May 2024's Writer Support Thread

Mhm. May, quite a funky month and where I live. The start of a painfully hot summer. Here’s to hoping it doesn’t affect me.

As for my writing. I have long given up on giving deadlines since it’s clear my goals tend to be much longer than I expect. And constantly failing to meet them is not very nice.

But my general goals for this month(s) is a simple:

Finish the goal from the past months and get another update out for more feedback.

Hope everyone has an amazing month. And may the 4th be with you :3

My goal for May is to get another chapter of Saturnine released, something I may actually be able to accomplish by tomorrow. I just got a huge boost of spite and contempt which is driving me forwards pretty damn fast. If I take more than one day to finish the chapter, it’s because I wanted to make the “May the 4th” pun too.

All still well, In Mara’s day. I only write 200 words but I am painting well the concept in my mind.

It is a story that starts from the ending and then we start to retold the tale of how we ended in that concrete point of the story from there several endings and prologues happen based on what we did and what we choose to preserve and keep running through centuries.

In today’s other news: I’m making a font, and currently can’t decide whether it looks good or horrible (Artie Simek I’m not), but I guess I’ll have to see it actually in use to decide that. I picked a new flower from the flower shop to replace one that died, so I’m kinda happy. I also found my favourite bread (it’s available only sometimes), which is great.

And I just realized there are clothing stores that actually fix the clothes to fit you when you buy them. Mind. Blown.

I’m sorry, I’m now picturing you’re mirror writing

The other day, I was ruminating on the way back from the supermarked, and my brain treated me to a really intense and emotional piece of dialogue (semi-monologue), that I thought would be amazing to include in a game, at some point.
I was going to write it down when I’d put away the groceries, but was distracted, and I realised just now that I never wrote anything down about it, and I no longer remember what it was about.

RIP to all the ideas lost to momentary distraction.

An advice to that is just don’t try to force yourself into remember. With relax and simply vibe while writing sure part of it will return to you.

Even if it doesn’t, I at least have the take-away, that I want to put some deeply vulnerable moments in my stories, where ROs/side-characters talk with the MC about their own inner life, in ways that isn’t about the MC or their relationship with each other.

It might sound a bit obvious, but it was kinda an epiphany for me, that I can just do that, and the readers will probably like it, and not find it cringe or annoying.

Here's a WIP image of the font, if someone's interested.

So, my calendar says that 3rd of May is Wordsmith Day. Sounds like a perfect excuse to try to finish my interactive epic poem for the diversity jam.

That font is not easy to read on phones. Maybe have several options available based on the platform

It’s meant for comics and somesuch, so it’s probably going to be used only in images, but I’ll definitely need to check the readability at smaller size after I’ve figured out all the letters in the first place. (That image is not a very good quality.)

Hi, long time listener, first time caller.

I’m supposed to be working on other projects but I’d like to try to make a short game this month in CScript. I’ve been eyeing it for a while, its logic eluding me still. But I’ll crack its secrets! :joy:

I don’t know about any others, but this gave me flashbacks to Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines’s “Deb at Night” radio show.

Welcome and I’m glad you called in tonight, first time caller!

Don’t be afraid or ashamed of trying stuff. And remember you don’t need too complex codes to create a story. Also people here will helping you.

I will certainly being cheering you to have your first attempt.

This first week of May, I continued light editing on Patchwerk’s pre-beta copy and also started researching for my next route.

I actually consider May 1st - May 10th as the first week, so I’ll be posting on May 10th my first weekly update.

I hope everyone got off to a good start this month.

The semester is finally over and I got a three day weekend! So I finally got time to put words on paper. I think this is going to be the first month since Dec of last year, I’ll have time to actually sit down and write. My goal is to at the very least jot down 5000 words. Anyway, good luck everyone!

Kyle interview in world of darkness is out. I recommend checking it out. Very interesting, I don’t share many of his opinions but his insights are very important to know for anyone interested in writing and or world of darkness

Hello May support thread!

I had a goal in April to finish my sixth chapter of Villain Juice. That didn’t happen, but I did do the real life things of starting applications and helping my wife with her new job.

Part of the problem with writing was just, stuff got complex in a coding sense and I wound up spending a lot more time on that than expected. I think the outcome is a cool fight but we’ll see what the audience thinks. Chapter itself is also getting chonky, to the extent I may end up splitting it a second time.

I am starting to feel a little frustration. Not in a burnout sense, but getting irritated with my own distractibility and the nagging feeling I should be doing more each day. The project is some distance from completion and knowing the goal is so far away is difficult.

I was planning on doing more writing tonight with Dragon of Steelthorne 2, but the release of Dragon of Steelthorne is starting to give me some pause.

I’m not sure how the overall reception will be like, but I just checked Steam and the first two reviews are negative, which is concerning. Granted, the steam crowd is harder to please… but still. Right now, I’m considering putting a hold on writing until I consolidate all the feedback (positive or negative) from the release of the first game.

My advice is try to be positive and seek guidance on other authors here. No idea if published authors have a support private group but I am sure your peers will give you pointers.

Remember you achieve what for many is a dream. Nobody will keep that from you

A new release can be nerve wracking. I didn’t look at my Steam reviews for quite some time, purely for my mental health. I did pay attention to the forum thread when I had the courage to do so, and was pleasantly surprised with the helpful feedback and kind comments I received. I see you’ve had some of that as well and I’m really glad to see the support on the announcement thread for DoS.

Being able to take feedback and apply it to the next game is a great approach, and sometimes taking a break is a good thing so you can come back to it with new energy and a fresh perspective. Of course, you’ll never please everyone and it’s important to stay true to your vision. I wish you luck finding that balance. It isn’t easy to achieve.

If it helps any, nearly every author I know has release-day/week/month anxiety, so you’re not alone. I hope you’re also finding time to celebrate this huge accomplishment! :revolving_hearts:
