Treating "MC" as someone else other than the player?

I struggle to understand your reasoning, honestly. You don’t need to be a passive observer to play a character in a game, you simply… roleplay? Model a character and make them act according to the characterisation you gave them?

People are free to rate a game how they see fit, but one is also free to tell them that their rating was objectively unfair

Then I guess you and I are equal in lack of understanding. I fail to see your reasoning as much as you fail to see mine. As for the rating thingy, it’s like I said. The only difference is that I’m making myself known. Had I not done so, none would be the wiser.

I can only see one explanation for why you’d share that so insistently on a forum filled with IF writers  browbeating is not going going to get you more games with full customization. That’s very cheeky.
For an explanation of what roleplaying is and how it can be fun, I encourage you to watch some videos about tabletop rpgs.

I think it’s very entitled on your part to demand an author let you play exactly as yourself and give negative ratings if that isn’t the case. That’s petty and completely strange seeing as you’re playing a game and not a commission catered to you

No one is demanding nothing from anyone. I was just sharing my opinion on how I feel about games having those particular things locked and apparently, you didn’t like my opinion. Now it’s really simple. Some people will occasionally lift their opinion and make themselves targets because of it. Alternatively, they can stay quiet, rate the game they see fit and leave you guys wondering why the games are rated the way they are. Come to think of it, perhaps the second option would be best in my case. Tell you what. I will not apologise for the way I feel, nor will I apologise for my opinion. I will apologise however, for stating it in the first place.

We don’t have a problem with your opinion. We have a problem with you giving negative reviews to authors because you expect every game to be tailor-made to your preferences.

Right. I get it now. We opinionated people will just stay quiet and do our thing, leaving you to wonder why things are the way they are.

I suppose you’re entitled to your opinion. However, the discussion is only superficially about locked vs customizable characters. The deeper issue is about authorial intent. Certain stories can only be told with certain characters.

You can certainly rate how you see fit. It doesn’t change the fact that your criteria is unfair.

Loud and obnoxious are two sides of a very thin line.

In certain games, such as divided we fall for example, I get your point. However, there are certain games where even after reading through it, I fail to see the necessity for locking these specifics.

The necessity of actually finishing the game, perhaps? Or perhaps the necessity of telling the story how the author intended to.

I would like to encourage you to write your own story, even a short one. Maybe then you’ll understand the weight of the undertaking.

If a game promises full customization but comes short of it, you’d have a real reason to down vote it. But if it was never part of the premise and you still down vote it because you want every game to cater to your specific taste that means you’re being unfair. It’s like down voting every movie because it’s not the Matrix. :joy: Pure non-sense.

I hate shooters, I really hate them to point i cant see youtubers playing them without changing channel.

But there is the difference. I don’t go down voting games I know in bona fide I wont like just for the sake of making those authors or companies suffer a rating bombing.

I write lots of games. I see how hard is customize a game and show a myriad of choices inside the worlds you have in your mind. I also know how hard and how time consuming is making those variables matter.

So If I see that a game is clearly not what I want nor my genre I simply don’t go playing that game. I dont go and petty down vote it and make the life of that author harder.

Guys, I think we’re pretty much beating a dead horse here. If he’s not willing to discuss the issue in good faith, I think we’re just wasting our time and possibly feeding a troll.

You do you, I’ll do me. I think this is getting out of hand, so this will be my last message on this topic. I will now unfollow this post.

I believe this thread has ran its course.

As @AletheiaKnights says, it is time to move on to bigger and better things.
