Much as I love to drag Rainn, I do think they initially wanted to talk somewhere private? But yeah, screw Rainn, worst break up attempt ever. Definitely deserves to be chewed out though it’s been a while so I don’t really remember how Andi reacted to them.
Me I tried to play it nice by not only asking politely who her friends was but then even offered to buy the next round and the way dismissed my MC in such a cold manner then when her friend comes over and is like is everything okay? When my MC was being overly polite and Rainn still was like not saying nothing until my MC asks her if everything is okay and then she said yes followed by the whole what are you here for spiel then saying that they was on a break. My guy came from a different country too so it is not like he can pack up and go back to Ireland. All in all it was a real dick move and to add insult to injury is how Rainn acts like he should just accept it all and let things be honky dory.
Yeah, Rainn’s reaction was pretty insulting, especially if your MC came from a whole other country. Like, what do you mean you initially encouraged me to move all the way to the United States leaving my friends and family behind and the best attempt at a break up you could do was a cold shoulder and a vague conversation and now you act like I’m being unreasonable by being upset that I changed my entire life to be with you just to find out you actually dumped me??? Bro was lucky there wasn’t a “throw a chair” option.
I swear the times that you end up running into Rainn she throws our more mixed signals then a baseball coach. Especially if you play your MC as I am where he goes out of his way to be respectful to her even though he has more reason to be anything but yet she gives off that vibe like she misses him so much. To add insult to injury though is getting those mixed signals yet seeing her out like the day after with that one dude in his car then another dude at that cafe place even if you follow the notes that she actually did see him at his one show and he was not imagining it.
Ooh, yeah, I was pretty upset about those scenes at first though now I think Rainn is just really oblivious and those interactions weren’t meant to be dates on their end? I played my MC as still really angry and hurt and going out of her way to avoid Rainn so I really enjoyed the angst regardless of whatever Rainn is up to.
I think it’s worth to keep in mind that the whole setup of the story is presented from viewpoint of MC, who is not in any way guaranteed to be a reliable narrator. As such, we really don’t know whether the break up wasn’t objectively obvious, and if the MC wasn’t deluding themselves to some extent over the months leading to their departure/arrival, ignoring things they acknowledge themselves after the fact, like reduced level of communication etc.
It’s easy to think of oneself as oh-so-wronged because “i changed my whole life for them”, but imagine for a moment a situation where your ex, whom you thought you agreed to stop seeing, after a few months suddenly shows up on your doorstep with all their stuff, totally convinced you two are going to live together because that’s what you talked about months ago, before you agreed to go on a break. And they’re all like “What are you talking about, we never agreed to stop being a couple!”
In fact, this would be pretty interesting setup for a different IF, where you are suddenly saddled with a delusional ex-partner on your hands. :v
Communication is a two-way street, yes, to some extent the PC being dense can be understandable and maybe some of this is also their fault, but when somebody sincerely thinks that everything is ready when they get the visa paperwork, uproot there entire life, move to the different side of the planet and move to completely separate country and think it’s necessary and think everything is fine and that says a lot about how badly the other person did their communication and that’s a problem. Like if they genuinely thought that relationship is over then they should have sat down explained it don’t come etc. etc. etc., this is not oops I didn’t make it clear and the PC is right next-door in New Jersey, well I mean it can be but when you’re talking international this is a complete disaster and mostly on them
Exactly! Also doesn’t help that it was all Rainn’s idea to begin with! They introduced the idea and left MC to do most of the planning by themselves without checking in for periods of time. This, along with the vague, crappy breakup attempt, did not make it clear to MC that things were over because Rainn was barely communicating to begin with and I don’t think that’s a case of unreliable narrator.
That and the simple fact that was pointed out it was Rainn’s idea for him to mo0ve, yes sure, the PC might have been dense, but that still does not mitigate that Rainn not once said during the 6 months she knew that the PC was coming say that maybe you need to slow your roll dude. Hell it states that he only showed up 3 days early, and no where did she even return text him, the only part I see where he may have been dense was in his not having even a second thought when she did not respond to his texts or calls for multiple days prior to his leaving. All that said, she could have at least sent him a text, something at all but rather she allowed him to believe that nothing was the matter.
Also, ask somebody who’s had to deal with the international visas and other basic logistics, once the ball starts rolling, the ball starts rolling, once you go through the effort of getting everything approved, once you start the new job paperwork, once the plane ticket is set, you basically have to go within a two or three weeks span, once it’s set it’s set and you don’t have much of a choice
There is that of course. In my MC’s case, he had lived on his own for a while, he chose to leave home even though of course he was in good terms but still he lived alone then uprooted his life by not only finding a new job but he was led to believe his place of residence would be at Rainn’s home, of course we all know how that went. Yes he still has a job but any new job you don’t get a pay check that first week starting so what money the MC came with is being used to until a first check is made pays for his new residence and most places, I am sure even with how nice those at Apt 502 is still will have a first and second month rent paid up front and in NYC that can be from a cheap $750 a month to $1500 a month and times that by 2 and a nice chunk of money is spent. That does not even mean the exchange rate between my MC’s Irish currency to United States Dollars. Yeah, financially alone he got screwed pretty bad and that is not even taken in consideration the heartache. All that couls have been avoided by a simple damned text.
I really want to know if there’s anything else to Rainn breaking up with MC. Because how are you going to invite me to come live with you, leave me to mostly deal with all that stuff myself, and then try and break up with me in the middle of it??? I’m job-hunting, I’m packing my things, I’m buying tickets to come to New York, I’M APPLYING FOR A VISA AND MOVING TO A WHOLE OTHER COUNTRY, DON’T TELL ME IT’S JUST BECAUSE OF WORK!!!
Right, but that’s the question – did Rainn actually know that MC was (still) planning to come, after what was, as they believed, a break/breakup talk they both agreed on? Because, again, we get MC’s narration regarding that and how they were arranging the move on their own, but did that involve communicating their intent to still come over, even as simple as “hey, i’ve applied for my visa/got my trip approved/whatever, it’s just few weeks and i can be there with you”.
Because if they did, then it really doesn’t make much sense for Rainn to react to MC’s presence with literal and puzzled “Why are you here?”
I see your point, quite well actually. I even concede that at this point there is more information we most surely need. Because as of now we don’t know if the MC did mention or say “Hey Rainn dear, I just finalized my Visa papers and my work papers are all in order, I can’t wait to see you again” because yes from what information we do have we know that the MC’s arrival is supposedly only a few days early. As for why Rainn asks “Why are you here?” that also is a very good question. However, to me that still does not take away from the fact that you did arrive as what you felt was the plan, even if she felt you was on a break she showed so much indifference towards him, might even say coldness, she was in a 3 year relationship yet in front of her friends she treated the MC like he was just some minor acquaintance that just needed to go away.
