# Progress Report - The Wayhaven Chronicles—14/Oct/2022

So I got back from my break this week, and I had a wonderful time seeing my friend! We talked about Wayhaven A LOT, so I had to be super careful not to let spoilers slip, hehe!

But I was seriously craving writing by the time I got back on Wednesday!

Had to jump back in with social media days first though, which was a good way of getting myself back into the groove. Writing the Patreon Spooky Specials helped curb some of my built up writing needs, lol!

Also had a massive meeting with Nai this week to talk out where things are at and where we need to be headed now that we’re so close. She has some awesome fun marketing things planned coming up that I am so excited for her to share, and I got to really plan out how I want the final push of writing to go.

Fitting in everything else was the difficult part, what with editing, getting stuff to SpunkyCat, chapters to the sensitivity readers, starting to look at how beta-testing is gonna go (hoping to get some professional beta testers in this time around as well!), playtesting, playtesting some more…then playtesting again, lol!

But it was good to list everything out and just see where we’re at.

Mostly I will just be focusing on getting the last chapters out. I was ahead of myself for Chapter 19 before my break, so I’m hoping I can blast through the last section of that tomorrow and next week.

While I was on break, I did think over something in Chapter 19 I want to change though. It fit so perfectly into the scene at the time, but it’s a big revelation that is actually a major part of the Book 4 opening, so I’m definitely going to have to leave it out, or it will lessen the impact of the revelation in Book 4!

I already know what I want to replace it with in that scene though, so I’m excited to write that!

I had a couple of asks about the dates for Patreon Scenarios (which I know I usually do at the beginning of the month), so here they are:

‘On a Moonlit Night…’ (Felix/Farah Spooky Special) - October 6th

Having been ordered to set up camp and keep watch for the night, F and the MC find themselves a little distracted…right up until the point a shadowy figure decides to make a spooky appearance outside of their tent.

And as the MC says, ‘You know, I’m pretty sure this is how most horror movies start.’

‘Skeletons in the Closet…’ (Nate/Nat Spooky Special) - October 13th

An unexpected encounter with a shapeshifter leaves the MC with even more unanswered questions about Nate/Nat’s past…

‘Through Fog and Smoke…’ (Mason/Morgan Spooky Special) - October 20th

When something, or someone, is trying to weave the past to their liking, Mason/Morgan takes major offense to it…especially when it might mess with their precious memories of the MC.

‘That was a little Corny…’ (Adam/Ava Spooky Special) - October 27th

As if a corn maze on Halloween night wasn’t scary enough, there’s some Rogue supernatural hiding out amongst the bales preying on unsuspecting victims. But what better excuse for Adam/Ava to request the MC’s time than with another mission…?

I hope you all have an amazing weekend! We’ll be offline as usual, so I’ll update you all again next week! <3

The Wayhaven Chronicles—Update 28/Oct/2022
On Tuesday night (morning?) at 1am, the writing for Chapter 19 was completed!!

I hadn’t actually meant to stay up so late, but I was on a serious roll, and I could see the end in sight so I just went with it! I’m a night owl anyway, so it worked out well.

Editing was supposed to come next, but I was way too eager to get started on Chapter 20 so I jumped straight into it on Wednesday and have been hammering through it!

Chapter 20 is gonna be a long one to write. It has a couple of ‘mop up’ scenes at the start which actually have some huge moments in it as well as a major choice concerning a couple of characters depending on which branches your MC chose. Book Three is definitely one for quite a few of the BIG story and character branches starting out.

After those scenes, it’s split scenes for the love interests where there’s quite a bit of emotional impact, especially to a couple of them! Oh guys…these scenes…

I’m going to keep writing today and get to editing tomorrow. There is a ton of editing to do, especially as I still need to get chapters over to SpunkyCat, but now I’m so close to the end I’m just really driven to get all the base writing done and wait to do the editing and things when I can give my full concentration to it.

Next week will be social media days, so I’ll be writing around that. The last of the Spooky Scenarios went up on Patreon this week, and next month will also have more Special Scenarios but this time Cosy Autumnal Romance! I’ll put up the dates and descriptions of those in next Friday’s update after I’ve written them.

Phew, it’s a serious buzz of energy at the moment! I’m anxious, I’m excited, I’m eager… a lot of feelings going on as I really am reaching towards that end point for the writing!! (Chapter 20 is the penultimate chapter!)

Hope you all have the best weekend! We’ll be offline as usual, so I’ll update you all again next Friday! <3

Keep up the great work writing. I only have a few questions: one how many books are you planning on.? I’m sure someone asked already. Two when can you lock in the romances? I’m mostly curious about A and N’s Versions.

There will be 7 books iirc.

All romances get locked in toward the end of book 1, when you choose who you’re interested in. Once you make that choice, you’re in the romance… well, you’re on the path to the romance in three of the instances (A, M, LT).

Unless you mean when you get to choose between A and N in the LT? That’s going to be a while, most likely, at least according to what I’ve read on Sera’s tumblr.

The Wayhaven Chronicles—Update 05/Nov/2022

Quick one today as our internet is being very finicky (decided not to work pretty much all day yesterday!), and I want to make sure this goes out before it cuts out again!

Brill week with getting the social media up together! Loved writing the Cosy Patreon Specials. Definitely more of a gentle, fluffy romance feel than the drama of last month’s Spooky Scenarios, hehe!

Those are gonna be:

To Make Fire Jealous (Farah/Felix Special) - 3rd November 2022

Some time out together around the campfire reveals some deep truths and heated moments…

Amongst the Apple Trees (Mason/Morgan Special) - 10th November 2022

A rare moment of peace allows Mason/Morgan the chance to show their vulnerability…

Where Leaves Fall (Adam/Ava Special) - 17th November 2022

With no missions or threat, the MC enjoys getting to see a more open side of Adam/Ava as they share a drink at Haley’s…

Careful, It’s Fragile (Nate/Nat Special) - 24th November 2022

A trip to the Big City to look for a birthday gift leads to Nate/Nat revealing a little more about where they’re at in the relationship…

I was in a very romantic mood for these, hehe

Chapter Twenty is in full swing too! I’ve finished up every scene for Book Three for a few of the characters, which feels like such a major milestone!

A lot of what I’ve been working on—for all of Book Three—has been trying to ensure I’m giving each of the LI’s PoVs a unique voice and feel. It’s something I struggle with as I write such quantity that it’s easy to stick to my usual patterns! But it’s definitely something I want to start coming through more.

So for M it’s short choppy sentences as they think sharply. A is more logical and direct. N is flowing, much more novel-style, and F is the one I can just write for and make it feel casual and airy.

Next week will be more of the same: Just powering through Chapter Twenty. I’m really going to get some editing time in too!

Hope you all have the most fantastic weekend! We’ll be offline as usual, so I’ll update you all again next Friday <3

Some of my thoughts and ideas regarding the first 2 books and the final demo in tandem with each other.

NOTE: All of these include spoilers for the plot/characters so don’t be upsetti spagetti if you open them and see spicy spoiling spoilers.

Theory of the Traitor:

I believe the traitor is Mommy Dearest, touching on the demo as well for the third game.

Why? Because not only is the leader a woman (which is barely anything to go off of), I think that the death of Rook would shake her beliefs in the Agency to protect people. She saw with her own eyes what happens to agents, and I think that in lieu of her child getting involved she is presented with either.

I think the biggest problem with the theory would be the leaking of the information about the Detective’s blood, but there could be good enough reason given. She explained herself from the start she believed the information could not be protected, I think that the Bounty was put out by her to get the Detective out of Agency hands. With the trappers, and the auction, I believe the intent Rebecca had was the Bounty would put them back in her custody.

However, instead, the auctioneer feels they can sell the Detective for more. I know that the Detective’s eyes resembles their father’s more in a direct sense… However, I believe that there is a raw quality that would be similar to Rebecca, Falk doesn’t comment things in a direct manner. I think he was not saying they had the same eye color but more in deference to their determination/vigor.

Theory of the Detective's Roots:

I believe that it is clear the Detective negates ALL forms of magic. They cannot feel magic’s touches, nor can they be pushed by the barrier. However, they still feel some negative reactions, as in M’s route the Detective will get a migraine from M’s intense pheromones. I think perhaps the magic negation can cause a toll on the Detective, and that might be explored in later books once they understand the full depth of their abilities.

Theory of Romances:

I kind of want to touch on a more broad sense but I think that something that definitely needs addressed sooner rather than later is the age gap. Even if my Detective were in their forties, most of the people in Unit Bravo are quite literally over a century old.

I think a rather intuitive resolution for this problem would be just including or focusing in on the isolation of the vampires from normal experiences most of the time. Adam, in particular, having a disinterest in humanity for most of the time he has been a vampire meant he didn’t really bother to experience things. He is older, in a literal sense, but the ‘stasis’ he was in for most of his time as a vampire meant that he couldn’t truly experience.

Also, personally, I find the idea that none of the vampires who are over a century old have had romantic partners in the past? I think that it would make sense if one or more of them had a serious committed relationship that ended up with their partner dead of old age or the like. Particularly in Adam’s case, I think it would go a long way in humanizing why he doesn’t want to give into his emotions. He doesn’t want to because he has been burned before, because he knows that falling in love with a human is a recipe for disaster.

Note on Queerness:

I think it would be interesting if there would be an exploration on queer identities for the supernatural and specifically Unit Bravo. In Nate and Adam’s cases especially, being born in an era where being bisexual or a woman was heavily frowned upon… I think that having some hang ups about it would be interesting.

At the very least, I found myself disappointed that there is no mention at all on it as a difference. I think even a passing mention when in Adam or Nate’s perspective of twinge of discomfort at their own feelings because of their past would be nice. Any form of acknowledgement that the past was not nice to queer people would be cool.

I personally have to disagree with the portion concerning queerness, Sera said that the prejudices and bigotry that exist in our current world, doesn’t exist in the Wayhaven universe. I think that’s the best way to go about it, as why would you want realistic bigotry or mentions of it in a fantasy romance?

Plus if you’re bringing that in that also means bringing other heavy topics such as xenophobia, racism, sexism and so on. If this was a historical romance, then I could see your point but that’s not the case.

…and for that we are Thankful

That is fair, I suppose. Wayhaven just felt grounded enough that I didn’t really recognize it as being in a ‘separate universe’ but interpreted it as being in our own (but with sexy vampires and shite running the show under the surface).

I’m writing a historical fantasy story myself, so it’s quite amusing you were to bring it up. Anyway, with that being said if Sera clarified it’s in an alternate universe I have no problems with it how it is now :person_shrugging:

Except Falk meets Rebecca in our presence and he makes no mention of anything, even though he warns us about the Rogue Leader before AND after.

They do not. If they did, then even the sympathetic magic Falk uses to track them down in B2 wouldn’t work.

I meant directly. Sanja says herself that the way they tracked was through the interaction with the object not through the MC themself.

Also, I feel quite silly for not remembering Falk and Rebecca meeting, though in my defense after my first and second playthrough I started skimming at points. If this is true then it would be quite the wrench indeed. I still think it’s possible, through an intermediary or the like, but it seems less likely with that acknowledged.

Even in historical fiction, it depends on the genre. Why would you want a fun romance interrupted with racism or something? But a realistic mystery/thriller could work well with more serious themes

After MY first playthrough the only text I paid attention to are the different RO responses, so I know how you feel.

Romance doesn’t need to be exclusive to darker themes though. I really enjoy the romance in “I, the Forgotten One,” for example. Obren’s slow burn is so sweet and probably one of my favorite of all time.

In general though, personally, ‘forbidden romance’ appeals to me a lot conceptually. That is probably why I quite like the acknowledgement of anti-LGBT sentiments even if they do not let that stop them from actually seeking out a relationship anyway. It’s nice for it to feel seen and disrespected too.
