How to impress Harpax ? He just rejected me over and over again…
@Dark_Bear2899: Whether or not Merula sends Harpax to you depends on your past actions. I’ve temporarily set it so that Merula always offers you a chance to meet him.
@Ventura: You have to get to the (partially skipped-over) rooftop scene, which happens if you insult someone at the first party.
@Yugen: Play to your strengths with him. I’m trying a tweak that more heavily rewards that. If you don’t have a sharp mind, avoid discussing politics, etc. He likes confidence, so it’s a disadvantage to keep trying everything to see what sticks.
I have to admit I’m liking Harpax a lot. Maybe more than Hedylus?
Found an error line 521: Non-existent variable cheating
@attolia: I’m having fun writing this extra detour for Harpax. On the other hand, you never know when someone who isn’t squeamish about violence and is also a good liar–I mean, actor–will come in handy as a friend.
As a heads up: Noon update has been added, and I’m going to update the files again at 3pm (Eastern), so if anything suddenly goes wonky in the middle of a game, please try reloading to reset the variables. The update is mostly to the poets and prostitutes, a little refinement to the tutor, and I didn’t get the scribe and scholar path finished in time for today (sorry, @Scrivener
I’ll aim for a midnight upload).
I’m still aiming to have the game playable all the way to the end by mid-March
Aww its okay @Carolyne. My focus shall be shifted for now as my other favorite path be updated. And I had a bug when I was playing on the tutor path. I was sleeping with my employers son and we got caught. Picked the option to say we were in love and it didn’t let me continue.
@Scrivener: Ow–I’ll have a look at the code before I update any more files today. Can you tell me anything else about the bug (error message), or it just stopped there, or…?
Line 521: non-existent variable ‘cheating’
Found this when telling your patron that you and His son are in love (tutor)
Edit: Oops sorry, guess I’m late
Will the choice between the two slaves be significant?
@Dark_Bear2899: It affects hidden stats and how people treat you. It’ll have more significance in the beta version.
@Dark_Bear2899: It just occurred to me that I completely misunderstood your question. I think you meant the choice between Pavo and Heron, and I was answering about something later in the game. Yes, the choice has effects throughout the story. They observe different things (to report back to you) and react in different ways; one is more likely to fight than the other; one is more street smart; etc.
@Carolyne
Enjoying your game immensely! Great writing and character development. You have talent and I look forward to more.
* “What’s on the chain?” the ringleader demands. His breath puffs rankly across your skin. “Hand it over.” The point of his rusty knife pokes the underside of your chin. to women (* something odd there)
* Brought into slave dealers room after given option to skim or not.
Line 815 reaction 2 non existent variable
* Fatal mistake was questioning slave dealers treatment of the slaves.
Line 72 slaves relationship non existent variable
* You reluctantly wait your turn outside Metellus’s receiving room to tell him you’ll be leaving his service. Heron name (* something odd there) stands at your side, looking as apprehensive as you feel.
Argh - Curse of the mobile phone multiple posts!
*Shakes fist at*
@piggleywinks: Thank you for the nice comments, and thank you for reporting the bugs/typos. I’m sorry you bumped over so many! I could see what was happening on each of those, and these should all be fixed.
ETA: It took me a little while longer to track down and stomp on the “Fatal mistake was…” error. That came from a copy-paste error. Ugh.
@Carolyne whenever I go the blackmailing of the kept person path it keeps switching the gender of Aquillius. First they’re male in one sentence then female in another. It keeps doing that back and forth until you leave with the money.
@Scrivener: criminey. that’s just awful. I’m putting a moratorium on updates until I’ve scoured this entire thing. I think I broke something when I changed how I’m handling the variables. Going to go look at that right now.
@Scrivener: I’ve run all the text from the two blackmailing scenes and fixed some pronouns and ambiguous sentences. I’ll keep testing. Thank you for the bug report. I’ll hope any other glitches are few and far between (until I likely smash everything in the beta version…).
