A Nation Divided: A Civil War Officer’s Journey (WIP) [196k w/o commands| Updated 3/8/25]

I don’t know if I can find the right words to express how much I loved it. I couldn’t tear myself away—it was simply magnificent. I felt like I was right there with those people, breathing in the scent of gunpowder and blood, feeling their grim determination. Thank you so much for this work. I’m eagerly awaiting the continuation.

Updated 02/27/25:

  • Greatly fleshed out the prologue overall (+15k words)
  • New stats page! (Added a bunch of stuff here, including cool image at the top lol)
  • Tons of new states to be from, including Southern states
  • Fleshed out family, motivations, etc
  • Implemented formerly WIP battle system, implements randomness to the outcomes of decisions as the battlefield of this age is not reliable
  • Tons of flavor text improvements, additions, etc
  • Completely revamped parts of character and regiment creation
  • Revamped the way stats are done to weave it better into future acts
  • Expanded the final prologue part to be more immersive, impactful.
  • TLDR: Huge improvements mechanically alongside improvements thematically.

You read my mind - I thought that would be a super interesting route to go down, and as a result, it’s been added in the newest update

When clicking the “Show stats” button I get an error “choicescript_stats line 262: Not a number: true”

Just pushed a fix to the demo link!

When talking about the regiment, when I choose to have a green regiment I still get options that make it seems like the regiment saw combat even though Gettysburg would be their first battle, and get to choose an regiment number for an regiment that was formed during the start of the war

Too large an indent on line 1331 (just chose burn on hand)

@RedizE what no texas? As much as would love to play a mc from my state im acctually quite impressed with the list youve expanded in such a short time. Back to bed i go but looking forward to continuing the demo later on when i get a chance.

Also ran into a error when trying to look at stat screen a 301 not a number true type of message.

This is probably my favorite WIP recently! It covers the chaos and the desperation in blackpowder warfare better then any game I’ve played so far

I’m curious if we’ll get POVs from the Confederate perspective ( ie. a seasoned west point graduate or former comrades in the Indian Wars who was close friends with General Longstreet or a former cadet, if calculated and methodical personality, from VMI taught by General Jackson before choosing the Union) and being known acquaintances with others (ie. known to Lee if from Virginia or known by the captain leading the Minnesotans withdraw if MC is from Minnesota)

Thay is defintly a interesting thought and potential. :grinning:

Updated 03/01/25:

  • CHAPTER 1 OF ACT 1!
  • Expanded the prologue a good bit more, primarily the ending.
  • Fixed some issues mechanically on the backend
  • Big updates to the stats screen and presentation
  • Fixed some narrative issues (mostly continuity related)
  • First upload of Chapter 1, taking you from post-gettysburg to the beginning of the battle for pipe creek.
  • Reworked how I handle some flags so the text should be more reactive to decisions made.
  • Reworked battle sequences to a state I’m finally happy with.
  • Going to be adding a context to the stat screen soon with a brief history of the Civil War up to the point our story begins, for those who may be unfamiliar!

On a different subject i noticed in the scene with colonel preston when we first arrive at cemetery ridge after he has come from general gibson. There is a company commander called Reynolds of company a. Looks to be a error because we sre refered to as captain of company a everywhere else.
