Tin Star testing

i tried my best to increase the brawling skill,to be honest i cant recall ever using it
and the only time i remember my doctor trait changing anything was saving andy

Matteller- I used the doctor skill to patch up Miss Caraway’s leg.

you dont need to be a doctor to do that i did it as a lawyer

Well then that was a waste of time.

Maybe a bit of free time would be nice
Just to walk around get to know the townsfolk a bit

maybe stop in at a store or two to spend some cash
I like mardams ideas
Are there stores in town?
Buy some stuff at the general store like a fancy chocolate bar, stop in at the local gunsmith to check out the iron, buy a new saddle for my horse from the livery
Stuff like that
It would make me feel more attached to the town

I love the game don’t get me wrong
This is my second favourite western game, red dead redemption is number 1
So your in good company

But it seems like I always have to do something.

Those are all good. I think I need to put in an interlude between the chapters. A short scene or two when you can indeed purchase something more than hardtack and bullets. Some items might give a small stat boost; A new scope increases sharpshooting, brass knuckles for brawling, chocolate for persuasion, etc.

I would also like for players to visit one location in the town per chapter. I can’t make it entirely free-form though because I’ll go nuts trying to code it. But there are three Saloons, the Hotel, a General Store, a Firearms and Gunpowder store, the Assayer’s office, the Tannery, the Slaughterhouse and probably a few other establishments that could be interesting. Especially if you aren’t hard pressed to swing into action.

It might also be possible to use the Lawyer or Doctor traits to make a little money on the side. Most Lawmen had to do something of the kind, ranging from prospecting to gambling to protecting businesses as hired guns. Upon seeing that the Sheriff or Marshal was in the saloon and armed, most people were a little more civil in their drinking and gambling.

The idea of buying a home, upgrading a home, etc, would also let the player feel connected as well giving another locale for the story and romance to play out .

Patch101- Fixing up Caraway’s leg is how the trait of Doctor is gained. I didn’t want to require such care to come from being a doctor, as that felt too restrictive.

Right now, there are only a few places where being a doctor can make a significant difference. Healing Andy is the big one. The others are helping Frank recover and getting a special Indian name from Yiska. Not a lot, I know. but this is just the initial draft.

If you have any suggestions on where being a Doctor might make a big difference or help earn Legend (Or Notoriety) points, I’d be happy to hear it. That is because, right now, I’m trying to assemble chapter 5 and plotting out a digital mystery (with romance) has proven to be a bit more complicated than I had thought.

I am also still considering adding a Medicine skill to take over some of the functionality of the Doctor trait. It could help govern how much health is recovered at certain points… but that feels like it might be superfluous. As someone pointed out, most of the wounds can be treated by the kind of first aid that anyone out west would know.

The Doctor skill could earn you legend if say indians hit the town and you gain legend depending on if you treat the indian injured as well as the settlers.

cool @allengies you’r the writer of apex patrol right

the doctor skill maybe could be implemented into some backstory like of malpractice
you must face the hangman noose

What about also building a courthouse

For some reason I can’t send Miss Caraway to Elko for a trial.
Whenever I either decide to arrange it or escort her the text just loops.

Same here

Patch101- That’s not a bad idea. The Doctor Skill should certainly accrue legend for treatment of the patient, the more notable the patient and grievous the injury, the more legend earned.

Bezment78- Yes, I wrote Apex Patrol and I hope you liked it. I learned a great deal of how not to code while writing that, and so ‘Tin Star’ is a good deal leaner and yet there feels as though there is more story. If I ever retro-fit Apex Patrol, I will try to tidy things up a little.

Good point about the Doctor Skill and the hangman’s noose. I hadn’t really given much thought to the death that put you on the gallows. That is saved for later chapters. But it would almost certainly come up eventually. Letting the player choose how they got there and why could be interesting.

Mardam- Buildings. Hmm… now there is a thought. Not just a courthouse but other structures as well. That’d be a lot of extra coding, but it could be worth it. I’ll give the idea some thought as the chapters progress.

Mistylavenda- Interesting data set. The bullet scar is a rarity among players. Where did you receive it? I’d also ask about the relatively low influence numbers (Compared to some I have seen).

Noogai and Zed- Which section in particular loops? If you could post a snipped of the text, that will make it easy to find. Though I think there is probably only one place it could do so. I’ll see if I can’t figure out what it is doing and why.

Umm, the one after you capture Miss Caraway, with 4 choices, I think?

When I was getting rid of the dam, I got shot.

I have no idea why I have so little influence honestly. :stuck_out_tongue:

If it helps I arrested miss Caraway by tricking her into using all her bullets.
