Tin Star testing

To make everything and one in the game novel politically correct instead of historically correct would ruin it. But malenmal232 has a point, the actual churches name should be mention somewhere in there, but since non-mormons called mormons back then mormons then that is what they called them so it makes since for npcs to call them that.

@malenmal232 Is being called a mormon really offensive to all of you or is it just some who find it offensive? A good friend of mine is a mormon and he doesn’t seem to mind being called a mormon at all and even has called himself that when I or someone else asked him about it.

@AllenGies You really should add the save game system, I find it ALOT more convenient and handy. I think all the games on Cog should have the save game system, it’d be a heck of alot handier/faster than saving the password save codes in a file. So please add it to your game [-O<

Theotian- Right now, there are only two ways of saving Andy on his death bed. One of those is to be a doctor. I am thinking of adding another way, namely by having a high survival skill.

malenmal232-I am sorry if it seems as though I am insulting the LDS church. I’m not. However, as Redgrave pointed out, some of the characters in the story have their own opinions.

At the time of the story, the LDS church had only been around for fifty years and change, and it was largely suspect in many people’s minds. Of course, the same held true for Jews, Catholics, the Irish, Negroes, Indians… pretty much you name it if it wasn’t White, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant. If I were to soften some of the character perspectives on that, I feel it would diminish the story as well as the struggle of the LDS Church during those years.

That said, I do want to get things right as it pertains to members of the LDS Church. To that end, I could use your help.

In conversation I have read they use the term Brother or Sister, or a religious title in case of an Elder, but when speaking of themselves as a group do members of the LDS Church truly refer to themselves Saints? Such as ‘we Saints stand ready’ or ‘I can talk to the Saints around Albion Falls’? If not, are there other terms they would have used circa 1867?

Wyrmspawn-Funny you should mention the uniting of enemies as I plot out chapter eight.

As far as Yiska goes, I gave him plot immunity because it would be too difficult to write around him otherwise. After all, he isn’t a companion who can be dispatched with. In that way, Yiska is more like Preston or Elder Hancock. So long as he is vital to moving the story ahead, he stays alive.

However, in Chapter eight, the gloves come off.

Now, about the Indians in Chapter six. Right now, I don’t see a way that anyone, even the most incredible gunslinger, is going to out fight forty-plus braves on his or her own. However, I could add in a portion where you kill Taboonsheya and then escape. It would utterly tank your influence with Yiska, but that’s of little matter I suppose.

Does that seem like a useful addition to Chapter six?

@AllenGies For those that would choose that option it might entertain them abit, but I don’t see how ruining the MC’s influence with Yiska would be beneficial. It would also sting a gunslinger’s pride to have to run away from a fight like that. Maybe settling the fight in a duel between the MC and the braves’ strongest and best-est warrior would be a good alternative option for the player to pick. Or maybe the player could choose to settle the differences between the mc and indians by talking it out.

Cloudian- Yeah, I need to figure out a better solution to the ‘I’d like to commit a war-crime and I’m a bad-ass so I can pull it off’ problem. I’m also reluctant to let the MC settle things with a duel for several reasons, starting with The Six Lodges Chief not wanting to fight and the fact that the chance for an epic Indian Duel appears in chapter seven.

Trouble is, if you put a button out on a console, sooner or later, someone’s going to push it. The same apparently applies to Indians and pistols. Maybe it would be enough for the MC to start shooting and force the Indians to flee… Certainly that would provide the notoriety and legend that the player was looking for by attempting a massacre.

Gah, what a dark thread.

On a happier note, I’m going to be attempting a mini-update this weekend. I’m also taking a look at a save-game plugin. If I can figure it out, I’ll implement it.

Having trouble with the save-game plugin. Stand-by.

Still having problems with the save game file. No time now to clear things up. Sunday will have to do.

Success! Thanks to CJW’s wizardry, the new save system appears to be working. Let me know how it goes.

@AllenGies Don’t worry I know you were not purposely insulting our church. I wasn’t that offended. I really just wanted it to be accurate, and thought it’d interest you to know more. I really do like the game. To answer your question, nowadays, it is not considered offensive to be called Mormon. HOWEVER, at the time this game was set in, being called ‘Mormon’ was considered derogatory, because it was used negatively by those who persecuted us. We consider our true name to be “Saints.” (A reference to the title “Latter Day Saints”) Back then, the members of the church used the term “Saints” rather than “Mormon,” so you would be accurate by using the word “saints” instead. You are right, we have always called adults “Brother” and “Sister” and use their last name, such as “Sister Adams” or something like that. I believe that you meant for “Elder Hancock” to be a bishop. In that situation, he would be called “Bishop Hancock.” “Elder” is a term used mostly for male missionaries. Thank you for not getting mad at me and for listening to me, I really appreciate that, and I hope I was helpful!

I liked being able to fistfight my way out of most situations. x3

I also got a ton of legend lol

I killed Schmidt though, which I felt bad about.

@AllenGies (passes out)

malenmal232- You are certainly being helpful, and I am glad we understand one another. Writing about the past can be a tricky thing. An eyebrow is bound to be raised eventually concerning word choice and common thought.

I went back through the chapters and considered afresh every use of the word Mormon. As I half expected, I had used it in a few places it would not have been said. Likewise, if Schmidt and Carson become friends, then Schmidt should lay off the use of it.

I’m a little sad to see that I’ll have to remove Elder Hancock’s title. I liked how it sounded, but a little more digging found that it is indeed reserved as a personal title for missionaries, General Authorities and Area Seventies, all of which Hancock is definitely not. So, Bishop it is… unless you can think of another title a Saint in charge of a ward might use.

Patch101- Thank you for the data set. That is indeed the highest brawling score that I have seen. Far higher than I expected any to get. Did you have a chance to duel Many Falling Rocks?

Any chance you still have your legend results available? I want to see how some characters turn out so that I can write a balanced legend wrap-up at the end.

Theotian- That’s pretty much what happened after I finished up on Sunday. It is amazing that I felt so tired after having done so little.

@Allengies I too am working on a choice game and i completely understand the feeling lol. No rush ,but this is a seriously great game.I am just glad it has a save system so now i can try out all the other paths without worrying about losing progress.
