[WIP] The Catalyst (updated Oct/5/2024)

If you ever have pet goose or dove or maybe just monogamous bird you will notice when one of the pair died another will be almost suicidal, refuse to eat, refuse to sing, refuse to leave the dead alone.

I feel DC is like that, unfortunately there is nothing to be done here, when one of bird pair died 80-90% of the time the mate will die soon, unless pet owner intervene and force the bird to live like forcefully feeding them and put them in a cage so the bird won’t do something stupid.

That is so cruel, honestly, something out of a horror movie.
Forcing the bird to stay alive… I know owners love their pets and doesn’t want to let go, but if it’s the type of bird that gets really tortured and miserable and cannot move on (they’re not human, they’re not okay and will not be okay), I think it’s best to let it do what it wants to do :pensive:
Can’t imagine the pain for both the bird and the owner tbh

Anyways, I’m rambling and out of topic. But if it’s to be compared, I think DC is a little bit of the opposite of doves and pidgeons since instead of wanting to off himself he wants to off :sparkles: everyone :sparkles:

Ugh yeah this is tough question and there is no right answer because both way either let nature run it’s course or intervene both have correct justification.

The question that should be asked is which consequences pet owner is willing to bear?

Do pet owner willing to let go and lose another pet? or force the last pet to keep on living despite unhappy existence and literally living on life support?

Don’t mind me making my MC like Patroclus. Except for the dying part.

a mc who takes an “attack guard dog” role with DC only to realize their love still doesn’t outweigh DC’s for their deceased? wack grabs popcorn

Consider me officially obsessed for an MC that is a) jaded and just wanted to survive b) begrudgingly in love with T who was happy to die and leave them off to grieve c) unfortunately a good person so won’t put their own life above saving everybody else… ugh :face_with_peeking_eye:

Yep the DC is probably still grieving her spouse which is why they’re doing mass genocide to avenge them as well carrying out the dark prophecy. MC has tough competition winning over the widow…

Just read the demo and I’m absolutely in love with the story! Your idea is really interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing how everything is going to develop.

What I like most is the fact that MC is basically destined to die. And I’m definitely NOT willing to die for the sake of a prophecy - combined with the fact that S is a RO I’m pretty sure I’ll change to the dark side. ^^ Which is a real struggle because I usually like being morally good. XD

The silence spell is a wonderful twist and adds so much drama! And I really like the choices we are given. It’s fun being cynical / sceptical and a heathen!

Now to the characters (don’t mind me referring to everyone in the male form):

I picked a sibling relationship with T and love the dynamic. I’m glad we aren’t forced to share his feelings and it’s honestly so tragic falling victim because your best friend is in love with you!
He’s terribly naive, of course, put I like taking care of him and being a cynical counterweight. We kind of make for a good team: he can counterweight my selfishness. lol

C is very interesting! Especially the reveal in the end. Kind of reminds me of the problematic with mages and abominations in Dragon Age. Is he possessed? If you know DA, I’m kind of thinking of Anders right now. In addition I also really like his personality, so I definitely like him already!

Z seems like a dangerous fella and I’m curious to see whether his behavior will change during the story. He seems very distant, especially regarding his thoughts about people always breaking your heart etc. Intriguing! Let’s see if he’s going to open up a bit …

In general, all the RO’s are really promising and I might end up have difficulties with making the final decision. I love villain RO, so I’m all here for S, but C and Z also seem very interesting … so let’s see what kind of mess or love triangle I’m going to create by accident as the story progresses. ^^

Before I finish - I found two small mistakes:

  1. a little spelling mistake: »The Pay was high- one HUNDRED gold coins …« (missing letter in hundred)
  2. I chose to carry C on my back, but after setting everything on fire, I’m suddenly carrying him in my arms: »Dashing into the cavern with Cassius in your arms…«

Normally I don’t read stories with a word count under 100k, buuut, your plot intrigued me.

And I was not disappointed. The pacing is perfect, and even if the wordcount is not high yet, it seems much longer while not feeling rushed. What I hoped to get out of this story, I got. I love a story with awesome character development, and this has the potential for it. I hope to get more of that topic, also from the ROs. I loved the chess scene where my hopes of the plots direction were confirmed and the final dialogue made my skin crawl in anticipation.

Just please don’t punish the reader just for choosing the dark path (often it’s the insta loose path for morale punishment)

I don’t think so. DC became dark because their lover was killed by the light priests. If MC is killed by DC (who will not kill them actively, but by accident like throwing themselves in front of T) then T will be mad at DC not at the light. Or if they die because they sacrifice themself so that T can fulfill the prophecy, then I can not really see T turning.

I find the notion of. If you don’t go to die, then the world ends, definitely. Then isn’t that a chosen one scenario as well?

I’m curious if I can plummet the world into darkness now, by not dying, and making the chosen one fail. Have to be chosen one to allow chosen one to succeed by dying?

I may read this soon.

No it’s confirmed there’s a way to save the world without dying. There’s 3 paths, sacrificial lamb, darkness victory and resisting fate while saving the world.

Honestly I’m not sure I would call a self filling role like ours a prophecy that is supposedly fate since it’s actually that person’s choice at the end of the day.

Love is a double edged sword in a game like this. The fact that god forced the chosen one friend to be murdered/sacrificed could rub them the wrong way which in turn draw them away from the light. My main of the post before is the cycle of darkness will probably never end until the prophecy wasn’t fulfilled or the catalyst found a way to break it.

Just a heads-up:

The next update will probably come at the end of this month or the beginning of the next. It isn’t that long in terms of average read-through, but includes quite a lot of branches. They are a hell to wrangle- and part of the reason behind the radio silence. (The other part is me not feeling the “flow” of writing lol)

Thanks for your patience!

The update is here!

Part I of Chapter I is here. In this part, you mainly get to know your companions, and maybe take a deeper look at the prophecy. As I mentioned in the previous post, the update isn’t long (around 15k in total), but the branching has me stumped for quite a while. Hopefully it is bug-free; testing it is surely exhausting!

Cheers!

Playing through the new chapter makes me create a silly HC that Isferata has a penchant for recruiting women, just because I set DC as female and read the gist of Anna’s Folly.

I choose everyone female and only Tristan and DC is male to make this story as some sort of woman POV of otome game.

Aren’t most Otome games female PoV?

Just wondering if Tristan will make a move to others in our party.
