening. :stuck_out_tongue: Also, this definitely does put the whole ā€œlocking K’s route behind saving the shih tzusā€ choice into perspective. We haven’t gotten to know him too well, but K is pretty reserved. Not too trusting of others. Him not being able to read Button’s mind means he’s not always able to pick up on people’s intentions. Button, however, showing up at his doorstep to show unprompted compassion for his pets does show a lot about Button’s character. I think you said somewhere on your Tumblr that K shows his affection through actions more than words – so I’m sure he looks for that in others too.

Been pretty vocal about this in the past, so I won’t retread old ground too much, but suffice it to say that I’m pretty much with the author on this one. My K-romance playthrough was 100% contingent on the ā€œnot really a Ment (or at least somehow not reading the MC’s mind)ā€ theory. Was honestly ready to abandon the playthrough if it turned out to not be the case. So, definitely relieved at the confirmation.

So, one thing I notice regarding the ā€œMC’s secretā€ choice is that the Sally crush option (and any other Sally-related narration) is contingent on having kissed Sally, rather than whether or not they actually have a crush as determined by the sallycrush variable. Is this how this relationship is going to be tracked in the future, i.e. the game won’t acknowledge a crush unless you formally started the romance by kissing her? (I’m really hoping not, for what it’s worth.) Either way, this seems sort of odd, given that it makes more sense to treat this as a closely-guarded secret if they didn’t actually kiss, no?

Apologies if this comes off as pushy, but can there can an option in the shih tzu route to have an option where Button cares about the dogs and finds K attractive? Such as:

Sally’s main romance route is, in current plans (which are always subject to change, as I’m learning is a necessity in IF), contingent on kissing her on the forehead or lips in Chapter 4. The crush will be acknowledged in other places–especially if you choose to romance other characters or you decide to sacrifice on the alter of fraternal devotion and set her and Nick up (which won’t work unless you’re truly in favor of their relationship, because Nick = mind reader). Currently, you’re presented with the active choice of moving on from a Sally crush if romancing Glitch.

More mechanics-relevant: I need to go back and alter certain crush variables when Glitch’s romance starts. I have a lazy workaround at the beginning of Chapter 7 added, because I didn’t want to break everyone’s saves, but all romance/crush/attraction stats are getting complete reworking come Chapter 10 when all saves will be wiped.

I don’t know if that’s really a satisfactory answer? I’m trying to more conscientious and not retroactively code things in prior chapters because people were (understandably!) upset about stats breaking with each update, but it leads to some sloppy workarounds (and some less nuanced flavor text) until I can wipe all the save files and implement my fixes.

I’ll think about it! I already plan on adding more options for K’s route for asexual/demi/otherwise slower-build romance paths with K that don’t hinge on initial physical attraction, so I don’t want to overload the screen with combo choices. If you choose the puppies need you, it’s more about what Button’s #1 focus is at the time is on the dogs, and whether or not they find K attractive isn’t irrelevant (you can choose that option and still express attraction to K in later choices!)

Even if Button finds K attractive, ā€œthe puppies need me!ā€ mindset is (imo) implied by their very decision to knock on the door.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by ā€œmainā€? I’m aware that Sally’s romance takes a while to start if you don’t get the ball rolling early on, but is this a situation where it actually doesn’t come to fruition at all until the game is almost over? Just how much content does this lock you out of?

I don’t want to seem querulous here, but between the longstanding nature of the MC’s crush (should you choose to establish it) and the newfound presence of Nick in their head (especially if your relationship with him isn’t great, as with my relevant MC), initiating the romance at that particular moment felt way too soon and very much out of alignment with where my MC would have been mentally and emotionally. I don’t mind waiting a bit, but if not kissing her then and there means the romance functionally doesn’t happen, I’m worried it won’t feel worthwhile in the end? Particularly if the crush is only sparsely acknowledged outside of scenarios where you give up on Sally (which isn’t at all what my plan was—it just didn’t feel like the right time when the opportunity presented itself).

You don’t come across as querulous at all! Sorry for misunderstanding.

The problem is that I’m trying not to really commit to specifics, because I’m finding that things keep changing from what I had originally planned. And then people get upset because I inadvertently lied, and I feel bad for not fulfilling the expectations that I was the one to set, and no one’s really happy.

Ever since K was changed to a hidden route, I’m really trying not to overpromise.

If you don’t initiate Sally’s romance in Chapter 4, her romance likely won’t have another jump point until all other romances have initiated and Nick is out of your head–which isn’t happening right away. (Apologies to @Baam because I know how much they love all this quality Nick time )

If you hold off on the kiss, you won’t get much ā€œromance relationship fluffā€ with Sally, but you will get a potentially more satisfying/dramatic/rain-lashing-against-your-face-in-a-thunder-storm confession moment since you’ve waited a long time for what your Button feels is the ā€œright moment.ā€ I can’t say whether or not the wait will feel worthwhile, though. I’ll try to make it so!

As for Sally not being acknowledged, as I said in my above post, there will be more flavor text about the various crushes and ROs added once the romance stats get reworked and saves get flushed

Thanks for clarifying. Like I said, I definitely don’t mind waiting a while—I think I’d probably opt to wait until Nick was out of my MC’s head anyway, so that sounds about right to me. My main concern was that this would be one of those situations where if you missed your shot, the ā€œromanceā€ you would get would be more of an afterthought in the epilogue to tie up the loose end, which I would be pretty bummed about. But it doesn’t sound like that’s the case?

And of course:

This…does sound awfully promising. Consider my interest renewed!

Of course! Don’t you just love it when someone you loathe is talking 24/7 inside your head?

Hell yes (I was very pleasantly surprised by the option to initiate a later crush on Rosy based on how they treat you in Chapter 6, extremely :eyes: for an ace K route).

How do we do this?? I’ve been playing chapter 4 over and over again and I’m honestly at a loss.
