Hello and welcome to the April 2025 support thread. Happy Birthday to April babies () and happy month to everyone. I hope you all reach your writing goals, or at the very least have fun writing what you love.
Speaking of having fun with your writing; Are there any words you’re just itching to use? Any nouns, verbs, adjectives or phrases you particularly like, or which you’ve only recently learned about? I certainly can’t wait to write “erinaceous” or “echopraxia” the moment I get an excuse to do so.
If not, perhaps you’ll find some interesting words here:
In April, I would like to write 25k words of Meteoric. That’s more than I’ve written in a month in years, but I wrote 2k words yesterday and I’ve been in a groove and very motivated lately
This is a rest month for me due to school holidays and, at the end of April I’m going on holiday to the north coast of Scotland. This first week is normal, though; I’ll be doing some outlining and coding.
April’s initial goal was to go over Chapter Two of Quiver but as I finished that chapter at the halfway point in March I managed to go over it already.
So, my new goal is to write Chapter Three, continuing my daily goal of 800+ words.
I’ve also got a sub-goal to code a combat system that refines the old system I was using back when I was writing Rookfall. Which revolved around choosing which direction you go and what kind of attack or defensive move you wanted.
I want to complete the next update for my WIP. I’ve set a deadline, and this month, I really do hope that there’s a cute little tick mark next to that deadline.
This month, my editor invited me to set writing goals and write alongside her. My goal will be 30k words. If I get permission, I’ll add a link to the tracking bear in this thread later on.
So, some videos I have liked on writing.
This first one is about a different approach to character sheets and character creation. While this is for scripts, the method words are just as useful for us. I’m a big fan of how this YouTuber approaches characters and storytelling and hope to be half as good as he makes things sound.
This second one is a deep dive into the use of metaphors in writing. This is another YouTuber I highly recommend.
I’ll be sharing more from these two in the future.
April is here! New month, new goals. And hopefully a progress!
As I read back on what I’m working on, I realized that it’s not really game-y. Cozy soft romance, wholesome stories are great, but it’s not very game-y, it’s a story when you just want to relax. Stardew Valley, but even with the coziness, it has the exciting-crazy stuffs like the mines and Skull Cavern.
So yeah, I’m realizing I might need to implement the secondary genre low-fantasy lol I was planning it to be just a passing mention, but now I need to give it a bigger role because the way it is now, it might as well just a pure romance story, and not an interactive one. It might even be tied to the overarching plot if the opportunity arise.
So yeah, my April goals:
Give low-fantasy a bigger role.
Make it more game-y
And finally work on writing at least half of Chapter 1
Yeah, I’m seeing a lot more brainstorming this month lol
I’m planning to finish writing and editing Chapter One - should be quite achievable if my month does not devolve into the mess it did last month. In fact I’m hoping I can do it in three weeks.
My goal this month is to build more confidence and get a post organized for the Interest Thread. Writing-wise I’d like to get in about 2k a week if possible.
I’ve got an attachment to niche connective words like “hitherto” and “henceforth.” I like the rhythm, even if they aren’t all that practical.
After getting some feedback on a few premises in the Interest Check thread I’ve narrowed down my first Choicescript project to one of two options; I’m going to give the poll another day or so and then pick one based on how pleased or disappointed I am when I see the winner. Right now they’re ±5 votes of each other so it might be a very close race.
After that, my goal is to get all the pre-writing done; rough outline, character write-ups, research, and - ideally - an articy choice map and beat sheet. If I’m efficient enough to get to the writing stage, I’d like to aim for a steady word-rate.
I would like to be able to track my progress on my devlog youtube channel, but we’ll see how that goes. I’m still laid off but I try to approach job hunting like a job, so my free time is limited, and my narrative analysis channel takes time to maintain.
As a bonus goal I’m going to try and get my workflow smooth enough that I can accommodate a second game dev project, possibly a month-long parser IF.
Scotland! That’s so cool. I’m jealous of you lol.
As for me I just want to blast kick Velocity to the CoG devs and wait for it to be published. I just want it to end lol. When will it END!!! Lol but I am having fun writing it though.
Thanks for the thread @Omeg! This month I hope to meet a few milestones in terms of both writing and outline development. I’ve been finding myself in the situation lately of having too many ideas and not enough time (tbf I perpetually exist in this state), so I’m coping with that by pushing down on the gas pedal. It’s the only way I know
Good luck to everybody with their goals this month!
Hey guys. Thanks for making this month’s thread @Omeg.
My goals this month is first and foremost keep up my 30k a month word count. Secondly, I would like to finally make that map for my fantasy world that I keep saying I’ll do, but haven’t yet.
I can’t think of any off the top of my head, but I do have a penchant for using more archaic words when modern words would work just as well. I just like the vibes of them better.
