Oh nice! Was he a one or two term president then? Because if it’s the latter and the MC is a democrat, its a real Reagan-Bush situation (well Hoffman isn’t VP)!
Hm… Gonna try to map out the possible Presidencies in my head now leading to Reynolds! Assuming Biden won 2020 with a 2021 divergence… Actually 4 years of Biden, then harris succeeds him as a one term president and both Harris and reynolds are one term, then that gets 2036 for hoffman as one term and 49th… Or 2044 is MC v Hoffman and a prior president can be two term. (I am lunch and bored…)
If you’re looking for a solid, concrete period for when it takes place, I refer you to this comment.
My headcanon (as someone who will only ever play Dem) was that Hoffman was Reynolds’ VP and took over circa ‘36 after Reynolds’ death/resignation [yes this doesn’t work if Hoffman is a Democrat, call it Schrödinger’s Partisan Affiliation], but IIRC Hoffman mentions in the debate that he was Governor of Florida, so that’s out.
By the way, are we ever going to get Reynolds’ first name? I can’t complete my timeline of presidents with only surnames.
I never specify how many terms Reynolds got to also keep things a bit fluid in the year. I will also say that the official diverging point (from real-life events) is around 2021ish – so in theory this universe could also see a two-term Biden!
True! Lot of possibilities! I was mostly thinking how to get to 50 by 2040! I suppose also someone could end up dying or resigning! That helps push up the number!
Writer’s Diary #52 & Public beta Update #4 October 2nd, 2024
As promised, (what may be the last) update has now been published in the demo! I should be getting final drafts of artwork by the end of the week, and am planning on submitting TPH for publishing as soon as I finish my own read-through.
Updates & Edits
As I mentioned before, I’ve now gone in to add achievements for all of the various endings
I’m forgetting who mentioned this, but I have now added the ability to select how your kids refer to you and your partner for same-sex couples (which was previously only an option for non-binary characters/spouses). This should help to avoid confusion in some scenes where characters would refer to both you and your spouse as mom or dad
You can now select who proposes to who in the prologue
I did go ahead and write in a brief epilogue for the re-election ending; there isn’t too much in it, but I think it wraps up the story nicely and keeps all endings uniform
Lastly, I’ve gone through and fixed quite a few grammatical issues, spelling issues, and incorrect tenses – though still have a bit more to comb through
To-Dos
My only major to-do left is to finish my read-through of Chapters 4 and 5 to catch other spelling and tense errors
I will also be adding in chapter headers as soon as my illustrator finishes them up!
As I mentioned, I should be getting all artwork sometime towards the end of this week, freeing up the last major thing on my checklist before submitting. As of yesterday, this public beta has been open for a full month, meaning I’m just about fully ready to submit the story for publishing! Like in previous weeks, flagging any fixes by copying & pasting them is hugely helpful.
Thank you all again for helping out through the beta process – I really think all of your suggestions have helped to make the story much more engaging, coherent, and fluid. If all goes according to plan, you can expect my next major announcement to be regarding submission!
There is something I’m curious about. If the player chooses to keep the Olympus Program for personal use, when do you plan to allow us to use it later on. The second book? Or do you plan to implement it as an option for something minor like blackmail of a character?
Given how I choose to be a corrupt, strong armed President, who sided with Russia in hopes to be able to do some more spicy stuff with them, my character would totally go to war for no reason (hell I wanted to go to war for no reason, I thought it would be interesting to do war as the leader of an nation and see how it would differ from being a soldier or an general)
