Are there any rules for a choicescript game?

@FairyGodfeather Thank you so much for posting that. There was a brief part of the game I’m making where your character (a sentient flower) had the option of smacking a kid with a vine to defend themselves from being plucked out of the ground. That would likely count as a depiction of “violence or abuse of children”, so I’ll need to rewrite that part, and avoid anything similar in the future. It would have been horrible to only learn of that rule after I submitted the beta version to CoG. You did me a huge favor.

That’s odd. Didn’t choice of intrigues allow you to poison your sibling’s kid? Or is it one of those things where vague allusions are okay but vivid descriptions aren’t?

I’ve no idea. I would think that smacking a child would probably be allowed as part of a greater story, as long as it’s not a game that encourages or glorifies in child abuse. Since @kakistocracy is right. Choice of Intrigues has the option for you to murder your sibling’s stepchild.

Apple seems rather inconsistent with it’s enforcement of any sort of set “guidelines”. I’m pretty sure they’re just regulating what could be considered “extreme” or things that might encourage highly immoral, distasteful, or controversial behaviour. But, as it was stated before, better to err on the side of caution, I suppose.

Apple’s a big corporation whose rules and enforcement are decided by white men in suits with degrees in marketing. In other words, they don’t actually care about anything unless someone complains or might complain, but anything that has the vague potential to create a scandal will be stepped on in the name of Profit.

Their guidelines are inconsistent for this reason; blind corporate behemoths are like that.

@Endmaster r u by any chance from chooseyourstory?

@akatsuki9344

I’m originally from Infinite Story, but yeah I do tend to hang out at CYS a lot more nowadays.

are you planning on making anymore games like eternal in cog? cause i love that game just not enough choice but i guess thats how cys is suppose to be.

Not in the foreseeable future since I’m not really interested in the coding aspect and I’m busy working on finishing up the last path for Eternal anyway.

And like I half joked several posts above. Just about anything I write usually includes one or more of those guideline breakers usually fairly early in the story. I’d probably have to severely tone down the language, the graphic violence (and sometimes graphic sex) and get rid of the occasional offensive mean spirited content. All of which of course I wouldn’t be willing to do.

so the game can’t have any of those even if it is in the hosted category?

and @EndMaster are you working on any new games for CYS?

I have no idea, one of the mods or admins would probably be able to answer that question better than I could, I’ve never really read all the guidelines, rules, etc. Just what I’ve seen that Fairygodfeather posted and general comments on this sort of topic brought up a few times before in the past on the forums.

Anyway, while this is probably getting off topic from the original question, I’ll just answer your question quickly. Lots of ideas and outlines, but unfortunately a lot less time than I used to have.

Basically if I find the time, I’ll probably be working on something new after Eternal.

oh cool will look forward to it and can a mod answer my question?

Scroll up @akatsuki9344 your question has been answered above by Havenstone.

but she says she isn’t sure

You did ask for a mod’s opinion and Havenstone is a mod. You could always mail choice of games and ask them for a definitive answer.

well i am not really planning on making any offensive or sex scenes but i might make extreme violence but that can change anytime so… yeah don’t think i need to go to that intensity and email but shouldn’t @jasonstevanhill know this?
and i am pretty sure that a game of mine will make it to the hosted column anytime soon… i have a habit of leaving games unfinished

Hstone: "Basically, CoG has no line – even if something is incredibly offensive but they think it has “artistic merit,” they’re happy to publish it.

The rules you need to worry about are the Apple store rules, which are much more squeaky clean. That’s the real reason there are few R-rated games on this site."

FGfeather: “There’s an article disecting the app store review guidelines at http://appadvice.com/appnn/2010/09/apples-app-store-review-guidelines-annotated-explained

JShill: "It’s worth nothing, how all these rules apply to written works is unclear. I mean, do they read through every iteration of every game? I doubt it.

At the same time, if Apple decided that one game was violating their TOS, they might very well suspend our account as a whole, “just to be safe”."

If this doesn’t answer your question, I don’t know what does.

yes yes i know but what i am asking is do the player made hosted game thingy follow the apple rule

Of course they do. It’s APPLES RULES! Ultimately, apple decides what does and doesn’t get turned into an app. Thought that was pretty self explanatory.

but not all the hosted games are buyable some are for free… unless something has changed while i was away
