I don’t think you will be able to get the stories like how you like it since it require extensive writing on every small and big choices for Players. Even in table top game with real life Dungeon Master, there will be rail-road, since it is a catalyst for the story, and any big RPG game such as Dragon Age: Origin, or Witcher, there are always rail-road.
First, I want to congratulate @NutellaQueen on this release. I’ve been following your work since the very first demo of The Wanted Unwanted Warrior was released and must say I loved The Sword of Rhivenia as much I loved your other WIP.
I see a lot of criticism on this tread about the stats and skills. The way I see this book is more story-oriented and acts like prologue for the rest of the story, an introduction to the world and lore. It makes sense, story wise, we don’t make use of our skills very often: the MC grew up in a bubble, pretty much isolated from the rest of the world. They didn’t have the need to defend themselves because they were always surrounded by guards. They didn’t have the need to use their leadership to rally troops, neither did they have the need to manipulate people. They were just a kid training to be the next monarch.
Now, about the rebellion plot people seem to dislike, it is perfectly understandable people dislike their ruler. The peasants are living a major economic crisis, that has been going on for years, aggravated by the threat of war. As if that was not enough, their monarch is a teenager with no experience in ruling a kingdom and have no idea how the peasants live due to living isolated at a castle their whole life. Any sane person, under those circumstances, would be displeased. No matter what you do, they will always dislike the person on the throne, because they associate the negative aspects of their lives (poverty, war, poisoning) with the monarch and their actions.

I just tried out a route where I tried romancing Xavier while still keeping him locked up in the dungeon and it still worked out lol.
Still there’s still something I find hilariously disturbing is the fact that despite Xavier escaping imprisonment during the poisoning he still runs back to you MC and tells you he couldn’t run away fully because he tells the MC that he just felt completely empty inside despite having his freedom and gets himself infected.
It’s pretty messed up considering the fact that he’s been terribly mistreated in your castle and if your MC cares for him, MC becomes his only ray of hope and grows to become compliant on being held captive, heck one could even call it Stockholm syndrome for the Mcs who keep him caged since he was so eager to return to them lmao.
I might be over-analyzing this but I think that it’d be cool if certain dynamics change in the romance in book 2 depending if your Mc sets him free or not.

That’s true, certain elements will sometimes force a game to take on a set path. But I’d like to point out that the games Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven, Fallen Hero: Rebirth, or even Infinity Series were able to deliver well despite being massive. Yes, some paths leads to the same outcomes, but the writers were able to make these games uber enjoyable that replaying them isn’t a chore.
I’m not picky. Really. I don’t need to have a perfect game for me to enjoy it. If it’s fun, if it’s well-written, if I can’t stop coming back to it just so I can replay the other scenarios I missed, then it’s good enough for me. While Nutella didn’t make the perfect game, I still enjoyed it to some extent.
Edit x2: And I’ve said it many times before, I simp so hard for Xavier… okay and Jarean. That’s why I really want that second book.

After playing through all romances, I can definitely see why Daemir is as popular as he is. He’s not my type, but I greatly appreciate the slow burn of his route and really look forward to seeing it develop. Xavier and Jarean (poly) is still my favourite route however, purely because I love their personalities and I like the unique moment they both have during the poisoning scene with the player character that no other ROs in book 1 seem to experience. Especially when you decide to adopt Leia as right off the bat they’ve all met each other now and you can already get a vibe for how that family dynamic will be with both MC, Xavier and Jarean as parents in Book 2. It really does feel like a “destiny” moment for the 4 of them instead of adopting Leia and then seeing your RO later on.
I always freed Xavier in all of my playthroughs until the last one and I was surprised we could invite him with us to town if we kept him locked up. Honestly though? I still think helping him escape is the wayyyy better outcome even if you miss out on that bonus interaction. My reasoning being:

I think his romance is better paced when you help him escape (and he leaves grateful to you) and you don’t properly interact with him again until some time has passed and he returns with his sister. It’s only a fleeting interaction, but it feels more satisfying when he risks his life to return to you at the end when you’ve been poisoned because you already risked something for him (your family/kingdom’s respect and trust). I feel like keeping him as a prisoner until then makes it feel less passionate and anti-climatic because he went from being depressed and not being allowed to leave to willingly risking his life for the MC despite having no real reason to outside of being nice to him. An MC who theoretically, could promise to release him for years and never keep their promise. It’s like Beauty and the Beast if Beast never allowed Belle to leave the castle and instead kept giving her false hope but she was willing to be with him anyway.

Bringing both him and Jarean to the tavern feels like a disservice to both characters since they don’t really interact with each other and you miss out on properly bonding with one of them. It’s a way more satisfying build up saying goodbye to Xavier, spending that day with Jarean at the tavern alone in his absence (getting to know him) and then having both him and Xavier meet for the first time near the end when they’re both risking their lives for MC and they have actual communication with each other (which feels a bit weird if they technically already met before then and didn’t bother). So spending the entire first half of the story with Xavier, then Jarean in his absence, then reuniting with both men who are in a better place with Jarean being able to help provide for his mother and Xavier having time to live his life for a while ever since he was captured and reflect on everything.
The interaction between them both is short, but I already like their dynamic together and I think they’ll make a really sweet couple with the MC. One thing I’m excited for is when Jarean’s secret is revealed (I’m convinced he’s the pirate that Tameran destroyed the eye of) because not only does it lead to interesting drama but it will be sweet to see both MC and Xavier potentially accept him regardless of his origin since all three can be in love with each other. I absolutely love the fact that we can have a good romance between them both and it’s not just MC only. I personally think it opens up a lot of interesting dynamics in future books and there’s a LOT of potential there for something you really don’t see explored in a lot of in fiction

Thing is how could Astryn be so stupid?
Like one thing is supporting your friend and sharing his goals but giving away your birthright to him possibly breaking the continuous reign of an ancient dynasty?
It is not difficult to imagine if she alienated a huge chunk of the nobility with that move and are only going along Erwan’s campaign just because they hate Rhivenians historically to the core and would declare war on them no matter the reason,that Erwan is a bastard but on Pagonia they just not care much about birth and status possibly sealed the deal.
The men at arms and nobles would have followed Astryn with far more loyalty than they would Erwan,Astryn being Queen and Erwan being her retainer during the time of the story would make sense without losing the shock effect(that’s what basically Erwan as King of Pagonia is).
Astryn’s parents must be so pissed in their graves,her daughter just gifted her family’s power like it was a candy,going from Pagonians heir to incompetent low key assasin,then she becomes so obsessed with revenge that presents herself on their sworn enemy’s castle and just decides that openly plotting will get her somewhere.

They complain and revolt in every ending. They’ll always find a way to find flaws with the kingdom leader even more so when mc is picked depending on the speech.
Our brother is too soft during his rule dealing with problems while our older sister is harsh and brutal. People only distrust the mc because we are the last heir so everyone thinks we are too inexperienced but their reactions can differ depending how we handle every problem. Even our family is worried.

BUG: If you decide to execute Astryn after becoming the King/Queen, your RO choice resets for no reason. Everyone’s relationship with you becomes “Friend” or “Not care”.
Before finding about the virus, the first choice given about her fate.
I agree, instead of stepping down Astryn could have just married Erwan and use her powers as a queen to support him in the war or just simple made him officerly the king with her as his wife.
PS… I know Astryn and Erwan are childhood friends but do they have feeling to each outers? especially if Astryn was not romance by the MC
I thing Erwan may have some feeling for her because if the MC who was chosen by the sword and have execute her the first change they got, he will cry the moment he find out, especially if we send him her head.

There is one HG Game where you play as a badass female sanctioned psyker gal of the glorious inquisition that does psyker things and inquisition stuff. And you get to fight a minor daemon or two and kill some stupid heretics, while having a really wholesome relationship with one of your three companions (I think they’re the only people you can have a “true” relationship with, I remember having an option to seduce and have seggs with some guy… but I dunno I forgot).
The three companions: a hot nympho throne agent or sumthing, a chick that has a thing for melee and blood but thankfully not the Khornish kind cuz that would be really bad and heretical (she’s also a throne agent? maybe… probably… idk I forgor), or a totally innocent Emperor-loving priestess (was she a priestess? I dunno I also forgot lol) of the AdMinistorum that works with the inquisition (she also smokes so that’s cool :p), it’s called Holy Ordos.

Okay as I remember there are technically three endings for ruler mc, the bad speech ending where everyone wants to rebel, the good speech ending where some people wanna rebel but others don’t, and the perfect speech ending where it’s basically the same as the good speech one but a lot more people are leaning on not rebelling (check the code). How do you get the perfect ending while keeping Astryn alive and not forgiving her as well?

I’m not too sure if you can, honestly.
Astryn literally helped poison most of your kingdom and got half of them killed. If you refuse to spill her blood as revenge then the people will lose faith in you against their enemies because you wouldn’t kill someone who’s already caused so much harm. Even if you don’t forgive Astryn and are only keeping her alive to create peace with the enemy, the people won’t see it that way because they’re angry and want vengeance, not peace.
