I got the legend entry for fighting off a bear without a gun when I rode away
@AllenGies I like @VoodooDolly 's udea of Yiska mistaking you for a man. Yiska and the MC could have a running joke about it throughout the game. But I do agree with @Apillis that it could make things awkward of you want to romance him as a women.
lolli04- I’ll look into. Do you recall what the circumstances were of it? There are several ways to run away from the bear.
VoodooDolly, Apillis, Kitty9- I’ve found that the best way to deal with these circumstances is to offer the MC a choice in the matter.
*if gender >1
#“All those names are male…”
“Yes, I know.” Yiska replies, “is that a problem?”
*choice
#“That depends. Why did you do it?”
“Well, Catherine the Great was called Le Grand in French. ‘Le’
Grand, the masculine gender.” Yiska explains. “I chose to offer the
same for you.”
#“Are you blind?”
“No, its just that vigor, strength and courage leaped to my mind as
as I saw you.” Yiska explains hastily.
#“I’d prefer something less pointed.”
“I’ve already named you. Sorry. No take-backs.” Yiska says with
a shrug. “if I did that for you then everyone would be asking.”
I was with Schmidt, waited when we came to the bush and turned and rode off when the bear showed up
Oh, it’s true! On my character’s Legend score, it also says I fought the bear, whereas what my character actually did was wait, piss themselves, and then ride off, ha. I assume Survival and Brawling are the stats that make it possible to fight the bear, right?
Q: How does the Native American axe become available? I only saw it during one play, and it never showed up during the rest, I don’t know what I did right/wrong.
About the Yiska thing, I was suggesting Yiska confusing the character’s gender during their first encounter in the Red Ribbon Company, not during the whole play time. Realising the character’s real gender seconds after but being too uncomfortable to bring it up. However, the solution above seems easier, coding-wise. Still, the idea of sensibility being feminine and assertiveness, independence, or determination being masculine is very sexist, and to be honest, very narrow minded and erroneous. I’ll never see Yiska the same way again, ha.
VD, there are several paths to surviving the bear, what I’ve done from personal experience is: High rifle with decent riding, or a very fun option is to have a very high intimidation that the bear runs with its tail between its legs.
Methods I’ve heard about but never tried are really high gunfighting, really high brawl, or even having enough stamina to outrun the bear.
Or take Old Dan on the trip, he apparently has enough survival skill that none of that is an issue.
As for the obsidian ax, don't get a melee weapon and give the supplies to the tribe as a gift, and the ax will be one of the things they will offer to give you in return.
@AllenGies
Re: masculine Indian name/Yiska situation.
I like the track you are on there and as always I love the snark!
She could say: “Ok, I know female Marshals are unusual and all but give me a break.” Or “Am I really that masculine looking?!”
Yiska:“uh um no it is quite obvious you are a woman.” Awkward!
I can see my Lady Marshal getting a complex about the whole gender thing…especially after meeting the calvary and what Lieutenant Dalton says. At that point, with what happens with Yiska then Dalton, I could see the female MC getting fed up and saying: “I swear if one more person mentions my gender they better be faster than my bullet; unless they are telling me I am a damm beautiful woman or the prettiest darn Marshal they’ve ever seen!”
BTW, what about having a fling with Hungry Snake? If you had high brawl and/or imtimidation and joined the gang. You know how Carrie likes Yiska and would’t mind “sharing” him…that could happen with Hungry Snake.
There is a lot of relationship choices as it is so no biggie, just a thought. ;
@VoodooDolly
I would love to be an official Beta Tester for CoG games. Alas, I have a day job, house and hubby. Darn Real Life getting in the way!
I think my husband is jealous of my time with Tin Star as it is.
@piggleywinks @AllenGies “I swear if one more person mentions my gender they better be faster than my bullet; unless they are telling me I am a damm beautiful woman or the prettiest darn Marshal they’ve ever seen!”
^ This. I want to see this in there. I love it. I lawled.
Thanks!
The hubby doesn’t understand the importance of being a Marshal, haha.
I also support this suggestion, regarding the gendered names issue.
And… Another question.
Q: How is the character struck by lighting? I never got that scene.
@VoodooDolly I’ve got it with the religious trait. Go up into the mountains when the storm comes and raise your arms to the lord…
Just finally got around to playing chapter 8…Oh my gosh great twist, so happy to see MC actions payoff, and it was just a lovely intense chapter! =D
How do you get the obsidian war axe?
@VoodooDolly I’ve gotten it several times. At the beginning when riding out to the county you’re to be Marshal of, when the storm hits, go up the mountain. I’ve always gotten nailed just by looking for shelter up at the top of the mountain to avoid possibly being flooded from down below. But yeah, so long as you ride up the mountain during the thunderstorm for whatever reason, there’s a chance you’ll get nailed by lightning.
@AllenGies Not only your game is fun, with an interesting setting full of endearing characters but it’s also highly replayable and I’m enjoying all my different playthroughs very much:).
One thing I’ve never ever been able to unlock is the Schmidt special romance scenes in chapter 4 despite having him at 97 influence; and I don’t really understand how it can be done. Even when I look at the code
I just saw that it requires schmidt_bonus =2 but I can’t figure out how to unlock it.
lolli04- Ah, I see it now. I forgot to change a variable through and through. Thanks for noticing it.
piggleywinks- That’s a good call back. Dalton is kind of a prick (on purpose) and taking him down a peg in chapter 7 wouldn’t be a terrible thing. I’ll try to massage a variation of those lines into things this weekend.
Lanawinst- Thank you. Replay is one aspect I was going for. Schmidt’s early Romance is difficult (Looking at the code now, it is actually impossible) to unlock mainly because I decided to change my mind about how to implement things for exactly the same reason you indicated; sometimes you just can’t pull it off. Later chapters just gives you the outright choice to commence a romance rather than build up to it.
The idea was that the MC would build up to it by taking Schmidt along, gain an advance of the bonus scene each time. Once for each chapter (two, three and four) that he is present. At least, that is how it is supposed to be, but it grew too clumsy to handle.
I’ll have to dive in, see if I can’t shake things out in a favorable manner without disrupting the pace of the later romance.
@AllenGies just a question, do you put references to films etc. in Tin Star? I saw a line that looked suspiciously Star Wars-esque…
