Life and Death in Tropeland (potential collaboration?)

Do you think the person who wrote this definition is trans, cis boy?

Because they’re not, and I’ll tell you why: “_gendered” as a definition has always been a slur in trans communities.

That definition was written by a cishet. Like you.

And I’d like to not be stabbed for who I am, but we can’t all have what we want, can we?

I kind of feel that one reason for having diverse stories and perspectives is so that as well as less-represented people being able to see themselves and people like them in stories, their perspectives can be shared with people who don’t usually get to see them. Fiction can be a powerful tool for fostering understanding and empathy with those different from you.

With that in mind, demanding your own representation because you feel that you can’t relate with people not exactly like you seems to be missing the point.

Personal attacks are not allowed. I may reopen this after I’ve reviewed the thread, but for the moment this conversation is on hold until everyone can be civil.

This is now open again.

Reminder: If you see a post that you believe breaks the forum rules, that is harassing you or someone else, or that otherwise should not be on the forum, flag it and do not respond. If you feel you need to elaborate on why such a post breaks the rules, or is otherwise offensive, select ‘something else’, describe the problem, and it will open up a thread for you to discuss it with the moderators.

Each flagged post is read by a moderator who decides on a reaction. However, if enough people flag a post before that, the post will also be temporarily removed automatically. As a final option, you can also call the moderators by typing @moderators in the same way you type a name.

Do not respond to posts which break the rules, or which are offensive or rude. Simply flag it, and leave it to the mods.

Do not continue any of the conversation from above that made me close this in the first place. If you want to talk about related topics, first don’t call someone out (some people are currently not allowed to reply and piling on does not help), and second take it off this thread and onto a more appropriate one (if you need to create one, click the ‘share a link button’ and reply as a new topic).

Absolutely! If you’ve free time then coding help will be awesome!

And yes please on your other offer too. I’ll PM you with some questions once I’ve got a better structure locked down. Looking forward to learning more!

Ah okay, so I obviously missed a lot between my internet dying and sleeping.
** Learns to read the entire thread before posting a reply to one person. **

Sorry to everyone who had it rough there. :disappointed: This is meant to be a safe place so thanks for taking positive action with the flagging.

Moving on, I’d appreciate some feedback on the game structure. Should I just ditch the ‘entertainment’ part and work on a straight-up resource for inclusion?

Originally I included it because I was going to make this a game where attributes were randomly assigned to you (just like RL) but changed it to focus specifically on the way characters are depicted in fiction, and open up the options so people had a choice in learning about more than just whatever was assigned to them.

I’m a Chinese, autistic ADHD art student who can’t speak Chinese and has an interest in the occult.

Am I sufficiently trope-breaking?

All true and yet if the “Through Broken Lenses” game is going to allow race and skin color selection in addition to gender I would want my character there to be the spitting image of the “All American Boy” from the 1950’s and 60’s (so white, blond and male), but in that case because it enhances the fish out of water experience and because appearance wise those characteristics are some of the least likely to be associated with child soldier/slave. Of course like all of my mc he still wouldn’t be straight (a fact which would probably have carried a death sentence, formally or not in the sort of place our mc there was likely born).
All I’m saying is there can be cases where it can be delightfully subversive to be white and male.

Please try to keep the entertainment in, if you can, otherwise it can and likely will devolve very quickly into a moralizing, preachy lecture, with some token choices. Aside from being no fun at all that may actually be frightfully likely to accomplish to opposite of what you’re aiming for.
Of course if you think you’ve got Obama level speech(ifying) skills and really want a serious approach, then by all means go for it.

You’re an awesome human and thus I salute your trope defying-ness.

Ugh I identify with the ‘don’t speak ___’. My Japanese is terrible.

Would I be able to ask you some questions about representation once I start writing?

Oh haha, this I want to avoid. I have enough issues sounding like I’ve swallowed a self-help guide without adding to it.

I wish. Nah, while I’m generally a serious person I can only write like a dry-humoured ultra self-aware self-deprecating weirdo.

Quite frankly I prefer having Life and Death carrying the story, I just wasn’t sure if anyone else agreed or if it came across as distracting/unnecessary.

Sure, I’d love to help however I can!

I’d be happy to answer questions (especially about physical disability and adapting as lots of my friends are physically disabled, and so notice a lot of things) but I can’t help with coding or writing as I have my education to worry about…

A stereotype that I’ve noticed in media a lot is that when a character becomes injured for life they either shrug it off and act all optimistic or they become a really nice person if they weren’t so before. In reality though, five of my friends who were the nicest people you could meet and extremely extroverted, changed when they became disabled; they act like normal around me and their family but are now quite cruel and cynical around strangers.

I’m not intending to dehumanize anyone, nor am I saying that this happens to everyone who goes through this, I’m simply stating what I’ve noticed with people around me

Eyyy, same here

Cool! Despite it being short, I enjoyed the demo. Can’t wait for the full story!

Please do not bump old WIP threads. If the original author wants this unlocked, please let me know.
