Weeping Gods (WIP, 06/JUN/2025) (686K)

See when i read it my mind immediately jumped to “oh a bright flash of what seems like thunder and lightning, i know a certain spirit who can do that, and was apparently there to witness the whole thing. who would be more likely to blast someone with magic, an illiterate thief who doesn’t know a thing about magic, or a spooky (but hot) lightning spirit?”

so personally i have a small theory that they were set up

Okay, so @jcollins set me onto a path that made me (and the dev) realize that the problem revolves around attempting to hold the player’s place in the game.

As long as the browser stayed open and didn’t refresh (apparently, some browsers auto-refresh pages, and that was causing problems as well), then it worked fine. As soon as you closed the browser or the page refreshed, everything got hosed because all of the info in startup.txt (i.e., variables and achievements) were lost. Basically the game was attempting to continue while not knowing wtf it was working with.

I attempted setting up a mygame.js file, containing all of the necessary game info that is stored in startup.txt, in hopes that would solve the issue. The dev was convinced it would work, since that’s what the published game uses in lieu of startup.txt (mygame.js is actually generated based on startup.txt), but I couldn’t get it to work.

So, in the meantime, to try to remedy this problem, he has removed the ability to “pick up” where you left off in the game. If you close your browser, or the screen refreshes, you’ll be put back at the beginning of the game. However…

You can use your saves to get closer to where you left off. Now that we have the local save options working, you can save scum to your heart’s content. I recommend you do it often.

One caveat… when you go to play again, you will continue to get the achievement error until you delete all the data for your game and clear your cache/cookies for cogdemos.ink. I tested it and tried to get it to work without doing that, but kept getting the error until I deleted all my saves and cleared my cache. Once I did that, I restarted the game (at the screen where the error popped up), and was able to play without issue, even after closing the browser and loading my last local save.

I apologize for the aggravation with all of this, but I don’t see any other way to deal with the errors or get the game to pick up after being closed and still load startup.txt. At least now you won’t get bombarded with the errors. Just make sure to save.

Does anybody know what ages the RO’s won’t romance?

Narmer and Qenna can’t romance an MC in their late teens. Ahmose can’t be romanced by an MC who’s 30+ years old. I hope i did remember correctly!

Pause. You’re saying the thief expects this threat and believes it. Ok, I can get that. But how would they not feel threatened/ know they are safe if they know the threat is real?? “They know they’re not in a bad place because they know what this entails (i.e. torture and murder of loved ones if betray)” makes no sense. “They know they’re not in a bad place because they can trust the pharoh not to do that unless they actively betray them, and they know they are guaranteed not to be wrongfully accused of betrayal, or any other sort that is not their intent such as plain failure” would be the only case that this makes sense, and “your grandpa worked with them and you’re not dead” does not incite this trust in them.

You can do whatever you want with your IF. I’m just pointing out your read on the MC and the reasoning you gave for it makes no sense.

Now that’s an interesting take :face_with_hand_over_mouth: If you chose to take the magic tablet thingy, Petmes in CH3 will tell you more about it. I was actually thinking for Zaia to explain it but the scene just didn’t really seem to fit anywhere. Plus, reading your theory now, it might be more convincing if the explanation comes from a neutral third-party :joy:

I played all Origins and personally rank them as followed:

1.Noble: The viziers second daughter is my absolute favorite and I will play the game with my noble babygirl first. She was once married but lost her stupid husband (sniff). She sees herself as worthless but still wants to be loved and appreciated. She even planned to sacrifice herself for her sister. Thats how selfless and kind she is. She is in for a big adventure of self discovery and love.

  1. Priestess: My Priestess managed to save her apprentice and is on a journey of vengeance. She wants to make the people responsible for alsmost killing her baby apprentice suffer and die a most excruciating death. Don’t touch my babies!

  2. Thief: My Little gremlin thief is extra small cause he doesn’t eat well. He loves stealing and while escaping prison he commited a little self defense. He is pretty much fucked and was forced on the trip with the Pharao.

4: Captain: Captain just wants to eat his pie in peace.

I LOVE how everyone who read the captain’s route is like “that captain bro needs a pie ASAP” and you know what, I agree with you. Nothing would make them happier than a day off and a pie. Saving Egypt? Only if they get a pie afterwards.

New update

Chapter 3 is live on the Weeping Gods public demo!

What’s new:

  • 73 000 words added to the demo and the entire Chapter 3 is playable
  • A quick character creator option was added so you can skip the first 2 chapters
  • You can finally meet the last RO, Ahmose, properly
  • You will also meet the creator of the crystals
  • You can investigate the theft, succeed or fail, it’s up to your choices
  • You can discover some secrets about the ROs, and see a very different side to some of them
  • Get a new weapon (to borrow! lol)

Old saves don’t work. You have to start new ones. Additionally, if you run into an “achievement not declared” or “non-existent variable” error, save the game, restart, and reload. You should also delete the cogdemos website’s cookies from your browser.

This is also a good opportunity to remind everyone to READ THE CONTENT WARNINGS AGAIN. There are new ones in the list that will be present in Chapter 3. If you are sensitive to any of the issues present, stop reading the game.

Good reading!

Delete the cogdemos website’s cookies from your browser. This was a technical issue of the website that was solved recently and I can’t do anything about it.
