[WIP] Chains of Destiny: Book One (~827k words) - Last update: 2026/05/31

Sorry, but I’m glad that you at least enjoyed the story.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Yeah, Nemio was never meant to be an RO for the reasons you mentioned and because, in some part, he’s still a slave to the things that formed him into this.

Still, there will be slow burns in the story - Elaine and Barnabas both offer that, though for very different reasons. Amir sits somewhere in between. So once all the ROs are introduced, maybe one of them will help your MC let go of Nemio.

Thank you . I wanted to build a relatively realistic world that is very similar but still different from our own while I fill it with all the stuff I think could be cool. It does not always work, but my aim is to improve while writing this story.

Well… all I can promise is that there will be a lot more depth with Nemio, and as the story progresses, the MC will be able to uncover more about him and about the rest of his old squad as Nemio learns to trust the MC more.

In this original discussion (and yes, we’ve had it seven or eight times by now) this was pretty much laid to rest on the basis of Nemio has known you since you were a child. He has watched you grow up. He’s known you since you were seven. Romancing him is creepy from your side, abusive from his. He’s not going to be an RO because Notlev doesn’t want to write that kind of story. Think about it in real life. It’d be like you, a 16 year old, deciding to date your second grade/year teacher. Would that go over well with you?

Because from experience, I can tell you that it doesn’t play out well in the real world. Where your relative dates and/or lives with the dentist who’s known her since she was eight. Makes everyone look askance. Wonder what they missed. Wonder if there’s things thier daughters didn’t tell them and still won’t talk about. Maybe there is. Maybe there isn’t. But the oddity of the relationship and the boundaries that it crossed make it something other than just a “sweet” romance or crush. Even if it’s not a case of grooming, or anything nefarious. And Notlev gets to put his foot down and say “no, I’m not going there” if he wants to.

Stop asking.

So, before this turns into a full-on argument or anything like that: I just want to say that I appreciate both of your responses. And no, neither of you has made me uncomfortable (it’s very, very hard to make me angry or frustrated so that is off the table too).

While I feel like it could’ve been worded better, Anne is right that this question has come up multiple times, and the answer has always been no. That’s not a decision I’ve made lightly. I’ve thought long and hard about it, and I’m still standing by it, not to hurt anyone or dismiss their opinions, but because I genuinely believe it’s what’s best for the story.

Why Nemio can’t love the MC is something Anne explained and something Nemio himself says in the story. But there’s also another reason, tied to the plot, that hasn’t been revealed yet. I could technically make him a romance option just to make people happy, but I truly think that would end up hurting the story in the long run. Nemio will always see the MC as the scared, angry, fragile child he first found in Eric’s tent. Even if all those memories faded somehow, he’d still say no because deep down, he doesn’t believe the MC truly loves him. And even if they do, Nemio wouldn’t accept it. He firmly believes that choosing to love him would only end in pain for the MC - maybe not in a day, a month, a year, but eventually. It’s something he’d never want to risk.

Also, I just want to be honest about where I’m at as a writer. This is my first story. And while I’m beyond grateful that you’ve made me feel like I’ve created at least something halfway decent, I’m still learning as I go. This might seem like a lazy excuse, but the story is already dense - it’s high fantasy with a big focus on worldbuilding but also on the human condition and trauma, which are themes close to my heart. There are six romance options already, and each of them needs proper depth, development, and some kind of satisfying emotional payoff. Adding a Nemio route would require reworking so much - emotionally, thematically, structurally - that, I feel, is just isn’t something I can to take on.

So I’m really sorry if that’s disappointing. I promise I’m not ignoring feedback. I read every message, every theory, every feeling you all share with me. And they matter. They push me to be better. But this is the one place where I do have to put my foot down. Nemio will never be a romance option. He’ll have a major role in the story, and the bond with the MC can grow into something strong and meaningful - but it will never be romantic. He cannot love the MC in that way, and he won’t accept their love either.

Thank you both for reading and following the story. I appreciate your words, your honesty, and the fact that you care enough to feel strongly about these characters. I just ask that we all try to be kind to each other. Both of you brought up thoughtful points, and I want this space to stay welcoming to all kinds of opinions and feelings. The story isn’t perfect, I’m not perfect (far from it), and feedback - positive or critical - is part of what helps me grow.

This post isn’t meant to attack anyone. I just want to make sure we’re all on the same page moving forward. Please stay civil with each other, even if you feel like you’re in the right.

Why is Julia blonde?

Though it’s never directly stated (I’ll have to add a choice about the MC’s grandmother to chapter 2, where the MC asks their father questions before the celebration), the MC’s grandmother had blonde hair just like Julia.

As a B-fanboy, I’m still eagerly awaiting his missing dialogue at the party. I love the new N crush option because like many, I am not immune to his charms despite the 20ish year age gap lol. I’m just hoping we get to be REALLY embarrassed by it later

What do you like about B? I’m trying to think out who I’ll pursue because I don’t really have many options. I really don’t like childhood friend tropes, but I also haven’t really interacted with Z at all so maybe I can hold my nose but I don’t think so. Not interested in women, so there’s three others wiped out right there. B did not make a good impression (I want to punch him more but not at all so I can kiss it better just…punch more.) And we haven’t met A, who I’m probably wrong about but feels like he may be some sort of trap…

Sorry but have to ask, where does chapter 2 end?

Are you doing a rewrite for chap 3 as well?

Hey, chapter 2 should end after the line “The Black Company will march south.” Chapter 3, part 1 is in production, so I’m not sure if it’ll need a rewrite but hopefully not.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I like him exactly because I want to punch him, or kiss him. I like the tension, and I like that I want to impress him, rather than the other way round. Or both ways round. Idk, I just like him. :man_shrugging: surprised me too lol.

If he was a woman I’d romance him, so I get it lol.

Noticed this when you go to look at the animals if you stay at the parade in the opening

Thank you! I’ve uploaded a fix so now it’ll show the correct pronoun.

Noticed these too, also during the parade.
Another thing I noticed is that Ling (the magic woman) refers to MC as “Little Lion”. Is it a normal nickname? I assumed it only was what MCs family and friends call them.

Thank you, I’ve uploaded corrected version.

There is a reason Ling chooses to use that nickname, and it’ll be explained later, but it just has to do with the MC’s family’s heraldry before the Rebellion.

Not yet at this part but does she call female MC Little Lioness? If not could it be implented?

@Notlev
Obsessively replaying made me notice I’m not getting juna relationship points as they are listed in the code. I believe the same thing has happened w stats previously?
Like i get no points for any of these choices:
