i know that, within music, if an ip is more than 80 years old it becomes free for public use
i’m not sure if the 80 year rule extends to books as well but Bram Stoker’s Dracula pretty old at this point so i’d assume it’s free use

I remember cracked.com making fun of an anime because one of its characters was named Alucard, instead of Dracula (which is 100% public domain). So yeah.

This is an interesting premise, and I enjoyed the demo so far a lot!

about the gay pining/angst, but I guess it makes sense? Do you have a plan for an in-love-with-Lucy endstate? Is the idea that we keep her alive, marry her to someone cool/oblivious, and carry on an affair? Will Mina have a chance to break it off with Johnathan?
Lol @pimenita — I was 100% picturing Dracula as Gary Oldman, and was thrown by him being blonde.

I’m dying picturing Drac as Gary Oldman… Dude was so charming in the wip, then again I’m pretty sure it’s been a while since the last time he saw his reflection 
And please please let my girls end together. I like the pining but I need to resolve that tension.

I’m liking it so far! I’m one of the few who doesn’t have much knowledge about the source material (never read anything/watched any movies), but I’m pretty invested already anyways, which is nice. The writing really draws me in.
And I’m kind of already attached to Jonathan! The first flashback with him was sweet, but that awkward proposal really did it.
I’m eager to see more of him, although I’ll probably end up being torn between him and Dracula, who had a very intriguing introduction here, so… potential yikes for me! As for Lucy, I don’t really care too much about her or the drama in her life, but I want to be a good friend so I guess I’ll be trying to help her.

Copyright: Dracula is in the public domain, but the exact reasons depend on each country’s copyright laws.
In the US, it’s because it was published in 1897, and mostly everything up to 1923 is public domain (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_law_of_the_United_States#Works_created_before_1978).
In (most?) other countries, an author’s work enters the public domain X years after their death, X being usually about 70 (eg, the European Union: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_law_of_the_European_Union#Duration_of_protection). Bram Stoker lived until 1912, so Dracula isn’t copyrighted anymore in these countries either.
At least that’s my layperson’s understanding of it.

Love the demo so far! Do you think it would be possible to update the name of this forum with the latest update’s date? I tend to not notice when things update and only just realized I’d missed this one’s third chapter since I’m so used to other WIPs doing it. I know, I’m spoiled, but it makes it so much easier to tell updates apart from general posts around here.

About the copyright issue: I checked it before I started plotting/writing the game and I found the same information @Rosencrantz found. It’s public domain, so I think there should be no problems ^^ Still thank you for posting the sources @Rosencrantz

There are actually several ways to deal with Lucy 
You can
- marry Lucy off, but this won’t lead to an affair, this is more of a friendship thing
- choose to not marry Lucy off and marry her yourself bc I am the author and I say you can do that
- let her become a vampire and be with her
- keep her alive and be with her
As for Jonathan, yes you can break things off with him. You can also still be friends with him or not, depending on how your Mina acts.

Oh yeah, before I forget: Someone on tumblr asked me if I have considered creating a discord server for the game.
I can do that, yeah. But only if people are interested in that. It would be quite sad when only a handful of people would be on there screaming into the void.

Damn, this is really good, and I probably wouldn’t be able to tell English isn’t your first language if you hadn’t said so.
But I feel the most important question no one is asking is what about the three “brides?” I haven’t read the original book but I don’t imagine that they got any more development in it than the adaptations I’ve seen. People always make a big deal about Dracula because he’s the big bad antagonist, and just kinda dismiss the brides as disposable sexy minions, and frankly that’s a huge shame.
EDIT: Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against sexy minions.

Ahh, yes the brides I did not forget about them, rather they have their role in my story, though they will only be appearing in one of the later books ^^
In my version, they are not Dracula’s brides. They are his older sisters… triplets…
I wanted to give them some more depth than just copying Stoker’s characters.

Well considering how little there actually is there you hardly need to completely change their relationship to Dracula to give them more depth… Not that you shouldn’t if you want to.
