Hi!

I’ve got a little poll up on my Tumblr about Pfeifer’s offer and how many of you actually went for it on your main playthrough. If you want to vote, here’s the link

Hi!

Early Access to CHAPTER 2 (Part 1) is now available on my Patreon.

It adds 51K words (48K excluding code), bringing the game to 94K words total (88K excluding code).

Chapter 2 is mostly slice-of-life, with Callow trying to settle into their new environment and find their place among the roommates.

Just don’t get too cozy…

Hi, I updated Chapter 1 to implement the changes I mentioned on Tumblr.

CHANGES TO CHAPTER 1

Progressing forward, I found myself in a difficult spot. I realized that one of the choices I gave you shouldn’t actually be a choice at all. Making it optional dilutes the story.

I made that thing optional because I was worried about the balance between characters. It was a conceptual mistake, and removing the choice will probably make all the characters stronger, as well as making the conflict thicker and much more substantial.

Callow is not a self-insert character. I want you to have fun playing them, but not necessarily in a way that’s safe, because they’re fully shapable. I want to put more emphasis on your reactions to what you’ve done or what has happened to you than on diluting events just for the sake of player agency. I think this kind of story benefits from friction, discovery, and different ways of accepting or rejecting what happened, rather than from choosing a fully shapable “best” path.

So, if it’s still not clear, I’m talking about Callow’s romantic past with Jace. It was optional until now; it won’t be from now on.

I’d rather focus on building a satisfying system where Callow can shape their relationships with Karla and Camron and react to what happened to them and to who they are NOW, so by the time their past catches up with them, they already feel like your Callow.

As for Jace’s gender, they will be set to male and female for gay and lesbian MCs respectively, and I’m thinking of making them mandatory male for bi male MCs and mandatory female for bi female MCs. It kind of makes sense with what we know about Callow before the disappearance, but I get that it might not be ideal for those of you who would like Jace to have a specific gender.

So… for now, I’ll leave their gender selectable for bi Callows and give myself some time to think about it until the public update for Chapter 2.

Honestly this is one of the best decisions you’ve made for your IF. While i love player agency and is one of the main selling points for an IFs. Most PCs in choice of games are less of a character and more of a vessel for the player.

Thank you! That’s pretty much exactly what I was thinking. I love player agency too, but with Callow the choices are more about deciding who they become now rather than rewriting everything they used to be.
