And I will never be able to bring myself to play the Fascists because of one simple fact, their treatment of homosexuals and other sexual “deviants”. For anyone interested a more thorough analysis of situation of homosexuals in Fascist Italy can be found here. While it’s approach was vastly different, in that Mussolini and the Fascist Italian State pretended that no such thing as (male) homosexuality legitimate existed and operated in collusion with the worst elements of the Church to suppress it. So while it was a “lesser” evil compared to Nazism’s concentration camps for homosexuals (which ironically did force the German state, in contrast to the Italian one to admit that existed in order to persecute it to the extent that it did) it was still evil and no character I play would therefore want to be a part of that hypocritical “moral” system.
I’ll also note that unlike the Jews, gay people have never individually, nor as a group received any sort of formal apology or compensation from the German, Italian, or even the Dutch state for the crimes committed against them by their state authorities during the war years.

Treating people poorly and discriminating them sound a bit lighter than what actualy happenend. Its not because the government didnt directly shoot peoples in the face that they didnt encourage or at the very least support their own civilians violent actions against the minority group. Now I know communists are not a nationality but an example could be the italian reaction to mussolini fascists attacking villages with a high number of communists. They didnt directly attack the communists but they still supplied the fascists with military equipment to continue what they did.

Same stuff could be said about america and black peoples. The government didnt directly round them up but they didnt raise a finger to stop this until very recently.

I understand your point the problem is commies hated deviants too (homosexuals) and sent them to forced camps or jail. Everyone hated gays back then. Oscar Wilde was jailed because just being Gay in democratic British empire. So you can play any side in peace sadly.

If I’m not wrong Lenin was pro gay marriage. Stalin was homophobic but again, he was also racist, sexist and said himself that he wasnt communist since 1909.

And please could you stop saying commie. If we can speak about fascists and nazi without problems I think we can stop degrading leftists too if it doesnt bother you too much.

I also feel the need to add that most members of the cambridge five, one of the soviet top spy group, were homosexuals.

Well Lenin at least decriminalised it, until Stalin re-criminalised it, of course. Don’t know if he was pro gay marriage, or unions, but at least he wasn’t anti-homosexual, so for the times, like Mara said, that was a big plus.
Then again some of the German Communists were positively Utopian in their ideals on gender and sexuality.

Again true and the Soviet Union did always have an underground “gay scene”, at least in the big cities, much like the West. Unlike Nazi Germany who preferred their gay scene to literally be under six feet of ground.

Many Communists leaders, who were unfortunately products of their time, I guess, did hate homosexuals, that’s certainly true, but unlike with Fascism the ideology itself doesn’t, nor do their allies since Communism doesn’t advocate allying with and co-opting the most reactionary pre-existing (religious) power structures and absorbing them into your regime.
In any case the Solidarity party in this fictional country are not true, die-hard Communists, but rather Democratic Socialists, of course that doesn’t quite rule out Stalinist elements in that party trying a (Moscow backed) power grab later on in the game, but for the moment the party on the radical Moravian left isn’t even Communist, let alone doctrinaire Stalinist in ideology.

This discussion should refocus; I truly hope we, as the MC will be able to take control of the faction we do play and we can direct a better outcome then was achieved historically.

I hope we are not along just for a ride into yesteryear, and what Alex has said I think we will be able to redirect history.

Oh sorry I didn’t know that English commie was an insult. In Spanish commie is just like nazi a short version of the word . Nazi from Nacionalsocialism Commie from Communism party.

No problems. I didnt know what it meant for you. I’m canadian so I based myself on the american meaning.

We used in franco times red as insult never commie . That’s why I never use Reds

Thats actualy funny because here its the opposite. Red is just the color of the party and was never used as an insult toward me but commie usualy came with an insult. Worst part is that I’m not even communist I’m a federalist socialist.

Here colors were always used as insults. GREY were secret police and strikes police
Blue was fachas the fascists.
Red the communists .
It is so deep in our psychology that even know each party has a color and you could hear don’t talk to him he is an orange

In America, the “Red Scare” is often used to describe the 1950’s cultural purging … The House UnAmerican Committee of Senator MacArthy fame was a huge purge of the “Communist” influences from the arts.

The CoG title “Hollywood Visionary” explores this topic and its evilness quite well… I recommend people play that at the same time they explore this because its very relevent.

“Commie” was used in the media as shorthand but both “Reds” and “Commies” were used interchangeably… “Commie” isn’t as bad an insult as others in modern world but at the height of the cold war it was like being called a “Jihadist” in today’s world.

So then what should I use? Red or Commie because communist is a too long word lol.
Edit I have decided called Colorao or Colorado another way of say red.

Honestly, I wasn’t bothered either way… to me the “insult” part of it has receded since the Soviet collapse so basically the past 30 years it has become more descriptive label and less a insult label.

Use what you will … either way, people will just roll their eyes and say - “there goes mara, again…” :rose:

We had a protestation movement for free education here a few years ago and the supporters wore those red squares on their chests and something similar happenend. It was a sort of socialism vs capitalism thing. The red squares wanted free education and the green squares I believe wanted private education or a raise in education costs. The green squares didnt really have a leader or organisation so I’m not too sure what they were for except capitalism. Pointing out the color was an insult but when used amongst respective groups it wasnt. Insults were more like f*cking red/green square than anything elaborate or thought out. We french-canadians are a simple people.

Well coming from you I dont really see it as an insult anymore considering you used it to avoid insulting in the first place.

I always believed the worse insult a French Canadian could say was to call someone “English” … its funny how all labels are context sensitive.

Well if you’re a separatist maybe. I mentioned this in the brexit thread. Its a bit complicated how it work here because with the regular ideologies we also have different forms depending on if they are separatist or not. I’m a federalist so I see no problem with english peoples. I believe in canada multiculturalism. The separatist movements is a bit more judgy. It was after all monopolised by Maurice Duplessi when he was elected back in the fifties and the man used political corruption and mass manipulation using the church to stay in power

These belief that english was evil came from him and his extreme right party. They wanted the separation from canada to better ensure they keep power and convinced the people that it was for the purity of the race and all the regular extreme right arguments. The people were really religious and believed the church who supported Duplessi for multiple reasons including him closing his eyes on pedophile priests cases.

Most people who are separatists and follow these belief mostly do so because thats what their parents believed. And those parents believed it because their parents were brain washed.

Edit: http://abuse.wikia.com/wiki/Duplessis_Orphans if anyone is interested in seing how deep corruption can go. This explain the whole scheme between the government and the church.

Double edit because I am an horrible person with an horrible memory: He also banned leftist parties and unions.

Another reason why no character of mine will ever go Fascist, they’d be protecting the real pedophiles and pederasts, who accuse gay men of being what they, themselves actually are in order to keep their wealth and power safe.
I think that when it comes to acting against the Church of this fictional country and exposing it for the utterly rotten institution it is, my mc is likely to be much more radical than Wulf.

It is sickening and I personally cannot believe the survivors accepted an offer that rotten from the government. Have any of them tried to sue the Roman Catholic Church and/or the heirs of estate of Duplessis himself, do you know?
In any case I think Trudeau should act on this since the Federal Canadian government apparently provided the funds. What do you think @Cataphrak , seeing as how you’re infinitely more versed in the Canadian political landscape than I am.

That seems a bit off considering the first time any Quebec government actually actively agitated and attempted to separate from Canada was under Levesque’s Party Quebecois which was and is very much an extremely left wing institution.
