神龍之土 Land of the Dragon [WIP] (09/07/20 Update! The Uprising Appears!)

@lokidemon007 hypothetically, lol. Some aspects of that might be explored in certain rather uh niche (?) Endings…

opens mouth

Uhh… :joy: the eternal struggle between giving arc info/worldbuilding and trying not to spoil… Well this isn’t a mystery game anyways so I’m okay with you guys guessing plot direction so long as I don’t ruin plot twists so early on.

@sljzz? I’m not familiar w the term 妖修 but certainly Yue is a cat spirit aka 猫妖. How may potentially be a spoiler so uhh haha shh for now.

@Logan3000x as mentioned before you can spread a rumor convincing ppl he’s not the son of the Emperor near the end of the game, but how effective it is will vary on MC’s prior choices and stats.

妖修:animals who are actively and consciously training/absorbing ambient energy/finding theirselves/ whatever they do to become more powerful as a 妖, as opposed to those that are born as magical creatures or naturally evolve due to longetivity. The animal equivalent to the magical community, basically.

Always loved non-human characters, they often provide unique perspectives. The average housecat would probably laugh its head off at all these silly humans squabbling over the right to order each other around.

Sorry for causing your struggle! I am mainly trying to get a feel of what the character would do in a hypothetical scenario (as a gauge for what kind of person they are), instead of what will actually happen. If I’m wandering into spoiler territory, feel free to ignore me!
Though a refusal to answer is in and of itself a spoiler, under certain conditions. Hmm…

Ahh, i see! In that case Yue the cat would probably fall under the category of 妖修, although some other animals that will appear in the game (like the tiger) would be… something else.

Haha, I think you’d like choice of the cat(?) then!

It’s alright, I’m happy to share about my characters lol. Feel free to ask away!

I just finished the demo and I am blushing like a maniac right now. Uuuugh!!! It’s a tie between Long Quian and Chen… I can’t choose :frowning: Then again, I’m very excited for Jin- I think he’s going to be the wild card character, right? Any thing you can share about him?

I believe Jin is “them” instead of “him” :kissing:
But yesssss, I’m excited for Jin as well!

@JustcallmeAlex I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying it so far! And yup, @Kirlett is right - Jin is non-binary, so they/them are the right pronouns. Since they are one of the currently two major characters planned in game who are nb, there will be some backstory about why they struggled with gender identity issues as a child which eventually led them to establish their own label that they are finally happy with now, since the setting is fantasy ancient China.

As for personality, Jin has a bit of a martyr complex as the leader of the Uprising. As a result sometimes they can seem like a cuckoolander - but they’re a friendly, charismatic one, so it’s become a unique, charming characteristic of theirs.

Does Jin hate people who are royalty? Will they have anything against you at the start?
Their story seems very similar to a Korean drama called Rebel by the way

Hmm, I wouldn’t say so. Although they do think there’re serious problems w the current traditionalist court that constantly perpetuates nepotism which led to their mother being essentially killed at the hands of corrupt power abusing provincial Govt, they’re not going to blame the entire system on MC just bc they happened to be born a royal. However, that doesn’t mean they and the people around them won’t make use of MC to do… Spoilery things…

Ooh, I hadn’t heard of the drama, but I love historical drama (whO wOuLdVe guessed) so thanks for the rec! I did a quick wiki search and I think the plot for that rebellion org indicated more from a Robin Hood esque situation? That isn’t the case for the Uprising, but there will definitely be similarities bc yknow peasant uprisings in medieval setting usually originate from the same few reasons. And the Uprising was actually inspired/is paying homage to the 黄巾起义aka the Yellow Turban Rebellion(?) hence the yellow headband Jin is sporting in the mini family tree!

The part with the corrupt power abusing governors is the same as in Rebel, the male lead is the son of a servant who have to work for a cruel governor in a timeline where the nobility owns the servants like slaves and nobles have absolute power. His mother was also killed by the governor in the second or third episode

I guess the difference is that in Rebel he was born with super strength and he’s a strong fighter and Jim doesn’t sound like a fighter.

Oops, sorry for the long, unannounced absence after the weekly update promises! Real life caught up on me. There is no better proof of this than me not even having checked out at least the demo of Fallen Hero, lol. Writing progress has been slow, and will probably continue at a slower pace bc other than real world obligations, I’ve also officially fallen into the classical history interest pit(?)

What this means is that I’ve been getting distracted writing historical fiction I’ll be halving my leisure time between library books on Ancient Rome (heh, one advantage of reading in a less mainstream genre is that the books r always in pristine condition lol) and writing, until my writing muse overpowers my reading desire and I get back on track lol.

But downer(?) news aside, here’s an update!

  • Chapter 1 End :flushed:

  • A Brief Glimpse of Jin :tm:

  • Some more Carriage Shenanigans :smirk:

Also, because Chapter 2 will contain a lil plot twist, I’m going to hold off updates there in case on continuity problems until I finish the reveal in Chapter 3 (feel free to guess who what when where why hows lol):joy: instead the next update will probably be a glossary update (yay worldbuilding! yay hints! yay names in case they get hard to remember!) Since I’m terrible at worldbuilding all in the first few chapters without dumping lore, and y’all r a curious bunch, I’ve decided to do some explaining in the form of a glossary menu.

Okay, I think that’s all I have to report, gtg back to finally replying dms

And then she… Smiles. It is a smile far from perfected, like the polite one she offered you before - but beautiful beyond comparison.

perfect

And there’s a bad label error(jin appearence) after end of carriage scene

@AmericanShakespeare @Phoenix_Wolf thanks for the bug catching, those should be fixed now! Regarding the perfect VS perfected I used perfected to suggest that Fang Yun puts conscious effort into making her smile perfect, compared to her naturally having a perfect smile. Idk if it’s a grammatical error this way though…

Using perfected seems to be off for that sentence for some reason though my English is not that perfect.

And then she smiles… It is not the smile reserved for polite company but a geniune smile, much more beautiful beyond compare.

Or you could use a practised smile?

If you use perfect instead of perfected it’d give same meaning as you’ve already written which ‘perfect’ it was later in the sentence.
