I too crave an update, one can only watch Goodfellas and The Godfather trilogy for so long to quell the urge for mob fiction.

I’d also highly recommend “Once upon a time in America” (1984) with Robert De Niro and James Woods, directed by Sergio Leone. Some critics think it’s too long but I was glued to the screen all the way through and it seems to just get better and better each time I watch it. Superb depiction of the prohibition era, IMO–certainly more so than most movies set in those times.

The update might be a little late but I’ll do my best–wouldn’t want to spoil Lawrence’s birthday if I can help it! If it doesn’t look possible to finish the entire Chapter in time it might be possible to upload at least the working / vaguely tested scenes and upload the rest sometime over the following week.

Problem is, I’ve been somewhat distracted over the past 2-3 days. I’m still under contract on my last system design and when they need something reworking (as they did this week, to better suit some fundamental changes they’ve been making–against my advice, I might add!) I have to drop everything else and oblige. It’s a pain in the posterior, tbh, but it’s my bread & butter.

Don’t rush yourself just to please us, you gotta do what you gotta do. That being said, I am prone to badgering for updates, so please disregard said badgering when I fall into it.

Ooh, this one looks like fun! I love gangster movies, so this seems like something that’s right up my street.

Like 13ventrm said, don’t rush yourself. Good things come to those who wait, and good things generally require love and care.

Just checked out Chapter 1. Lovin’ it. You’ve clearly put a lot of time and effort into this, keep up the good work!

Thanks guys. I may just have to take your advice and postpone this update a little while longer (sorry everyone). I’ve been really pushing it this weekend to try to make up for the lost time last week, but when I read back over some of it, I’m afraid I become my own worst critic. I’m just not very happy with what is still too much of a rough draft for my liking. As my grandmother used to say: “If a thing is worth doing, it’s worth doing right.”

@LawrenceJWatson I hope you still had a great birthday though!

@Vendetta Thank you my friend. It was a good one. I still look forward to the next update

I’m sorry to be eager and I know its bad and selfish. but can we please have a resiment on chapter two it just killing me not knowing if it will be in a hour or a month again sorry.

After five days overdue, it’s a fair question.

I’ve not managed to do quite as much of Chapter Two this week as I would’ve liked as I got side-tracked doing the scripting for longer-term stuff like vendettas against your character, ‘Heat’-related topics for the stats screen (such as your Crime Commission ranking–you too can now be ‘Public Enemy Number One’ . . . if you’re not careful, hehe) and then going through Chapter Two again to infest it with some random-scene-selection script I’ve been working on for the past two weeks, just for more variety each time you play (so more scenes appear in a different order each time). Unfortunately the latter needed lots of testing & tweaking, but I’ve got the system working now ready for all future Chapters, so Chapter Two will be the big test to see what you guys think. . .

Oh, and I also added another few more possible options to the Weekly Events thing, to more than 30 now, pushing that section up to something like 1,500 lines of very complicated (for me, anyway!) scripting. Especially the weekly income calculation / game economics–that was a serious headache as there are so many different factors / different forms of income now . . . but you’ll see what I mean when you get to play through Chapter Two a few times with different backgrounds, etc.

All of this amounts to great progress for the game as a whole, but didn’t bring me a whole lot nearer to finishing a ‘polished’ Chapter Two. I just got a lot of things out of the way to make development easier in future so I can focus on writing the actual story.

All that said, I’ve put aside this entire weekend to work on finishing / polishing / final testing on Chapter Two itself, which will use all of these cool features (varying economics, random scene selection, large variety of weekly ‘free time’ options, etc.) and I will be aiming for an update by Sunday evening . . . fingers crossed.

Oh wow, you must be swamped in coding. I wish you luck in this endeavor and am enthusiastically waiting for an update.

On an unrelated note, that movie you recommended to me is currently in my DVD queue, especially since I’m rather fond of Sergio Leone.

UPDATE

Sincere apologies to everyone for the delay . . . I’m delighted to announce Chapter Two has been updated and is now available online:

http://vendetta1.webs.com

There have also been some changes and new scene additions to Chapter One, although nothing particular major. I’m quite partial to Cap’n Jack though . . . but you can find him for yourself.

I’ve some minor scenes still left to include in Chapter Two over the next week or so, to finish off the full demo, mostly some character relationships and background-specific stuff I want to include at this stage in the story, but all the main story scenes are now complete and (to the best of my knowledge, anyway!) should be mostly bug-free . . . Please let me know if you encounter any bugs.

Of particular note, somewhere (it varies each time!) in Chapter Two you will encounter the other two main storylines (either Mangano, Chuck or Dino, depending which way you went / which one you chose in Chapter One) as during Chapter Two you are involved with all three, so that by the end of that Chapter / end of the demo, you are in a position to choose which way to go in future.

However, in two cases I’ve re-used the introductory scenes from Chapter One (Chuck and Dino), but only if you didn’t encounter those in that Chapter. Although no scene is actually repeated within a single play-through, it is still my intention to have completely new introductory scenes for those two routes in Chapter Two (as there already is for Mangano), just to be entirely different to Chapter One–it’s just a case of getting around to it. It’ll probably be the final change made for completion of the full demo, however.

As always, comment, suggestions and advice would be very much appreciated–especially as regards the Weekly Accounting & Events side of things, and the semi-random order in which you encounter scenes during Chapter Two.

One thing I found odd is how with the Black Hand member background no one seems to suspect that you could be involved in the bombing, and the family seems perfectly peachy with you buying their store. Also how Dino refers to you as “boss” after the apparent bloodbath at the department store raid, despite me not taking leadership or participating in that raid, and how I had the option of sticking with Chuck despite never having met him.

But besides that, you have a magnificent way of making the setting come to life in an interesting way, like the description of the gang of kids stealing from the hawker and such. The sheer amount of weekly options was absolutely capital, and I enjoy owning as many businesses and rackets as I possibly can.

Will give more thorough review once I get two or three more playthroughs in.

Absolutely fantastic. The writing continues to be top notch in this chapter, and I can’t wait to see more.

I do have one small suggestion, though I don’t know how feasible it is from a coding standpoint. Feel free to ignore it if it isn’t practical. But it seems like Chapter Two has many, many more opportunities for death than Chapter One. Maybe that’s just the way I’ve been playing it, but I’ve died in most of my Chapter Two playthroughs thus far. So I find myself replaying through Chapter One again and making the exact same choices to get to Chapter Two and try it differently. Would it be possible to do some sort of ‘save’ or ‘password’ system at the end of each chapter, so you don’t have to start all over from the beginning if you die towards the end?

That was great fun! I didn’t actually die once, so I guess I’ve been lucky. I’ve been playing the Businessman and Union Organizer tiers and I find that it is such an engrossing story, I never seem to want it to come to an end. It was a chapter that was well worth the wait. I am excited for chapter 3 already, but I’ll be playing chapter 2 through a few more times and it’s certainly enough to keep me occupied until chapter 3!

@13ventrm Excellent feedback, thanks. Please keep it coming as these ‘odd’ bits you spot so easily as the player are precisely the ones least obvious to me, being so closely wrapped up in it all. I’m especially concerned by you not having met Chuck at all though–that should be unavoidable (for precisely that final-scene choice) so there’s definitely a bug there somewhere . . . If you manage to repeat that please let me know, in brief, which scenes you can remember actually seeing.

@Luxtizer. Appreciated, thanks. It’s a good suggestion and I must admit, this chapter was intended to be something of a wild ride and there are certainly many ways to fail, so your proposal does have a definite appeal. I’ll certainly give it some thought as to how it might be achieved.

@LawrenceJWatson Glad you enjoyed it. Please let me know if you spot anything ‘not quite right’, no matter how minor it might seem. Thanks.

This continues to be excellent fun - very well written and with some really nice options. I’m not sure if it’s me or the unfinished state of chapter 2, but sometimes the events that occurred in C2 didn’t really match my choices i.e. I wanted to investigate Gina’s murder one week, but ended up investigating the black hand bombing of the fishmongers (if there was a connection, I didn’t get it?). Also, I chose one week to strengthen my political/law connections, but spent that week declining to take part in a department store raid.

Regardless, I’m really enjoying it, and it’s providing me with plenty of inspiration.

@Vendetta Everything seems okay. Didn’t seem to be buggy or anything.

“Somehow, you don’t think they’re playing with their nipples.” This made me laugh out loud. xD

Hm, after trying to emulate the circumstances that caused the first Chuck meeting, the sailor scene following, and the following job Chuck offers to skip for me, I have yet to be able to repeat it, so maybe it was just a one time glitch or it’s all in my head.

Anyways, I quite liked the ability to do a job for everyone before deciding who to side with, more fun and more profit. Plus it doesn’t hurt that my background of choice has skills that allow me to pull off each job well. One thing I found odd was the increase in leadership points from flirting with Carina, but that’s merely a minor nitpick.
