I just have one big writing goal for 2019:

  • Submit The Narcissistic Necromancer to HG: So far I’ve written about 53/250k words for this WIP, so I think it’s a pretty attainable goal!

How are people’s writing goals going now we’re almost at the end of April? I can’t believe we’re a third of the way through 2019!

I’m now two chapters away from a full first draft. It’s turning into a behemoth, but I love the setting and characters, and the plot is unfolding in mysterious and exciting ways.

I’m a third of the way through this now. Hurrah!

I’m in the process of building this. Still hyped. Absolutely going to end up creeping myself out with the horror elements.

:eyes: watch this space…

:eyes: O, the ideas I have! Going to be working on those pitches once Crème de la Crème is in the bag.

Seven rejections, nine acceptances, one in limbo. Really glad to be pushing myself to apply to lots of things!

Finally start writing I guess :joy: it’s literally a work in progress to get myself writing

Honestly, I feel like my writing year is just beginning, so in a way it’s appropriate for me to do this now. I’m trying to be realistic with my goals, given health matters and some other family concerns. Sometimes I get side-eye for my unambitious (comparatively) goals, but I trust that won’t happen here.

1. Finish chapter 2 of Turncoat Chronicle.

I’m talking finish-finish, beta’d and polished and up to par.

2. Start the beta process for chapter 3 of Turncoat Chronicle.

I’m not sure I’ll be able to finish the game this year, but this goal seems totally attainable, if I crack down on my schedule and balance everything correctly.

3. Complete the first draft of act 1 of my novel.

Working on the novel is much slower, but very gratifying when it goes well. I ran into some plot snags late last year, but I’m just about ready to go from outlining and patching back to writing new scenes.

4. Submit at least three new short works for publication.

In magazines or anthologies. I published two short stories in 2018. I can’t control whether I’ll get published again in 2019, but I can tip the odds in my favor by submitting vigorously, and by producing new work that reflects my evolving skillset.

5. Start work on my next CSG after Turncoat.

I’m positively abuzz with ideas. I constantly complain about it on the fan Discord channel. The trick is to identify the one that’s ripe for development and then take the outline to the next stage. Time to implement everything that I learned from making Turncoat.

6. Attend worldcon 2019!

I’d say this one is in the bag, but I don’t want to jinx it.

i have no idea

I really want to get a WIP posted. I’m working very hard to get my outline finished and had some major breakthroughs today. This is my first time writing IF and I have to admit… It’s more work than I originally imagined. Not that I expected it to be easy.

I’m co-writing a second project (a script) and hope to limit myself to just these two things. Otherwise, I’m spread too thin and finish nothing.

Just want to finish. If it’s bad, I’ll start over and keep writing until I write something that isn’t.

It’s encouraging to see so many of you making progress regardless of what life throws at you!

A while ago I posted that my one writing goal this year is to submit my game to HG before 2020. However, I’ve been making lots of progress and I’ve had more ambition than I thought. So, here’s my updated goal:

  • Submit Nascent Narcissistic Necromancer to Hosted Games before September.

I’m hoping to get a WIP posted this year for my current CS project “Vigilante.”

It’s slow going because I have a lot of other things on my plate as well. I find it hard to concentrate under pressure so I’m not going to set a target that I might get frustrated with (!)

Sorry I’m a bit late.
My writing goals are:

  1. Start writing my thesis

  2. Working on my traditional writing project, a fantasy novel, so far I wrote wordbuilding, characterization of some major characters, a summary of the story and part (a third?) of the first chapter. I hope to write at list a few chapters before the end of the year.

  3. Maybe I will try sketching a CYOA wip and see if anyone is interested

How did everyone do on your 2019 goals?

Done!!

Hahaha yeah no. I’m 40% of the way through.

Completed, not yet released. (But if you’re interested in what it is, it’s for Fallen London )

Done!

Not done, but I hope to send something in the new year. I have some kickass ideas and I’d love for them to see the light of day.

I picked up 10 rejections and 12 acceptances. As a friend said, in terms of my goal it’s a hard fail. In terms of my aims, a solid success!

Well, the year and the decade are in their last hours, so while I’m thinking about my goals for 2020, let’s see how my stunted writing half-year did:

So, fun fact about chapter 2, is, I had to split it in two. Technically, that means I accomplished this goal and the next one. Substantively, it just means that I have a four-chapter game, and I’m not yet two-thirds of the way done with it.

My summer did not go as planned, in many ways. The final chapter of TC might be gaining ground in structure and prose, but it won’t be ready for beta testing for… a while.

Novel is stalled. The outline is no longer sufficient. It needs to be completely re-outlined and redrafted, from scratch. Long sigh.

Two submissions (one for an existing story, one new one) and two rejections. I also started the process of redrafting an old short story that hadn’t done too well in the submission grind.

I did do this, and I made some real progress. I have a first chapter mostly complete, and a preliminary three-act timeline. I need to finish the first chapter and expand the timeline to a real outline before I’m ready to let it see the light of day.

See, this one went well. I’m glad I went, although big international cons are grueling and I was exhausted when I got home – too tired to write a blog post summing up my experiences, unfortunately. I did leave with my eye on future WorldCon locations, wondering if and when I could potentially attend again. Whether I pursue that depends on… a lot of factors.

So! Not all of this came to pass. But I still feel fairly accomplished. TPS was indeed both finished and published in 2019, and while it took three months longer than anticipated, it was also much longer than I originally anticipated, so there’s that.

I did not de-choice NPT. Still not sure the interest is there, or if self-publishing a novel would do much more than stroke my vanity a bit.

I did not complete another CS game. Heck, I only barely started one. Part of that was taking time off that stretched longer than intended, and the other part was struggling with my third story, which proves to really test my limits in a lot of ways. But I also decided I don’t really want to turn this into some kind of a grind. Sure, if I did it the way I mentioned here I’d eventually have quite a catalog. But it would also be stressful to maintain that kind of output. I’d rather do it at my pace, enjoy myself, and not get to where I stress out myself and others in the process of creating.

And while no kid books were published, I did write two more, and they’re probably better than the others I had done before. Who knows what might happen with them?

Ahhh… We’re going to talk about that?

Well I got one major WIP done and published. (Wanted to get a second done by the end of this year but RL gets in the way of my writing efforts at times :stuck_out_tongue: )

Wanted to enter IFComp this year and managed to get that in. (Thanks again everyone for the last min beta testing effort so I could get it in on time!) And decided to keep going with Ectocomp because why not?

Got a couple of mini projects done as well. So could’ve been better, could’ve been worse. At least I finished something this year :upside_down_face:

They didn’t die down far enough. Still trying to finish Ch 1. But onward and upward!

Well, failed on both counts. But to be fair, Retribution is getting bigger than I planned…
