Wyrmspawn- I like those, but is there a way to replace the Fat in Wong Fat Choi? The word has an English translation that could be distracting.

Wong Dai Choi could also work. Dai means big in Cantonese, so it would mean King Big Money in a literal translation. In mandarin that would be Wang Da Cai. A name that isn’t very elegant, but serves the job of a merchant. A more elegant name might not translate well to English, though.
One more thing. Would this merchant be friendly like the store owner or the saddler, or stoic like the blacksmith, or cold, or exploiting?

Sorry about the double post, just remembered something I’d been meaning to say for a long time. In Chinese culture, or amongst Chinese circles, people who are disloyal to friends and family are struck by lightning as punishment. Maybe you could implement something for when you meet the Chinese for the Has Been Struck By Lighting trait?
Wyrmspawn- I think I will go with Wong Dai Choi. He’d be Cantonese then, right?
His demeanor is always helpful, even when you are being difficult. Be difficult though and he won’t show you his entire stock or actually be as helpful as he could be. After all, he does not show his teas and medicines to just any Gweilo.
I also like the crossing of the struck-by-lightning trait and Wong Dai. That is something I will definitely incorporate. Many thanks.

@AllenGies Fat Choi is pronounced ‘Fa-art Cho-Oi’, so maybe you could include that in?
EDIT: Oops, didn’t see the new page, but the struck by lightning thing is more of like Person A betrays person B and person B would say ‘For being such a bad person, Heaven will strike you down with lightning!’
Chinese also swear oaths with lightning. Should I be lying, may the skies strike and the thunders roar, or something like that. And yeah, Xt1000305 is right, its used that way more often. In the bedtime stories though, the villains are struck by lightning.
Yeah, like ‘I swear not to betray you, if i do, may heaven strike me down with lightning!’
Also, if you become really good friends with a chinese person, maybe you could become sworn brothers with the person?

Actually, I think Wong Dai Choi should be ‘Dai Choi Wong’ instead, as ‘Wong Dai Choi’ translates to ‘King Big Money’, but ‘Dai Choi Wong’ translates to ‘Big Money King’
Dai Choi Wong sounds a little like a nickname. There are some people who have family names of Dai, but I’m not sure its the same “Dai”. It’s the Dai as in wearing something, right? Wong Dai Choi can be a real name, but I agree that Dai Choi Wong would be more grammatically correct… for a translation of King of Big Money.
Incidentally, how many of us here are Chinese? I mean, Chinese in the real world, not in the game.
I’m one! Hmm… Maybe his real name can be something else, but everyone calls him ‘Dai Choi Wong’ because he makes lots of money?

Okay, oaths by lightning then.
I do like the idea that everybody (who speaks a little Chinese anyway) calls him ‘Dai Choi Wong’ because he makes lots of money, even though his name is Wong Dai Choi. Those little quirks can make a character seem real.
Or you could call him Hu Feng or something, and have a bunch of jokes, and then have his nickname be ‘Dai Choi Wong’

As promised, Chapter six of Tin-star. I wasn’t able to edit it repeatedly as I would prefer, but at 900k it has proven too unwieldy. Chapter seven will have less sprawl. At least, it better.
So, play through and tell me where I’ve screwed up. I am especially wary of loops, as this chapter is likely prone to that sort of thing. Please Include the usual sentence fragment so I can go right to the trouble spot.

Xt1000305- Good point. Dai Choi Wong might well be a nickname that he’s taken as his own. I’ll give it some thought. He is only in one scene so far.
DreamWalker- Glad you enjoyed it. There will be more, but right now I have just begun writing chapter seven (of eight, probably) and so the whole thing is still several months shy of completion.
