Most people here are going to disagree but i will say an overpowered protagonist is a criminally underused trope , i know what you are thinking that there are many op mcs out there but for me only games like aether life of a god and few others truly gives you the pleasure of playing an all powerful character.
Pass. There is some appeal to being “all powerful” but I can get that appeal from pretty much everywhere. I don’t feel like it’s missing from CoG products, and if it was, I’d just consider that a nice break from all the power fantasy video games offer me all the time.
But speaking of power, I kinda wish there were more “unequal pairing” romances out there. They seem to be pretty rare (not counting WIPs that never got updated) and I genuinely struggle to recall any cases where the power imbalance actually impacted the dynamic, rather than being swept under the rug or not even noticed by the narrative. I’m very much a pot insulting a kettle here, I haven’t really written any of those myself, but I might do so once I’m done with my current project.
Someone who seems extremely emotional and bubbly, able to emphasize really well, super kind and sweet—but in reality struggle a lot with the above-mentioned traits, and they try to mirror what they see. So when someone develops a deep relatiinship them, they will see who is the opposite of what they knew. It’s kinda eerie, scary, and strange for the other person.
So, uhm, more angst and complex relationships and characters that make me want to bash my head into the wall.
Cause this recently came to mind, but what about giving the player the choice to be a jerk? Like, we be the cold hearted bastard no one likes
(This might exist already, Meow not sure…)
The power to copy your self/clone powers ice powers energy powers shapeshifter necromancy
Yknow playing as the narrator has a strange bent, imagine the perspective tone of your own elder self telling the tale of how you become them over the ages.
Holy shit you’re alive?
Apart from some personal tragedies and melt downs yes I live
I’m trying my damndest to not ask the obvious
I’d totally be down for playing the narrator. Imagine just going “What.” when describing what’s happening.
Imagine a kinda slow hinting toward the reader within the story only toward the end do you get the big tadaa, of DAMN that’s me!
If its the question of my WIP, its likely a rewrite and reformat than a continuation, if I can get up to speed again.
I wouldn’t mind it being someone else, either.
I know my thoughts (and tastes) are kind of strange, but I think some under-used ideas that could be pretty interesting (just because you don’t see them much, if at all, might be like:)
~ The main character genuinely being an eldritch abomination. Thought patterns that make normal human (or whatever race) characters go “Hmm… I just don’t get it.” or some such. A horrifying, unrepentant, genuinely sadistic and evil being of alien geometry that it can make other people go “If someone is so far removed from human thought and morals, are they truly evil?” Despite the main character being downright, horrifically evil. (I have a thing for well-written villains-- and Lovecraft-inspired eldritch nightmares.)
~ Somewhat in the same vein, a main character inspired loosely by both Kefka Palazzo and Revolver Ocelot (when the latter was young and interesting.) Unapologetically evil, extremely intelligent and deadly, arrogant, egotistical, flamboyant, rude, betraying others when it suits their needs, ruthless, sadistic, scheming, manipulating, dishonest, but friendly, playful and pants-shittingly mad enough that nothing they say or do is an empty threat.
~ I also like the idea (in a fantasy setting) of having the MC being a poisoner (perhaps a courtly one) and one of the ROs being a torturer (probably working for the same court.) There’s something about such a pairing in a traditional fantasy “court of debauchery” setting that I find very appealing.
~ There are a lot of games (not just IFs,but games) where roguish characters are present. Rather than having the MC be some sort of “noble” Robin Hood-style thief or “assassin with morals,” why not have the MC be a genuine rogue (Enough with the Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral at best rogues!) who is greedy, selfish, out for themselves, vain and having many vices? (Drinking and gambling are not vices, not really.)
~ In the same vein of the MC being a true rogue, why not something else you don’t really see-- they could start as a bandit/brigand who is just trying to do what they do every night (try to take over the world!) make a quick buck by attacking travelers. They’ve got room for character growth and development, but they aren’t interested in changing everything about themselves. Maybe starting an IF where said bandit/brigand is captured by guards/mercs/whatever and has to figure out how to escape from prison/the dungeon before they’re hung?
I could keep throwing non-heroic, character ideas out there, but that’s probably not what a lot of people want to read, espeically since this post could end up getting very long. XD
What about races? We see humans, elves and fey creatures a lot. There are many fantasy races that I haven’t seen used all that often, that could possibly make for some interesting MC racial possibilities:
Gorgons (not the bull, the Greek snake-haired, clawed, poisonous people who could turn others to stone with a glance), harpies, half-orcs (I think I’ve seen orcs/half-orcs maybe three or four times, maximum?) Dwarves, dryads, alraune, nagas, gnomes, Drow! (Don’t get me wrong, your average elves are great, but I’ve got a soft spot for Drow!) Driders, mephits, rakshasha, even the many kinds of Djinni (ifriti, shaitan, marid, et cetera) could be pretty interesting to see every now and again, I think. ^.^
Horror is also pretty under-done, I think. (Not supernatural horror, that gets pretty old-- definitely no more zombies, werewolves, or vampires.) Slashers, well-done psychological horror, serial killers, eldritch horror, kidnapping/abductions (that aren’t mystery, but horror/crime-based) could be pretty fun.
A prophecy gone wrong could be prettty interesting, I think. Rather than being another trope-ified “chosen one” intended to save the world, what if the MC was the chosen one-- cursed by whatever pantheon to bring about Ragnarok/whatever apocalypse?
Instead of being able to romance a crime lord (in any setting) why not have the MC take the role of being the leader of a crime syndicate?
I also think something truly apocalyptic (Think inspired roughly by Wastelands, Fountain of Dreams, Meantime, Fallout 1 or Fallout 2) could be a hell of a lot of fun!
So could a truly dystopian setting (use 1984 as a reference for that X3) or even Kafka-esque would be pretty interesting and entertaining.
I saw a post about villain romances and it inspired me to post here…
I’d love to see more “villain romances” in which the PC is on an equal footing with the villainous character. Being able to be partners in crime doing ethically dubious things together, and have proper conversations with each other rather than a sort of… “oh no I’m drawn into their all-powerful web and it’s hot” feeling. (Not referring to any story in particular, just the sense I get from reading about various “dark fantasy romance” books.)
That second part reminds of Manerkol from The Soul Stone War lol.
But yeah, I agree. It’d be nice to have a romance where you’re both just ‘freaks’
I haven’t played that route from Soul Stone War so I don’t know what it’s like - I can see the appeal of that vibe but I don’t hear about more equal-partners dynamic so often. (The couple that villains together stays together…?)
Sounds fun, a ‘bad-romance’ of sorts. A way to create a ‘villain-romance’ is a shared tragedy though. Villains don’t think they’re the bad guy and the best ones have a good argument taken too far.
I wouldn’t count on it hides plot notes
I actually had this idea of a romance game where everyone is a supervillain, once, but at the current stage, I wouldn’t be able to pull it off. Maybe some day!
 Maybe some day!
Ah, and one more thing, though this is not so much character trope rather a game mechanic:
I would love to see more games where flirting with other characters is brought up. The only examples I can think of are wips which are Infamous and Replica: Between Universes (both are amazing games which I highly recc checking out).
Since I’m indecisive and all, I like flirting with all the ROs so it’s interesting when a game points that out.
For Infamous
I chose to have an obvious crush on Orion, while simultaneously flirting with pretty much everyone else lol. And I love the lil snippets of like how O asks about me and August’s ‘situation’ so to speak or how our bandmates teases about O’s reaction when we flirt with August
As for Replica
I’m honestly still rather unsure who I should go with, but I love the one part where if we leave with Ash or Hal, and we’ve romanced either one alongside Fin, our sister teases him which also varies based on whether we have a higher romance with F or A/ H.
Another part, is when we ask Amethyst about the rest and their answers are very enlightening to say the least
Honestly, it’s such a fun and immersive aspect imo
I like Villain to Hero troupe. It isn’t used much neither discusses much. The main job of player is to control and change storyline. Very often we get set as a good guy doing good things or opposite. But very rarely we get to make a broken hero or villain a true hero or savior.
This and I like Enemies to Lovers troupes very much.
