The problem with identity, as stsword indicated, is resolved much as Wyrmspawn surmises. Besides the papers your character carries, other records would be on file somewhere central, say Carson City in Nevada, Washington D.C. or maybe Sacramento.
The inhabitants of a small town on the Frontier wouldn’t have access to something like that… though if they knew someone in one of those cities, and sent a letter of telegram, then they might be able to have someone else dig up the documents that Marshal James put in for you. That is, of course, assuming they had cause to do so; for the most part, people took one another on the strength of their word. Call yourself by one name, make a claim to a different past, and they’d believe you because there simply weren’t many ways to verify much of anything.
Back in the days before typewriters, lots of people didn’t have birth certificates. You were lucky to have an announcement in the papers, and connecting something like that with a particular person would take a lot of effort. Years worth, perhaps. I could easily see that being the expiration date on being a Marshal; the point at which people start to ask questions (For whatever reason) and do some real digging by going around and making inquiries about this or that to steadily stitch facts together until the lies fly apart.
That said, I’m making a note of including the option to up and vanish at the end of things. A mysterious twist to your law enforcement career. A sort of ‘Not much is known about Marshal X, no date of birth or hometown was ever recorded…’ intro that any historian would have to include. The other option would be to have Marshal James (If he’s still alive) put in additional documentation to make your identity permanent.
Yes, AllenGies, I’m talking about visiting the bandits after saving the other victim of the bandit I go to the valley to see what the bandits want.
Since I had a decent brawl skill instead of being a smoothtalker I decided to try my luck against snakey guy.
Instead I got the "Thanks for coming in on your own power, made my work easier" confrontation with Carroway's dad just as if I had snuck in or just rode in.
It seemed to be the "Snuck in at night" scenario playing out if that helps.
@AllenGies Yup, that one. Because I find it a little annoying to have to keep clicking the questions instead of just reading and pressing next. But if it’s too troublesome, then forget it, because it’s just a minor inconvenience.
I don’t believe his last name is ever given; nor his real/original name. And no, he is not listed in the influence section. Neither is Maria. Of course, if she was listed, with all of her last names, that would rather dominate the stats page
RoseQueenKamijo- Thank you. I’m glad the game holds up through that many replays.
I do have a few questions about the data set of your character. Your stats seem a tad low and your influences are nearly average. Do you recall your play through style?
Yiska isn’t listed? Oops. It looks like I’ll have to revise the stat screen when I’ve got time. Maria should probably be listed too.
As Stsword and RoseQueenKamijo noted, Albion refers to Albion Falls, the Mormon community to the north of Preston Springs. Initially I was going to give the player the option to base their office out of there, but that ended up being too much of a programming headache for very little gain.
Perhaps I should change Albion to Elder Hancock, as that is the primary Mormon figure with whom you interact. (Carson excepted)
that was the first time I played…still had not caught the hang of it. now I know how to get the bear’s growl and in the legend they made a movie about me and countless books n stuff XD. once you get further chapters do you think you could add the relationship history in a background thing like the stuff in the legend? @AllenGies
RoseQueenKamijo- Oh, the wrap up definitely needs work. Then again, I haven’t written the ending yet. It will include… a lot. Definitely the romance, but also your character’s effect upon the county and Nevada. The current wrap up of things is really just a place holder, much like the stat screen.
Stsword- Good point. Early Hollywood being what it was, a Chinese character with speaking role would probably be a white guy wearing eyeliner. Then again, a Chinese Marshal might have been precedent enough to open up roles for the part. I’m not saying that Bruce Lee would have signed on, but it might not have been David Carradine. Either way, it is definitely something for me to remember to include in the wrap up.
