When In Rome (WIP)

@Scrivener: I have a wee bit of an obsession with that name myself. I suspect you’re going to like the characters in the scribe/scholar path, once I have that up and running…

@Carolyne promises promises… *shakes finger in general direction*

@Carolyne

I never understood why people have a problem with the use of a semicolon. It’s a semicolon, thus it’s essentially read in the same mannerism as a period and inflicts essentially the same meaning to the reading if I were to put a period. So why can’t I put a semicolon?

How do you meet Scaurus’ nephew?

@adjppm1227 A semi-colon is generally used for longer than a comma but shorter than a full stop (US English: period). Juss’ the way it is.

@Bagelthief

Really? I’ve always read: “He was tall; he was smart” in the same context as one reads: “He was tall. He was smart.” Oops, lol

I second @aetheria’s opinion on the ‘purple prose’ topic; I love your descriptive narrations and it really does fully immerse the ready in the story. I find that stories set in a different time or world definitely need the level of detail that you give to your writing as otherwise I wouldn’t be able to put myself properly into that world ^.^

I tend to switch back and forth from playing as Terentia Anthe and Laelia Secunda; I really like those names! :slight_smile:

@Dark_Bear2889 in the slave dealer path there is a part where you can choose to explore the house, you’ll meet Patulcius there!

@adjppm1227 @Bagelthief I learned the use of the semicolon from this comic on The Oatmeal http://theoatmeal.com/comics/semicolon, although it might not be entirely correct, but it seems to make the most sense! :slight_smile:

@aetheria: How about a few unnatural disasters? I have a webcomic where I’m merrily sending everyone to their doom, so my thirst for destruction won’t necessarily have to show up in this game :slight_smile:

Also, I’m pleased to have inspired a delurking :smiley: Thank you!

Aquillius/Aquillia gender: I hate it when I forget about the gender! I’ll run through the text tonight (but I’ve fixed who it is who’s besotted).

Technically, it’s correct to use the feminine when talking about a Roman family name, but it’s weird to see it in an English sentence. I can add in an extra variable for the family name to be consistent when it’s used like that but, yeah, can’t do that for the player-created names without going through so many gyrations my head might topple off.

@Dark_Bear2899: If you explore the house, you’ll stumble over Scaurus’ relative, but it’ll be a niece if you’re playing as a male character. Which I guess is kind of a giveaway as to how the game is trying to position certain characters whose gender is dependent only on the MC’s (rather than on MC preferences).

@adjppm1227, @Bagelthief: In my case, I really, truly, definitely was using way too many semicolons. All out of control; sentences that never ended.

@heyyoungblood: I love the subtitle, “The most feared punctuation on earth”!

I played Choice of Broadsides I believe exactly a gabillion times, and it began to feel like the names I chose had specific personalities–I might play several times with name X, but if I was going to play as a complete cad, I wouldn’t feel right unless I used name Y :slight_smile:

@Carolyne: I do the same with the Heroes Rise and Way Walkers series; sometimes it just doesn’t feel right going down a more sinister path with the character that has so far been on the good side…

@Carolyne: Just don’t kill off the faithful family dog again or I will be super sad.

It sounds kind of fun to code a thing to fake-decline any random name, but as far as I know it would be impossible in Choicescript aside from hacking the source. Oh well.

@heyyoungblood the Oatmeal is beyond funny

@heyyoungblood and @Carolyn Thanks!

@aetheria: ALL the faithful dogs in my stories get a ticket for the first boat out of town :smiley:

The “______ family” should now show up as the same whether the MC is male or female, unless it’s a player-created name. If you put a semicolon in your name, you’re on your own.

Is there something you have to do to get the option to explore the slave dealer’s house? I tried a bunch of times but never got the option

@Dark_Bear2899: Once you’re living in the slave dealer’s house–working as a bookkeeper, an overseer, or an auctioneer–there should be no way NOT to get the option to explore the house, unless you get caught stealing.

Does Scaurus: 1) offer to give you a second slave, and 2) offer to let you work with the old bookkeeper? Do you get a chance to try to steal a little?

If none of those things happens, please let me know!

ETA: To get a job with the slave dealer you can 1) meet him at Metellus’s party on your first night in Rome (don’t scare him off!); 2) try living at the brothel for a while but go with him when he offers you a different job; 3) try being a tutor for a while, but get fired or quit.

I am offered to “sample the stock”(i politely refuse), and work with the book keeper, I get a chance to steal (which I don’t), then it goes right to blackmailing Aquillius. It then tells me of his plot and I choose if I want to help him or not. Then the it’s end if I say yes

@Dark_Bear2899: I must have accidentally cut off the path. I’ve moved tonight’s update over to the live server. Please try reloading the game now and give it a go! We can both try testing it at the same time :slight_smile:

It works!!! :smiley: thank you!

Is this game gender locked??

Sorry about the double post- I thought the game was gender locked, so I thought I would not like it, but I played it anyway and ended up liking it anyway- just wanted to say great game =D>
