Note that I’ve used the games’ description as the golden source for word count where it contradicts the wordcount input at the bottom of the app screen, as I feel the description will be what the reader engages with.

For the analysis, I used the number below the description, regardless of the description itself, mostly for consistency.

So it seems like whilst the word count creep hasn’t reversed, it isn’t intensifying overall (possibly some actual reversal for HG, but HG is always going to be more volatile in this way) - and this includes some absolutely massive game drops too, like Hungry Names, Time of Monsters, Green Journey, Fields of Asphodel, etc - all dropped during the 24-25 period, so it isn’t like this is just because all the Big Word authors weren’t releasing anything in this period.

The average wordcount actually started retreating again in 2025, even with some pretty big guns like Saturnine and WW2 Armored Recon.

2026’s average wordcount is low at the moment, but I think there’s an exceptionally big gun waiting in the publishing line.

The average playthrough of These Reluctant Years is (rounded up) 757,000 words. Including code, the total word count is approximately 2.8 million.
