Limited choices

Spoilers, man! >:(

You’re right; this’ll derail the thread. Hard.
Let’s start a new thread!

To put the statement I made into a bit more focus. I did say I find a version of our world where everyone is bisexual to not be realistic. However if the story was set in another world that isn’t based on my own then everyone being bisexual wouldn’t feel as unreal to me. Everyone being bisexual is unreal to me because monsters are unreal I can write what I want and not have someone turn around and tell me how wrong I am, or how it offended them. However sexuality is very real and as a straight male the concepts of being gay or bi are different to me. I have no problem with that but I do feel uncomfortable trying to put myself in that frame of mind. In Unnatural I have wrote both straight and gay romance options and if I am honest I was terrified that my attempt at it would offend someone. That I would write something that would upset someone. Thankfully no-one has yet said to me that the romances has offended them which I am grateful for (however ironically I have had someone comment that my zombies were wrong which I think is funny).

Hopefully this makes as much sense here as it does in my head. I apologise in advance if this ends up offending someone as that is most certainly not my intention.

Still my favorite comment ever.

And for reference, putting spoiler and /spoiler in square brackets will ghost out words like Packet just did. (:

I think you should open a new thread on that.

And concerning your other post here, will you make the modded games available for somewhere, for example by dropbox?

WulfyK, unless I’m wrong, the “mods” that have been mentioned so far aren’t ones that expand the gameworld, Elder Scrolls or fanfic style. They’re tweaks to stats or genderflipping or similar minor stuff.

I’m content with individuals who eventually buy Choice of Rebels modding it like that for their personal enjoyment (as I know @P_Tigras has expressed an intent to do) but I don’t think it would be appropriate for those kinds of mod versions to be made available on a public forum. Shared privately, sure, fine (and even if I weren’t fine with it, I couldn’t stop you). (: But putting up amended txt files would make it easy for people to play a slightly altered version of the game for free.

I don’t imagine that was what you had in mind when you asked Jason if they’d be made available on Dropbox – but I think that’s what it would amount to.

I probably generalized it too much.
I meant to say that it doesn’t matter to ME. And I prefer a more locked character. It feels more ‘intimate’.
The games on this site are pretty much RPGs, and when I roleplay I try to not go for female chars, because I can be that person all day long (though it is cozy in my comfort zone). It’s much more interesting to be some macho orc smashing those queer tree huggers. Or be a queer orc trying to survive in your tribe. But if nothing of interest is available, I’ll just go for that average female or whatever it is the author wants me to be.

I still don’t get all the fuss about this gender thing and sexual orientation. For all I care we could just play as colourless, amorphous blob thingies as long as we save the frigging galaxy from zombie space mutant ninja pirates (or similar). Whatever. It just has to be interesting.

Gender stuff and all it entails are pretty much just cosmetics to me - but I guess that’s what the icing on a cake is all about.

I would never say no to some delicious cake, but since Portal I might just be more of a cookie person~

Well, in the Guns of Infinity thread, @Sylfaen mentioned that s/he has changed the code of SoI to enable certain outcomes that are impossible with the original version.

And what exactly has @P_Tigras wanted to change, since both gender and orientation are selectable in Rebels?

And if you or anyone else want to write more on this topic, we should open a new thread for this too.

The fact that you have to have a weakness (especially if I decide not to include the option to buy exemption for $0.99). And – more on topic for the thread – the way the game chooses the gender of the henchperson who joins at the end of Ch 2. In his case, he’d like to get (and romance) Suzane, but he gets Simon.

And it’s fine for it to be icing to you. For others, it’s a significant part of the cake. (:

Hehe, I’m just more concerned about the taste before anything else!

Publicly sharing any kind of mods is definitely a fine line, and probably one we shouldn’t cross. It would allow people potential access to games that cost money, or to options that would reduce potential income. Like in Heroes Rise there are some IAP purchases for various things that, while attainable in-game, are fairly hard to reach without lots of meta-gaming. If people were to mod it to the point you didn’t have to pay money for that option, that’s kind of a kidney shot to the dev, no?

Modifying the game files short of some stat boosts or changing bugs/genders yourself is probably too ambitious when you lack the ability to share it with anyone, so I doubt we’ll ever see any kind of expanded gameworld. If we do continue this conversation it should probably be in its own thread, since we are kinda going off-topic.

PS: I just want to say messing with Choice of Rebels has proven to be hilariously buggy. Since your scripts are set to check =, instead of >= I can’t just boost my stats all to three or something. Nor can I universally change the = to >= because then I’d end up with cases where your script would normally check for =1 or =0 and say something depending on your stat, and I don’t want the game to say both since it makes no sense.

@WulfyK
Indeed I did, but nothing that major. I usually just do it to test things out, or maybe fix a bug that I encountered that I don’t want to wait on a fix for. I’ve changed character genders a few times but that isn’t all that major either. Just a pain to go through all the lines of code to find references to them and fix it.

If modding is that easy, why are there IAPs at all?

And which character genders in which games have you changed?

Not sure if FG was referring to me, Nocturnal, or both of us related to my point of “I find my first game unrealistic in that the main character and every NPC is omnisexual.”

I chose to make all romantic interests open to both genders due to coding ease. I don’t think their back stories were originally that well-crafted because of this. That’s where lack of realism comes into that aspect of the characters. In ZE, I ask people to suspend disbelief about zombies (and ghosts), but I wanted to make realistic characters and felt I couldn’t do justice to specific backgrounds and history.

To support the developer, offer easier casual play, etc. Lots of reasons.

Let’s see… Mindy in Zombie Exodus, Elson from Swords of Infinity, Semryu from Way Walkers, and a few others that aren’t very important.

@JimD
I think you did quite admirably, I found Mindy and Heather’s omnisexuality to be believable. The other dude (I can’t remember his name at all for some reason) was also okay but I agree with an earlier statement if he was checking you out or something as a male it would have been more believable.

Tom was just out of left-field, though.

He was referring to me as I mentioned it not being realistic when my entire game is about monsters. Which I admit is ironic lol

I think in a way the whole all bisexual kinda works as in an apocalypse end of the world situation potential for romance is slimmer and people might start taking what they can get when craving companionship

I want to unpack this a bit, unfortunately my brain’s gone fuzzy again. I think it’s a few statements you’ve made equating bisexuality with personality, as well as needing a reason for it. I’m likely going to phrase this wrong since I’m trying to write through some really thick brain-fog now. I’m not offended by anything you’ve said, and likewise don’t want to offend you.

As a straight man, who I presume has no interest in men at all, do you think that come the apocalypse that would do anything to change your sexuality? (Presuming the apocalypse wasn’t of the variety that actually unleashes something that does change everyone’s sexuality.)

Which isn’t to say that, well sometimes there are circumstances that people can’t account for. Sometimes gay people fall in love with those of the opposite gender, and straight people fall for the same. Then there’s been societies which have supported same-sex relations in such ways as to make them more common. And there’s the whole idea of prison-gay, I’ve issues with that term.

And of course the apocalypse is fraught with danger, people thrown into strange situations wherein they’re saving each other’s lives, and resources, and other people are scarce so who knows what circumstances might come up. But, I’m not sure I like that idea. I just prefer the everybody is bi narrative, as opposed to the straight/gay but times are tough so shall make an exception. Not that it doesn’t happen, just not as frequently as in fan-fiction.

I’d another point to make about queer people all hanging out together. I have a disproportionate amount of queer friends. So I don’t really consider it all that unrealistic for there to be a group where everyone is bi.

But I’m sure I’ve said this all before and I’m not finding the words to phrase it right.

Anyway I’m glad that no one scared you away from writing all sorts of relations.

I would like to think that in an apocalypse Situation I would be able to keep my wife and family alive. But if I was single it probably wouldn’t wouldn’t change my preferences but You do make good points. While I may consider everyone is bi to be unrealistic I also think everyone is straight to be just as unrealistic which is why I aimed for a mix of straight/bi/gay NPCs.

But in case of ZE, it’s not that every NPC is stated to be bisexual, just all the ROs. I think it’s certainly not unbelievable that all of them are bisexuals.

Definately prefer bisexual ROs, never want to see a repeat of the FemShep x Miranda incident.
