There is a new update available for the members of my Patreon page! This update will be accessible by the public one week from today. In the update, I’ve uploaded the final public demo (the route where both main characters join the Radicals in chapter 6 is new), fixed some spelling/grammar errors I found, and written some 401,908 more words.
There’s also lore/supplementary content, commissioned artwork, and polls, so if that sounds like something you would be interested in, consider becoming a patron!
THE FINAL PUBLIC DEMO OF THESE RELUCTANT YEARS IS NOW ACCESSIBLE.
It includes:
All six chapters of the story up until the final battle.
The battle and epilogue(s) are currently being written and will be accessible to beta testers and those who purchase the final game.
New content is the route in chapter six where both MC1 and MC2 joined the Radicals.
More than 1.5 million words.
A feature-complete quick-start menu.
Please note that the quick-start feature will NOT be present in the beta test or the final game – it is merely for ease of use for players who want to experience the newest content.
It’s been a long few years, but I would like to thank everyone that stuck by me throughout everything! All of my supporters on the Choice of Games forum, Tumblr, Patreon, and elsewhere mean the world to me. I truly couldn’t have done any of this without you all, and I would like to extent my sincere gratitude to those who were patient with me as I juggled my career as a narrative designer (my “day job,” as it were) with writing Years. I can’t say it’s been the smoothest ride, but the end is in sight! Keep an eye out for a beta test and final release!
@EvilChani Hello! This is the post you requested be made in my own forum thread. I would like the account associated with the previous versions of the demo of my game to be deleted, like we discussed. Thank you very much!
In this story-game, you will have the opportunity to control two main characters and steer them throughout their journeys within the Colonies, an island controlled by the authoritarian Sovereignty. One of your characters is the second child of a noble family, and the other can be part of one of three unique peoples. You will witness the oppression of your nation firsthand, and choose whether you want to end it forever or perpetuate the cycle of tyranny. Whatever you choose, know that the world will be forever changed by the actions you take during These Reluctant Years…
In These Reluctant Years, you can:
Play as non-binary (including custom pronouns), trans, or cis.
Be gay, straight, bisexual, asexual, or aromantic.
Play as one of those exiled from the Mainland centuries ago, or a seal-like or deer-like people.
Romance a fiery revolutionary, a fashionable socialite, a casual soldier, a cruel nobleman, or the other player character.
Meet new friends, lovers, and enemies from all walks of life.
Explore the rich lore and past of the world’s history, religion, and geography in the library section of the stats screen.
Side with the radicals or traditionalists in a battle for the Colonies’ future.
The average playthrough of These Reluctant Years is (rounded up) 757,000 words. Including code, the total word count is approximately 2.8 million.

If you’ve never beta tested for one of my games, before, here’s how I do it! First, if you want to participate, you just need to post here. People will be added to rounds sequentially on a first-come basis. So, for example, if Billy asks to beta test one second after Susie posted and claimed the last slot in round 1, Billy would get the first slot in round 2. There are 5 slots per round and three or so back-up testers that I will keep in mind in case someone either does not give any feedback (or inadequate feedback) within the required time. Everyone gets 1 week from the time I send them a private message with the link to the game to give me a response. Unfortunately, if you do not get back to me, then you will not be bumped to the next round and I cannot credit you in the final release.
Hi @Writing_Fever congrats on reaching beta testing stage! I’ve merged the new post with this thread for tidiness as it’s one thread per WIP. If there’s any issues with editing the top post or title give the moderators a shout. Best of luck with playtesting!
I remember you! I still go back and look at your fanart from time to time.
You are the first tester in round 1. Once every slot has been filled, I will private message you separately with a link to the game and some more details about the feedback I’m looking for.
Also, I wanted to note that, in the event I massively overestimated the amount of traction the beta test will receive, I will be slightly adjusting the process. If five people do not sign up after one week (so, in this case, by January 30th), I will take however many people have already signed up and send them the finished game for testing. From there, they will have one week to respond with feedback like usual.
Even if no one else signs up after today, I will still leave the beta test open for the required month before submitting Years to the Hosted Games label. If, say, there are no sign-ups until the last day of the necessary one month period of public beta testing, then that person would get a week to respond, like everyone else.
