Four out of five times, I will use my own first name. I don’t usually play as myself, but it helps me to recognize the MC. When I don’t do this, I tend to confuse my MC with an NPC, and things get confusing.
Every so often though, I will get creative and name my MC something like Dryw “Alfar” Elrick, or Elwyn Rex. Both of which are about as close to a literal translation of my first name as one can get.
If you want to encourage someone to use a suggested name then I would note that Waywalkers university managed to get me to choose one by giving each name a meaning.
Interesting… I might just delete all the current names and give them a background story…

I’d personally go for shadow assassin. The divine thing sounds like you should grow a concience all of a sudden.

I usually just name my characters Lobo Lilly for males & Lilly Lobo for females on my first play through then I will use preset names
Lobo - for obvious reasons
Lilly - the name of my future daughter
From_Beginnings, I do the same thing. Nothing cuts through confusion and parts the clouds like hearing a character address your MC by your real name. I’m like, “They must be talking to me!”

In RPG type WIPs I name my wizards Conan and my warriors Gandalf
In Kung Fu I was Hung Kung Phooey
If I play a detective or a cowboy I name him Clint North-Eastwood
In the demo of Rockstar (because I didn’t buy it) I choose a random name off my iTunes, so it’d range from J. Geils to Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page (Just realized those are all J’s so I’ll add some more) to Joan Jett…
In space ones I always go with Bones or Solo

I usually play as Jacob because that is the name of my most favourite character. The funny thing is I was sure it was a bug when I met a NPC with the same name in Unnatural :).
When I roleplay with a female character, I name her with the totally made up name of Ulmia for the very same reason.

I normally name my characters: ‘Duke’ the fluke who jukes (League ref). however I change it in every medieval game for obvious reasons.
