COGDemos bugs/requests

I could read it normally but I used the link from Tumblr (specifically the one where they announced the update). The links from the pinned post on Tumblr or the one in the forum thread only keeps loading indefinitely after the prologue for me.

I think they’re different demos, since one lets you see the code (the one that keeps loading) and the other not.

Oh, mystery solved. I guess I opened the link from the intro post. Thanks!

I’ll ask the dev to see if he can make them smaller but still readable.

This is how it looks on my iOS, with Safari

Yeah, that’s how it looks on my phone. If you use the arrow, you can shrink it up so at least the top menu bar is gone. But there are so many buttons now, it really is taking up room.

The buttons are auto-sized, so I think changing “show stats” to “stats” will shrink that button. Maybe a symbol for restart (like an arrow going in a circle, kind of alike the refresh button in the browser). “Saved Games” could become “Saves”.

I may tinker a bit tonight and see if any of that helps. If it does, I can take care of it. Otherwise, I’ll leave it to the dev–he doesn’t care for my changes in the mobile-friendly layouts, lol.

Maybe letting the player change the buttons’ font size?

It’s definitely weird because I’m also on Safari and it looks bigger on mine for some reason. See how they overlap a bit as compared to LilliArch’s?

I do love the addition of the quick save button. But all your ideas sound pretty good and like they would help immensely.

Aha! The difference is the black background! (It’s overlapping with me too when I switch to black background.) Some css issue maybe?

(…why do some games have “settings” and some games have “menu”?)

You added quick save, how about quick load?

I don’t know. I will check it out later. This week has been hell so far, so I haven’t had a chance to do much of anything on this.

In the interest of not having more buttons (which is already an issue), it’s under “Saved Games”. The quick save is at the top of the list, so all you have to do is load it (just have to choose whether it’s a local quicksave or a server quicksave).

I think it’s fine as it is, maybe some arrow to hide the buttons like the button to hide the header? Or like the released games like a drop-down button next to show stats?

I’ll take a look at that after I deal with the newest change, which is handling the google translate issue.

I need some volunteers to help test on my backup server (which is blocked from public access right now, so I will temporarily stop blocking by IP if I can get a group to help out).

The dev had some issues getting google translate to work with the i-frame used to display the game, so he ended up recoding the entire front end and how it handles displaying the game. For that reason, I’m not keen on a quick test then putting it into prod for testing. I’m not sure what will break on it, whether it will cause the problem to return with achievements and images, and whether everything will work as expected. I’m one person testing, and there is way too much involved to rely on my ability to use a game or two to test.

So… I ask on bended knee (and I don’t bend the knee to anyone, so this is big! :stuck_out_tongue:) for a small group of people to help test. stares at @jcollins with puppy dog eyes I need a two or three authors and a handful of players to do this. If you can upload your public demo, get a few of your players to try it out with the new changes–along with a couple of players who can try out google transllate with the games–and then, after a few days, make a change to your demo (add some pictures, change some text, whatever), and let your players test again, it would be greatly appreciated.

If not, I’m not sure when this change will go in, because I am not willing to put it up without extensive testing. Not when things are finally running smoothly (seemingly).

Anyone interested and willing to help, please let me know. Those who read games in non-English will be a huge help, since that’s the main reason this change was made.

I’m getting the same 500 error for the game called “Love In Ancient Times” on the CoGDemos site. I’m presented with the following error message on clicking the play button from the main games list. Refresh changes nothing. And I couldn’t find another way to contact the author since the “discuss” button attempts to open an email client, which I assumed led to the same email below. I’d already used it, and found out it wasn’t meant for supporting games on CoGDemos site. Also couldn’t find a thread for that particular game, so thought I’d try here, short of posting a public looking for author thread.

Our apologies; there was a 500 error while loading game data. Please refresh your browser now; if that doesn’t work, please email support-game-id-3726-web@choiceofgames.com with details.

Can help as player. Multi-lingo.

It does not. I assume it is, in fact, the author’s email.

Thank you! Once I get it set up, I’ll post the link to the site here. My weekend ended up being a whirlwind, and my work week has started with the same amount of stress, so I haven’t had a chance to do it yet. Hopefully, I can take care of it tomorrow night.

I checked the game. The author created the game, but there are no scenes files uploaded (or they were deleted). That’s what’s causing the 500 error.

Thanks! That will be a huge help!

That brings me an idea, would it be possible to hide games without scenes files from the public list?

Yeah, I think we can manage that. I’ll wait until this new format is tested to make that change, though. I don’t want to make a code change, then have to do it and test it again after I pull the new code (supposing it works as it should).
