It’s always a pleasure reading about all your different Guens.
I like seeing people talk about their variant Guens like you @buggygirl11.
I just replayed Guen again, seeing everyone talking about their various Guens definitely put me in mind of the doppelganger scene.
ponders Now if Guen could only have rallied them…doppelgangsters?
Probably half of the others would try the same thing and the other half ignoring the first half. Cue power-struggle. They ‘are’ you, after all.
I admit, if I can, I hope to be able to commission an artist to do a version of that scene. Chaos in the Courtyard
Oh, a lot of Gwen and Mal’s… What a picture it’d be!
@Audien Aww, thank you! It’s always nice to know that people read/care about them. I mean, I’d probably post about them anyway, just because without the Guencaps to refer back to I’d NEVER be able to keep 14 Guens straight in my head.
But knowing people like them definitely makes me feel less self-conscious about it.
@Lys Thank you! I love writing about them! Though right now I’m mostly just waiting for @jeantown to finish Book II so I can write what will probably be the MOST MASSIVE GUENCAP OF ALL TIME (since I have to do all 14 Guens in their chosen branch, then what they would have done in the branches they didn’t take…so yeah. It’s going to be huge. I’ll probably have to split it up).
I have to say, I really appreciate the thought you put into the main character. It’s great that we can envision her and change her personality to suit our own playthroughs!
Just wondering though, will we ever get to re-address the issue of ‘would Arthur be doing the same thing if it were any other girl’ thing? I know it was mentioned in book 1, but just wondering if it would ever come up again.
Also, for people like me who are…ahem notoriously terrible at choice of games, how difficult do you think it might be to achieve a decent ending? ‘Decent’ as in, Britain’s not gone to hell and Guen isn’t the most hated figure around? Cause, knowing me, yikes…
I never post in forums so this is a little weird for me to be honest, but I just had to tell you how much I appreciate your work!
On your fir/st question, do you mean would he be as nice? Or as in not letting you fight, or understanding reasons for not having sex? Either way, I think Arthur likes us, and even at 0 trust he is still kind, however all that happens is he doesn’t… trust you. So he, I think, would be as nice to anyone, since he even shown forgiveness to Meligaunt.
And try to focus in two stats, probably light magic and dark magic (as dark needs tons of preparations, light needs none)
Dark magic and Leadership
Light and sword.
I guess any combos could be could, but due to how the stat checks work don’t go for all 4, I’d recommend focusing on 2 or 3
I prefer light magic and leadership. Fit like a glove for tactics and for political reasons. With light people trust you as good easily. You could use cure Meliagunt to cause Havoc. Heal your troops and boost their morale .
@Jaskn_King Roger Ray’s entry for historiography in the Oxford Dictionary of the Middle Ages is particularly enlightening on medieval notions of “accuracy.” Sadly not available online, but any decent research library should have it. Among other things, Ray talks about medieval chroniclers complaining that “nothing true happened this year,” meaning nothing reflective/instructive of divine truth.
very true.
More tension makes for a better story!
@simza Thank you for posting! To answer your second question first, I’m a lot less interested in “good” and “bad” endings than I am in having lots of different endings that make sense. I hate it when I play an IF game and I choose the options that seem to make the most sense for what I want to happen, and then I get a “bad” ending and I either have to replay a zillion times or look up a game guide (which takes a lot of the fun out of it for me). Yes, it will be possible for the side Guen doesn’t choose to win the throne at the end of the story, but I’d like to try to make those endings as interesting as the endings where Guen’s side wins. And I hope that the endings will seem like a logical consequence of your choices. My least favorite thing in IF is when I find out that in order to get the “good” ending, I had to order a croissant rather than a bagel back in the second scene, with nothing to indicate that the croissant was the right choice. So I guess the short answer is, if it turns out to be difficult to achieve a decent ending, I won’t have fulfilled my vision for the game… and if, having achieved one decent ending, you don’t immediately want to start over and try for a totally different decent ending, I also won’t have fulfilled my vision for the game.
That’s a really good question. Honestly, I don’t have a specific plan to address it again, but I expect it will probably come up organically as things progress. Is there a particular way you’re imagining it coming up again?
Definitely true. That’s just Arthur’s nature.
Not really. Haha. I just thought it was really interesting! I guess my own thoughts were more, Arthur’s so sweet and nice to everyone, so it was like, Guen suddenly felt like she was replaceable and it hurt her, but he didn’t mean it to hurt her, and gosh, it’s just an inner conflict that I really love that adds something so much more to Arthur’s niceness! A level of uncertainty that made the romance seem a lot more human, I guess? Of course, i’m happy-fluff trash so it’s also nice that we have the option not to focus on that issue too. (And I do love the other characters as well! They’re all really likable.)
I burst out laughing at that, but yeah, I definitely agree! I’m really looking forward to seeing these endings now. I’m a lot less scared of “failing” in the traditional sense. You seem to write with so much care, i’ve already replayed multiple times since last year when I first came across this WIP. Really appreciate everything you do, especially here on the forums!
@poison_mara and @fairlyfairfighter Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Yeah, that’s probably where i’ve been going wrong with this particular game because for some reason my mind thought it was a good idea to try to spread focus on all 4 stats?? SIGH.
Well you could spread your stats across all four, and if you make the right choices you will still get a good game [quote=“jeantown, post:6441, topic:1996”]
I hate it when I play an IF game and I choose the options that seem to make the most sense for what I want to happen, and then I get a “bad” ending

So if your making very reasonable decisions and such, you should still get a good ending. Just get a stat over 21/20 to save Maris/Bretta.
Look at this from a real time situations. You want to acquire a good job so what you do. You truly try to maximize your strong points at least one. If not you end with a middle ground assets that won’t give you a good chance to get good job options. Jack of all trades master of none
Sounds like a teacher or nanny.
I agree; it does add a touch of… doubt? that I find interesting, and probably will play with a little more. Arthur is genuinely a nice person, but his niceness tends to obscure what he’s really thinking. I would go so far as to say that even if he and Guen have a great relationship by the beginning of part 2, she still doesn’t completely know him – and it may take some less-than-happy experiences before she really does.
And thank you for your other nice comments! I hope you like the endings (in 1000 years when we get there).
[ please read this in the classic, dramatically deep narrator voice ]
A thousand years in the making
A land both familiar and new
A story of love, loss… and lust
Guenevere, as created by… @jeantown
[ read in a geeky fan-voice (i.e., mine!) ]
Worth waiting for.
@Taylor_Enean I totally lost it at the cigarette. And could also hear the whole thing in my head, actually.
@jeantown I don’t think I have ever effused how much I love your Arthur. I’m getting really bored by a lot of Arthurs I’ve been seeing recently- you’d think evil versions would be interesting, but people don’t do it well. And then people make him this like…cut-out of every other Arthur ever (which is the perfect ready made mature king with no faults, who maybe has low self-esteem) that doesn’t have much depth and is the same old same old? Like people either go one way entirely to be different or do the same thing to be safe and just play around with the other characters.
I like how young Arthur is, and how Guenevere is actually older and can be more experienced than he is- it doesn’t feel like a trapped situation, you feel like two people who are kids but who are also trained for a lot of responsibility and the weird duality of that. No matter how you play Guen, there is a kind of youth that comes off of her and Arthur comes off the same way- young, enthusiastic and amazingly forward thinking, a little naive, and a little guarded due to be being made king so young and having so much put on his shoulders. Morgana and Lance both have their shells to break through but Arthur’s is kind of more subtle, to the point you might not even try to see because you assume he has everything on his sleeve, so people might end up missing it, if that makes sense.
Blah, sorry to babble sort of incoherently. But yeah I love him, and immediately wanted to help him achieve his goals- in-game it says he inspires people to follow him and protect him, and for me as a player, that is definitely what he inspired in me.
@jeantown: Hi! Just a quick question: When referring to a celibate romance with Lancelot, is there a way to make it conditionally celibate? IE: No more celibacy after we’ve sorted this magic thing out/ We can do whatever once I’ve had Arthur’s child. Also, would it be possible to have a Guen who can be more forthright with telling Lancelot her duty comes before her heart- and that while she loves Lance, she still needs to have Arthurs child.
I just wonder how Lancelot would verbally respond to that…
There’s just so much game!!! I have no idea how much more content I’ve got to go through before reaching the end of what’s up so far- I’m at the part where Guen needs to make a big decision about what to do next- look for Morgana, go to Camelot to deal with the invasion, go to Frankmarch, or go to Michaelsmount. Seriously I love how long this game is as a WIP. And my favorite part? The Guen-dopplegangers. It’s like an old B-rated movie except fun- and how they’re all different versions of Guenevere- I bet you could end up as the other Guen’s in other playthroughs. I gave up the carrot to feed the sheep, but I have to wonder what happens if you just… keep it. I hope it’s not like keeping the slab of meat in Dragon Quest… Ah well- I love the game. I could espouse endless praise for your skill at writing. Especially under such conditions, keeping it all so wonderfully cohesive.

When the kingdom finds out about who Mordred’s real father is, will there be a public speech? If yes, how will Arthur explain the situation? Will his explanation change depending on his relationship with Morgana at that time? Will Morgana be able to explain or will the kingdom automatically assume it was her fault, and demand a punishment?
