Yeah I don’t think you’ll be beating Surpass in a 1v1 without guts/strength, considering that’s her whole thing lol, but maybe there is another way to win a fight with her! My subterfuge/lnowledge MC with literally 0 guts ended at least moderately injured— and at most almost gravely wounded— in all of her fighting choices, sooo yeah. Surpass don’t play

I’m guessing I also need guts for the option to "look for an opening " since it’s greyed out regardless of how much juice I have left.

Yes! My MC wounded her, solo, and walked away with no wounds. I was actually so surprised lol. Guess that’s what happens when you put ALL of your stats into guts

I maybe didn’t communicate this as well as I could have within the text, but CG is ok with having the ‘so what was that with Phalanx’ conversation in front of Alistair because she assumes it’s something interpersonal rather than relating to the coven. Like bearing in mind Alistair starts the conversation, so it’s a reasonable thing to ask.

Summary
he best case outcomes for the Zone are A) managing to bust up her eye without getting hurt yourself and B) getting your bell rang, but she then gets called away.
A) is exclusively a high guts option (" I made myself stronger. I’m not who she fought before, and I’ll prove it."/“I’ll count on pure grit. Let’s go.”). If the first part of the fight didn’t go poorly, and your guts is high enough, you get this outcome. (otherwise you end up with the mutual injury or just being beat up)
B) is for fighting defensively in the second half of the fight.
The other outcomes are either mutually injuring each other or Surpass hurting you without damaging her eye.
It’s designed to be hard to actually ‘win’. Sort of ties into how Vantage is the only Hound Dime can definitively beat here. Portrait it’s a 2v1, Phalanx/Arcade/Enfilade, the DPR get in the way; Dime may have the upper hand, but I didn’t want them to just sweep through the entire team of heroes in the first full encounter.
However, with Surpass specifically, it links into wanting to make sure that every stat ‘main’ gets at least a couple of cool things throughout the story, hence this is a guts moment. You invested in the stat and your reward is bloodying the toughest nut to crack.
I mentioned elsewhere in the thread, but actually no, it’s not a guts thing.

Well, time to mutate some coping mechanisms. Maybe work it into the villain persona, I’m thinking I act like the tendrils have minds of their own and I talk aloud to them, really fuck with some people. Anybody else got ideas?
