Tin Star testing

@trollhunterthethird Yep, it fits Regina’s personality as presented. It would also balance out the genders of the love interests, although I suspect for most it would be a fling/one night stand since it would be a hard one to make work over the long term unless you cross over to the dark side and ally with her and her brother. I don’t see her forgiving you if you kill her brother. And then there is still the issue of her feelings for Hungry Snake, which may or may not be an impediment to something lasting depending on how exactly she sees that relationship. Heck, it might be the MC that is asked to put up with being part of a triangle/threesome this time around. :stuck_out_tongue:

@stsword I get the feeling that @Babisko isn’t looking for a triangle or a threesome. Nevertheless, having poked through the code in the past 24 hours, both a Yiska/Schmidt triangle and a Yiska/Carrie threesome are possible if your relationship and persuasion scores are high enough. Carrie in particular is very eager to be in a threesome with Yiska and the MC, so you only need to convince Yiska in that case. On the other hand, while Schmidt isn’t interested in Yiska, they can be convinced to share the MC. Schmidt/Carrie always forces you to pick one or the other however, or leave them both.

stsword- do you remember how you dealt with chapter 8 in that play through where chapter nine kept repeating? This is because I think I missed setting a chapter_8_outcome variable somewhere and that variable sets up chapter 9. In chapter 8 did you attack the enemy’s camp or fight at the rail-head?

JackHerge- Good catches. I’m glad you find it addictive enough to play through so many times.

P.Tigras- Thank you. I have tried to make ‘Tin-Star’ a flexible story.

I also like your critique on Regina. She can indeed do just about anything as a villainess. However, it is too late in the game to fit in a romance with her. Heck, its too late to do much more involving that scene since her brother is just a little ways off.

Babisko- Mandatory Romance isn’t really what I had in mind. Indeed, I’ve already had to adjust a portion of Maria’s conversations to get around that very thing. Do you remember any of the sentence fragments that forced you onto an unwanted romance path in Chapter 7? That will help me locate the portion that needs fixing without having to hunt through the code.

I just remember talking to Schmidt, and went through the options, asking how he was doing, and then swapping stories where it took us to going to eat a meal. It was right after you choose the eating options “are you hungry” and to dig in yourself that it sent me to three choices, two of them were normal but the third was a start romance.

EDIT: Just checked it through a save file that went to chapter 6. I don’t know, tried some of the options again but it worked right and didn’t force me into the relationship, so, I don’t know, either it’s been fixed, or there’s some special path of choices that I managed to figure out twice in a row.

@AllenGies I got the same glitch as stsword and I made a stand at the rail-head.

Well in chapter eight I chose to go along with Marshall James’ plan, I ride the bear to get rid of the cannons, and throw nitro to end the fight.

It might be a coincidence, but in the playthrough in which I captured Reginald didn't result in the bug.

Have you considered releasing this in paid segments? It’s a massive gamebook and more than good enough to merit micropayments, and would allow you to be paid while you continue to work on it. You already have enough for the first few parts.

@AllenGies
I got the same glitch as stsword as well.
But like them if I had captured one of “the Reg’s” then I did NOT get the glitch.

Some typos while I remember them:
“Oh, I had a character with a steam piston drive heart.” Martin explains, “but my editor felt it was too impossible even for an impossible tale. Then I discovered your electric spark and… well, I couldn’t pass that up. And you (*add know?)what, they want a sequel.”

The walk back to your office is one filled with increasing doubt. You never asked for identification from Marshal James. And what could he have shown you anyway? But another Marshal has appeared and laid claim to Lander country (*county). Coincidence? That would be a small word for this.

Despite the incessant labor, people readily gossip about how you convinced an entire saloon of the guilt of Mister Steele. Indeed, those where (*who) were there and ‘voted’ take a special pride in having done the right thing.

“What is this?” You hear from the doorway, turn to find a woman with long, ice white hair standing there. Dressed all in black, Mother Maddy is supposedly in mourning for the (*her?) five husbands.

“Salted fish, especially this ocean salmon, keeps a long time and can (*add be) a tasteful alternative to beef.” Wong Dai Choi notes as he retrieves a gutted fish covered in a light powder of salt.

“I see. Allow me to examine you…” Wong Dai Choi offers, and with the lightest of touches presses down (*add and) up certain portions of your arms, shoulders and neck.

He hops down from the wagon, pushes it aide (*aside) with an ox’s sinew and waves you on through after.

“I am Misses Anya Admunsen. who are you, Stranger?”

“I’m the law, that’s who.”

“I’m just a traveler. Call me Jordan.”

“I an (*am) Jordan Keaton, and I’m looking for a job.”

“Name’s Keaton, Indian-fighter.”

“Fortunately, you would not have to do much work.” Anya says. “We captured on (*one) of their kind. You should be able to trade him for peace.”

“Traditionally, excepting Queens such as Elizabeth, Victoria, Boudicca, and so on.” Yiska explains, “as you might not (*note) I am not too fond of some traditions.”

Miss Caraway follows after you, a pistol in one hand and reins in the other. Only (*add when) you two are far away does she holster.

A little while later, the wagon that serves as a gate rolls back and the man (*men) amble down; with Randall at their head.

“Deal?” She scoffs. “There is none of that per se. They hold nothing but the threat of violence over our heads and one does not ‘deal’ with such people. No, I fear these (*there) will be only one end to these red savages.”

Market for second hand coffins:“Probably.” Preston muses, “if you were (*add to) dig them up quickly…”

A tiny silhouette catches your eye. There, on the nearby stoop, sits whiskered Mo. His tail is wrapped round his chubby body (*add as he) stares over at you. His little shiny eyes are like beads of onyx as he watches you watch him. Strange, but you can’t remember him greeting you outside in winter and at night.

Yiska staggers back to his feet, draws in a ragged breath. “Know this. I and the Shoshone, indeed all the Newe, will fight with all our strength if we have not (*no) other choice in how we are to survive.”

You grasp the spear, ignore the bite of the head against your palm as you jerk it form (*from) Yiska’s grasp.

Miss Caraway heaves burning logs her (*here) and there, even sacrifices a little whiskey to coax a lazy flame back to life.

As you pull the weapon free, it shatters into tiny shard (shards)that cover the fallen man in midnight fragments of the past.

Babisko- I found the glitch. It was indeed a rare aligning of variables that forced you
into a romance. But when I update it should be fixed. Glad you noticed and were willing to help me track it down.

The Waffle, stsword- Okay, I put a patch on the variable in question ahead of the earliest possible completion of chapter 8’s four possible paths. That should fix any portions I forgot to cover. Indeed, I think I’m going to make that my policy from now own with that particular part of the coding. If the MC reaches a point where he or she can’t jump to a different path, then I will just code in the outcome variable at that part so I can’t possibly miss it later.

pigglywinks- Am I glad you are back. All those typos, all so easy to fix. Thank you.

ADNox- That is an interesting idea. I believe Choice of Games has something of a get-paid-as-you-write policy, but Tin-Star was begun before that policy was implemented. Hopefully I’ll recoup my year’s worth of focus on the back end.

REALLY loved this game

P.s. apex patrol was great

A small forest of wet and green logs heavy with spring greet your fingers. But despite their every attempt to roll over and snare your feet, you dance across them the other side.

As you near the engine, you catch sight of Reginald straining to pull the thick iron pin that holds the two cars together. He takes one look at you then retreats back to the cover of the engine box. Regina strains to pull the thick iron pin that holds the two cars together. She takes one look at you then retreats back to the cover of the engine box.

Regina is supposed to be in prison in this playthrough.
Also she did the same thing as Reginald :B

@AllenGies

Is is possible for you to make a jump… know what I mean? Lets you jump from a chapter, lets say 3, to chapter, hmm… 6. Think I’ve seen this before, so… Maybe let us start at a certain chapter and we can set up everything we like to our needs? Like in Zombie Exodus (Did … join your Camp in Pt whatsoever?)
Sorry for reposting that stuff, I’m on my phone, … when I double post that thing.

At the end of Chapter 7 there is still a Beta-Break in (“that’s all for now”). Seeing as there is quite a lot more added since then, it seems a bit outdated. Same goes for Chapter 8, there’s is also a break in it where you can choose between the save point and “wrap_up”

If I go the General Store, take a look at the “Steel Mirror” dime novel and ask about the author, the clerk says that the author’s name is “C. Baldwin”, though at that point I head already visited the author at the telegraph station and I think his name was something with Martin.
On that note, during the talk with the author there was an instruction in brackets regarding to how to choose the answers. Don’t know if it is intentionally there or just a left-over from the draft, but since all the stat-influencing choices before that didn’t have any instructions it seems unnecessary.

Hayworth raises a set of binoculars, “these have got to be the raiders, don’t they? This is the war you were warning us about.”

Chapter 9:
“If bears could have dealt with them, I would have gladly have stepped aside.”
The choice comes after Carson discovered the two dead bodies.

what would you be doing if you weren’t with me?”
After I pick this choice (with Carrie) I get a blank page and a new choice with different possibilities.

Also, somewhere at this point it must have jumped from one story line to the other. One page I was talking to Carrie, the next I was in a band of bandits with Blue Dog and somehow on the Uptons side, with the possibility of attacking the railworkers while Reginald attacked them. At this point I hadn’t even talked to the Uptons (well, I tried shooting them in the cave with Hungry Snake, to no avail though), let alone agreed to help them.
Further reading through, it put me back to the fight in Chapter 8, which I had already won.
The loop starts anew once I go through the fight and to the talk with Carrie (after Carson retches his guts out), unrelated to which choices I make during the talk.
I can break out if it by helping the Uptons win, but I’d actually prefer to continue my story and to put them behind bars

With that, he and the other Indians depart. Even from across the valley, the booms of thunder crash like the start of a storm on a clear day. Soon, black smoke rises and the crackle-pop of rifle rife comes with it.

@AllenGies:
Carson works his rifle like a piano as he cuts down foe after foe. The bandits at the rear begin to dismount, firing as the (*they) do so.

Schmidt charges a knot of foes, lays into them with his dagger until there is not a single one left standing. The bandits at the rear begin to dismount, firing as the (*they) do so.

As you near the engine, you catch sight of Regina strains (*straining) to pull the thick iron pin that holds the two cars together. She takes one look at you then retreats back to the cover of the engine box.

Regina abruptly drops hers (*her) gun and steps away from the hostage.

This train, packed with gunpowder, would have been used to destroy a tunnel that the Central Pacific had crafted. A single match would have rubbled their work. However, you forced me to disconnect the cars in an attempt to halt this tedious very (*very tedious) conversation."

Bishop Hancock turns to her, squints. “You need not roll you (*your) eyes so at our belief. What will be, will be.”

“Yeah, we’re family.” Larry replies.

“There is only one answer to this. Jeff, you need to meet Larry’s sister for yourself. Paper doesn’t akways (*always) match life.”

“For what? Together they’d be wealthy enough to open a saloon or another hotel. But with them bickering and feuding, they won’t dig a ditch.” Preston points out. “I like the way things are, and I aim to keep it that way.”

“But if you were to place (*play) peacemaker, they’d owe you a big one. Maybe forever”

“Hello again, Marshal.” Regina says as you approach. "I’m surprised you aren’t dead.

“Nice to see you too.”

“Have you tried to escape yet?”

“I have this awful, terrible idea of involving you as a hostage.”

Pull Regina out of the cell, manacle her to within and (*an) inch of his (*her) life and shove her toward the door.

A thousand years of primal fear crawls up your spine as the lion licks it (*its) lips.

You grasp Schmidt’s shoulder and together you leap across the the (*double the) widening gap, grasp at a jut of iron with all your might.

Carefully move toward the passenger cars ahead.

Craft a fuse, light it, jump off and let the barrels do the work.

Take cover and wait for you (*your) enemies to reveal themselves.

You put a spur to your Grulla’s (*missing something here) and take off at a gallop toward the train. As you ride into plain view, the steam whistle shrieks from the locomotive. The clearing crew hurries off the track as the big wheels begin to turn. One by one, those men swing themselves onto the cars as they (*missing something here) to pass by.

Your horses reaches (*horse reaches or horses reach?) a steady gallop. The men work their way up to the top of the cars and begin to shift on back with rifles in hand. Not long afterward, the first shot cracks out above the churn of the engine.

You rush to Miss Caraway just as she gives a groan and rolls to the side. Her hip flash, pierced through and through, thumps dryly out onto the parched ground. Though the iron didn’t stop the round, it certainly slowed it down.
Carson’s rifle barks, as does Maria’s.
Miss Caraway’s pistols thunder alongside those of Carlos.
*Q: But Caraway was shot and was on the ground…is she well enough to keep fighting?

Across the way, Reginald takes careful aim at you with a cold iron pistol.

Take careful aim.

Try to take him prisoner.

Snap off a shot.

Charge him with your obsidian war-ax.

*Q: But I already had him as a prisoner…

“I am sick and tired of fighting you people on this train.”

“If you are here, who is running the engine?”

“What exactly is your plan here?”

“They go bankrupt and…”

“You could surrender you know…” *Q: This option remains even after choosing.

Q: Arrested Admunsens and took them to Carson City but then it jumps to options with Preston.
“Typical.” Anya sighs. “But we’ll get bailed and we’ll get lawyers.” “That is how it is done.” Yiska puts in, draws a glare from them both. Thankfully, that is as hostile as they get the whole ride out.
(Law and Order increased)

Really lay into Preston for all he did and didn’t do.

I am bothered by Preston just now and can’t hide it.

Let it go. Preston is not worth it.

*Q: Wong Dai Choi says same thing At Albion Falls and At Railway. Since I had met him at both places, shouldn’t he say something different?
“Nothing to sell, but perhaps something to give.” He says, leans forward slightly. “Something for the woman who has acts with the best intentions of the heart.”

“Is this like a Chinese tale, where you tell me a secret that will change my life?”

“Yes. The secret is, work very, very hard.” Wong Dai Choi says with a knowing smile. “No, what I am talking about is a technique for concentration. A simple matter of putting one’s mind in the proper harmony. A kind of… calm, that allows one to act despite distractions.”

“I don’t follow what you are saying.”

“I am offering something to you, for free.” Wong Dai Choi says, lets slip a rare smile of disbelief. “No, what I am talking about is a technique for concentration. A simple matter of putting one’s mind in the proper harmony. A kind of… calm, that allows one to act despite distractions.”

“Why don’t we walk out there together?” Schmidt suggests, “there’s some real pretty flowers that only bloom where the soil’s been turned. Shame about the cause, but they are beautiful all the same.”
“Glad to help.” Schmidt offers over, takes your hand and gives it a little squeeze. “Can we get together later? I’ve got some business to settle before close of the day, but I’d love to see you at sunset.”
“See you then.” He suggests, gently kisses your hand and all but sends you skipping out the door.
Hand in hand, you and Schmidt head out toward Boot Hill.
Q: Schmidt and I were gonna go to Boot Hill, then it said we were gonna meet later but then we went to Boot Hill.

Q: I did not invite Caraway along but as I leave for Boot Hill it is like she is with me…
With that out of the way, you ponder visiting the grave of Marshal James.

Invite Caraway along.

It will be better to go alone after Miss Caraway leaves.

“Glad we got that out of the way.” Miss Caraway offers over. You look back to Miss Caraway, find her idly leaning against the nearby wall.

Leave her be. ***

#“Last chance to visit the grave of a Marshal.”
You step out the door and head for Boot Hill.

“Others?”

“You sound sad.”

Stay quiet and let her talk.

Pick up your pace and get to the hill.

Ya know what? I decided to make up a sort of ‘theme song’ for the Tin Star, (This is for those generally ‘good’, and have all three companions). It’s to the theme of Underdog (The Blanks version). Maybe an acapella had heard of the (in)famous Tin Star, and it inspired them? Anyway, I can’t compose and this is basically just an edited version of Under dog to fit the ‘Tin Star’.

There is no need to fear,
For the (Wo)man of might is here,
Mountaineer and deadly Saint,
Plus two guns which make men faint,
Trouble calls, they’re not slow,
It’s hip, hip, hip, and away they go!

When Coaches in these roads appear,
And carry gold from far to here,
An’ Hartigan calls are coming near,
The cry goes up, from mayor Preston,
For the Tin Star, the Tin Star,
the Tin Star, the Tin Star

Speed of Lightning, roar of Thunder,
People gape, as (s)he walks above us!
the Tin star, the Tin Star, the Tin Star

When a red ribbon starts to foil,
The mighty river which gold has toiled,
Donner knows he’s rest assured!
'Cause Tin Star has the plan secured,
the Tin Star, the Tin Star
the Tin Star, the Tin Star

There’s no need to fear or quaver!
All his/her legal’s done by Yisk-er,
The Tin Star, oh, Tin Star!

And when a Steele knife had come,
Tin Star made sure the job was done,
By kicking his rear out the door,
The whole Saloon gaped in awe!
At Tin Star! Tin Star
Tin Star, Tin Star

Lander county’s safe as heaven!
'Cause of all their strife, and effort!
Tin Star,
Oh how (s)he’s marvelous,
Now time to end our song,
The Tin Star, The Tin Star!

So that’s it! Just a bit of an idea, don’t mind me.
