This question/discussion has been brought up before in these threads so I will be closing this thread as others have discussed it before (mods feel free to open it if you feel it’s necessary however! )
I’m talking about physical descriptors that have no use whatsoever as the story progresses. As you might be able to tell I’m actually not a fan I’ve found.
I’ve found a thread on genders but not much else but I’ve been wondering about this one and other physical attributes of our characters. I’ve played games that go to some lengths to make us define our character’s looks and then never use that information. Gender obviously plays into things like addressing our character but if their build or …
Posted because I am on a train and bored. Before buying a game–or clicking on a WIP’s demo link–what is the FIRST thing you look for? (Put another way, what does a game or WIP MUST have for you to click or be interested? Or what is the first thing that turns you off?) And why?
poll
As for me, I always check the quality of the writing first. I’ll usually read anything (in any genre, gender-locked or not, etc.) if the writing seems good to exceptional. In WIP threads, if I see typos in the summar…
This one includes a poll and customization ranks second to last on the list.
I see a lot of games around where, in the beginning of the game, you spent time choosing things like hair colour and skin colour and body type and tattoos and what have you. In a game that is set entirely in your imagination and a character that is entirely of your own creation, why would you need to choose these options concretely when it’s easy enough to imagine whatever you want? Is it to solidify an idea in your own head? Is it worth slowing down and dragging out the start of the story and b…
I currently have gender, name, height, hair color/length, eye color, beard/no beard for men, age, and weight as part of the introductory scene. Is there anything else appearance wise that I should consider adding?
Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything, but maybe the community can help!
I’m curious what my fellow CoGgers think about how much the player should be able to customise?
It’s a given in the official CoGs to be able to choose the gender of the MC. But games like Sabres of Infinty and Vendetta have set male MCs whilst others like Heal, A clueless teens guide to the supernatural (originally) and Guenevere have set female MCs. This doesn’t bother me personally as long as the story interests me
From your own POV as both a player/game designer what do you think you should…
How much customization is too much customization? Or do you not believe in it? Do you just like it if it matters in the future? Like somewhere down the line, your eye color suddenly comes up or do you like it period point blank, whether or not it effects the story.
When I ask this, I’m not just talking about your MC look, I am also talking about your family. Do you like to customize their names as well, especially if they aren’t minor characters. And if so, do you wish you could customize them …
As a reader, I like to be able to visualize characters, especially major characters, in terms of their general physical appearance. As a writer of linear prose, I usually have clear mental images of the major characters in my stories. I will tend to include physical descriptions, although economically. When (trying to) write IF, customizing the PC’s physical appearance is a dilemma I keep coming back to.
Adding lots of physical traits for the reader to choose can make character creation longer …
The main thing that prompted me to start writing with ChoiceScript is the opportunity to shape the story on the reader’s choices. When you write a novel, you’re forced to give a single direction to the story. With ChoiceScript, on the other hand, I’m very tempted to give different directions to my main, single idea.
Here comes the question. How much customization are you willing to accept for an immersive “gaming experience”?
In this story, you wake up in the middle of the apocalypse. In addit…
How important do you find the ability to customize the appearance of the MC and how important do you find it that these customizations have importance in the story.
Or would you rather let your imagination handle the appearance of the MC?
