February 2025 Writer Support Thread

As someone who basically did this for Guns of Infinity a decade ago?

Do it.

I haven’t been as specific with jotting down how many words were done each day, but I checked how much the word count has increased since I first posted about a week ago as a milestone reward and… I’ve done 20k words.

I’m kinda worried. I was hoping to have a healthier relationship with writing this time around, since my usual pattern so far has been → writing a whole bunch for a month → dropping off the face of the planet for a few months to a year and → coming back to repeat the process. I did this by not being strict about word counts and how productive I’m being, but it seems I’m falling for old habits.

My partner jokes every time that I write like I’m running out of time, and she’s right. Quite frankly, I don’t know how else to write. Outside of forcing myself to “clock out” so to speak, I don’t know how to stop myself from writing like a madman before proceeding to burn out.

I wouldnt find it offputting, just a little odd.

You could force yourself to take specific days off of writing instead, so you’re getting regular break, but leave yourself room to feel inspired.

Uptightness–and if that’s even close to right, I think making it “uptight” could dissipate 99% of the erotica connotations.

Or, in a very particular story context, I’d be inclined to guess it measures attitude toward security. Here, subbing in “lax” for “loose” could help.

…I’m just picturing knitting structure now.

One of the recent changes in Quiver was the introduction of Mary as Female Robin’s cellmate as I thought it might be weird that it was always Arthur.

However, my issue now is the cellmate is a minor character only during the jail sequence (no current plans for bringing them back) so I don’t know what to do for a non-binary Robin. If the character had a larger role then it would be simple to create a third non-binary cellmate but as they aren’t in other scenes I feel a non-binary character here would be seen as a cheap representation.

So my other idea was to let a NB Robin get to pick which cellmate they were bunked with so they can choose Arthur or Mary? Basically picking the one they are most comfortable with?

Third option change the cellmate to just a fellow prisoner and not have a cellmate.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Do the CoG/HG demos on Steam use ads as well (I tend to stick to Android for these)? Asking because of the new changes there.

Uh, I’m not seeing any CoG/HG demos on Steam? So dunno how to answer that question.

Oh you actually did then, thanks. I thought demos were published there as well.

(Actually, there are plenty of demos so have a look I guess, but none appear ad supported?)

Not like I was about to go through all the catalogue… I assumed they all would have demos then, so I went through just half a dozen or so.

Anyway. I’m currently wondering if my penchant for bilingual (trilingual… quadrodialectical?) writing will have a negative effect on my potential audience. I mean, not like I’d not do that - I want to write it - but I’m wondering.

168 CoG games, 167 demos. Anyway, moving on…

The more you add, the smaller it is likely to get. But also the more people with the same penchant could identify. Never a good idea to write for the numbers, write what works for you.

I think that’s only true if this character is the only NB side-character in the entire game. So long as you’ve got some other nonbinary characters or ROs running around, it should be fine.

While allowing an NB Robin to pick whether they want Arthur or Mary as a cellmate is also a good solution, personally I would love to have an NB side-character that matched my MC. Even if they never showed up again. It would be nice.

I think it depends a lot on what your intentions are with the setting, how being nonbinary works in your world, and what you’re wanting to do with it. As @valence says, if there are no other nonbinary characters in the game, then yes a one-off character would feel cheap. If there are other, more major nonbinary characters around, then it could feel more like showing an alternate-historical setting’s attitude towards gender that differs from how things would have been handled in “real” history.

If a game is exploring being nonbinary beyond pronoun-swaps (and sticking to pronoun swaps is generally OK, for me), I’d probably rather it be explored in other/additional ways than gender-separated prisons.

I didn’t think to look beyond the store pages for the games (I tend to have tech issues when I do that), and they’re not all linked there, apparently. I didn’t know Steam does that, so I didn’t think to check.

Probably, but it might also gain you some readers.

Initially, I planned for Quiver to be gender-locked male as I was going to submit it to Heart’s Choice; however, after the rejection last year and thinking about it some more, I decided I’d rather have a gender choice to let more people enjoy it.

At the moment it is basic pronoun swaps but I am looking for ways to add more nuance to it letting a certain gender Robin approach things differently. (an early idea for example is offering a female Robin the opportunity to gain access to a noble’s home as a tutor for their young daughter or a Non-binary Robin could gain access when they are hired to teach a child who is also non-binary to help them - this isn’t in the game yet just a thought )

As for the prison itself, it wouldn’t be gender-separate prisons as both genders would be in the prison. It is more like I was unsure whether someone who plays a Female/Non-binary Robin might not like their character to have to share a cell with someone of the opposite gender (if you get what I mean?). I may just replace the cellmate with just a prisoner you can befriend. I’ll think about it.

I do intend to have other non-binary characters introduced (just waiting for the right character to introduce themselves to me!)

Do any of you have any advice on what to use to create a map? I want to add a visual reference in addition to the lore of the city in my story, and pinpoint territories. I don’t have any clue on how to create one :joy: any advice would be appreciated!

I THINK Campfire has a free mapping tool. You could check it out.
