The Myrmidon (WIP) (Minor update 03/10/2017)

I think i might have found a spelling mistake i’m not sure

For you however, the ‘party’ is anything but jovial. You have been pushed and wheedled up to the dining hall, which has been cleared after a great meal and is now home to two dozen chairs and a great box hidden under a blanket.

When i read it thought it should be wheeled instead of wheedled

Nice catch, but actually the term ‘wheedled’ is actually a somewhat old fashioned word that means to persuade someone (or in this case something) to do something. Synonyms would be words like coax, induce or inveigle (I admit that last one doesn’t clear things up…).

I could make it a little clearer, the term is not strictly well used anymore.

Because it’s a deliberately ambiguous and multi-layered comment meant to be interpreted however the reader (or the author) might want to perhaps.

This promises to be an excellent game either way, no matter the minor cosmetic details of the mc.

You sir cause my brain to all but full out buffer there for a few moments while I was reading your story. I mean goodness I had reread a few times for it to sink in that the original MC was killed in the first bit of the story. I was like a banner was dropped that screamed “Angst Ahoy!” The the sparklers and the flashing lights pointing at said banner came when I read through the rebel rout so far… The Angst is real and I adore it! Also I love the wit shown so far, let alone the layers! Oh goodness, the layers! I’m so excited to see where this story goes, I’m already starting to get attached to the characters and finding ones I love to hate already, and the teaser only helped. So right, before I ramble I just wanted to say it’s great so far and I’m so excited to see what you are going to do with it! Also side note the Ferris Bueller reference made me chuckle. Also really regret the life choice of not saving the VCR tapes my folks threw out years ago. I’ve been wanting to re-watch it since I read this.

Okay, yeah, I’m done rambling now, promise…and off I go to reread again~ -skips away before she starts really rambling.-

I didn’t know it a term that was used, with all the literacy english lessons i had at school that word never appeared

That’s a common side effect, run-on sentences and imprudent use of words like ‘wheedled’ apparently cause a stack-flow error in the Human brain.

…You should know that I have a habit of deflecting honest compliments with humour.

I’m working on it…

I’m actually getting some of those printed up for special occasions.

You’re being entirely too nice…

Go on.

Don’t stop yourself on my account, some of our finest discussions come about through a well-timed ramble.

Either way, we love having you here, grab a drink and do get comfortable, won’t you?

I assure you I didn’t make it up, although I do feel that I owe it to you to prove it…

See? Totes a real word.

Looking at that page now, i’m actually remembering hearing and seeing it in films/books and i can blame of thinking it as a misspelling because of watching and playing Pokémon in the 90’s with this Pokémon in mind

Sounds delicous.

Also will we get the option to insult flash.
Just to get on their nerves hearing someone who looks and acts like flash insulting him and his death.

I managed to avoid ever being welcomed by means of just jumping into a conversation without any introduction or questions. :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess I should remedy that with a question. There has already been a so many interesting questions about the settings and characters that I can’t think of anything to add. I do however have a question about narrative structure: How do you intend for the branching paths to work out?

A naive view of what we’ve seen so far could give the impression that there is essentially three separate games in one. Will these separate paths eventually meet up? Will there be a series of meeting points where the paths follow the same line for some time before splitting off again? I think you mentioned something about switching from one path to another at one time, is that correct? How would you adapt the paths to account for the fact that you missed part of it and experienced something else in its place?

To be honest, I’m quite intrigued by your decision to create three so separate branching paths so early in the game. It kinda goes against everything I know about interactive narrative design, and I am very curious how you are planing to go through with it.

Quick question, is there going to be any shy female characters that we are able to romance?

I’m just asking because if there’s one thing I love is a shy female love interest, but if there is not I won’t mind.

…I just wanna be the quiet genius stoner type who seems like a complete dipshit to those who don’t know him, but then he opens his mouth and bam! Genius! What would I need to be careful of wishing for in this scenario?

Why couldn’t it be the fun type of creepy box that not only heals Flash, but decides to give 'em a tail just to screw around with everyone?

Adding it to the list, thanks!

…I’m betting that the Wolf wanted someone to watch Tommy Wiseau’s The Room with, and Arinthas was the only one he could find desperate enough to do so.

YUS! Kindred spirit self-loathing MCs? high five

why am I picturing a Myrmidon Centipede right now? Why? WHY?

…Willard-us Rex is mage-path only? Bummer.

You’re in what essentially amounts to a sanctuary for us ramblers thus far. Or… wait… hold on…

…bleh, I wanted to find a ‘ONE OF US’ gif from that one movie, but came up empty. Anyway. Like Robert Plant once or twice or many times sang out, you just gotta keep on ramblin’.

And here we have a picture of my favorite Z movie character, Blast HardCheese. AKA Big McLargeHuge. AKA…

Wait, is that an actual slab of beef cut like a piece of cake with chocolate sauce and a cherry on top? Or is it an actual cake made to look like beef and also it has chocolate sauce and a cherry on top?

Why is this a thing? Besides the fun visual pun, I mean. Internet people are weird.

I’m obviously not the author, so take this with an entire mine’s worth of salt (plus an over-salted stadium pretzel or six), but I’ve imagined the game playing out like Fire Emblem:Fates in that once you’re on your path, you stay on it.You get only part of the story/find out some of what’s going on and this all depends on which path you take - they’re all kinda different in terms of tone and gameplay in FE:F, too, but the differences here are prolly definitely going to be much deeper- and there will be points in the game where characters will be like ‘gee, wonder what would’ve happened if you’d have done this on that path? Guess we’ll never know…’ And so in order to get the full view of what’s going on, you gotta play through each path at least once, but it’s not really an issue because the path you played through already was pretty fun (if sad), why wouldn’t the other paths be the same?

…anyway, that’s why I refer to the bit where you choose your destiny as ‘The Branch of Fate.’ If my wordsplosion made any salt-lick of sense.

…And I think he said he wouldn’t allow for branch hopping. Something about coding and nightmares and such. But, please, don’t quote me on any of this.

edit: one MORE thing.

Are you planning for any of the already established human characters to have altered genes?

I’d merrily attend a saucy puppet show with each and every one.

The Thinker stimulates thinking.
Who’da thunk?
And such wishful thinking has been endlessly stimulating.

Still, I remain firmly in Camp Sexbot…

er, Camp Courtesan…droid.

It took a gentleperson and a scholar not to mention a certain Cornwallian duchess. May the Forge forgive me for being neither.

I do keep unnerving myself by reading the Vodyanoy were
sensualists.

Which culture and/or mythos would you say were the inspiration for the Vovodans? Something akin to Proto-Atlanteans?

Aha!

So that’s where D.B. landed.

By the by, I never said, but your synopsis is art and makes my mind dance like no one’s watching, (and it’s not just because you’ve unknowingly given my name several shout-outs.)
Although, strangely enough, I do believe Echo and I share the same tailor…

Hmm… I suppose so… Won’t win you many friends I should think.

My dear Kurai, I welcome you as a friend and offer you a drink as I sway gently from side to side.

The three paths will be quite firmly separated, as jumping from one to the other would be far too much work for one so crippling inept as I. The three-story structure actually came about very early on, when this project was a collaborative one. Then as now my insatiable hunger for world-building and plot meant that there was a lot more of me in the idea than anyone else, so ultimately it didn’t work out. Nobody wants to feel like they’re standing on the periphery watching someone else do all the cool stuff.

Anyway, originally the game was divided into three sub-plots so that other people could be given a chance to go off and do their own thing, returning their own stories to be incorporated into the wider game. After it all fell apart, I couldn’t quite bring myself to throw any of it away, so here we are…

Hmm… Well it’s hard to really quantify that as I hope my characters will be reasonably well rounded, but I can say that many of the romantic options will have a vulnerable side. Echo in particular talks a good game and is positively brimming with bluster and defensive snark, but she’s not really prepared or ready to have an actual deep conversation where she bears her soul to someone, so there will be a great deal of shyness and misdirection as you get her to open up.

I hope that answers your question, but somehow I doubt it.

I think Finn just stares broodingly at you until you either start stripping or roll over to show your belly in submission. He’s a tad more direct and animalistic than your average noble.

Yeah, the actual character is if anything more disgusting. This scene went from 0 to 100 real quick.

Hmm… Well Engel is already an Augment by virtue of his gender, so that would make the most immediate sense… Maybe Nex or Nira… Hmm… I’ll think about that one.

I know what I’m doing for the launch party now.

Fort Pretty-Puppet?

All the Monarchists on the forum be like:

I purposely kept the Vovodans obscure to reinforce their status as a lost civilisation. The Pre-Fall Humans are meant to be something of an enigma, even I’m not completely sure what heights they rose to, or what they found out there that eventually destroyed them. The Sunken City is therefore a repository of everything that is forbidden and forgotten. Maybe they were isolationists, hoping to ride out the apocalypse at the bottom of the sea, maybe they were show-offs who wanted their home to have an exclusiveness protected by a few leagues of saltwater.

The point is that I don’t truly know, and that I may not want to know going forward.

You scandalous flatterer, never leave.

Also, I now fear that I must unearth the tantalising mystery that is your true name. Cooper! Fetch my thinking pipe!

It does leave open the possibility that “Arinthas Grand Plan” or “Arinthas’s Gambit” will be the ending chapter for all the different sub-stories, there are some hints of this in the magisters words in the prologue if you go the Rebel path and likely the noble one as well, and the mc just approaches it from a different angle and with different strengths and resources each time and of course providing a point of convergence is good for possible sequels as it keeps the headaches down a bit.

Don’t sell yourself short, you’re definitely one of the better authors around here!
But I get what you mean, will there be small points where the branches intersect (and provide a different angle on shared events) even before the final (chapter) though?

I’ve just finished reading the demo and loved it, It’s got a Terry Pratchett’s Discworld noir feel to it.

That is (however unknowingly) the nicest compliment anyone has ever paid my writing. Thank you.

That one is pretty good too. Incidentally, there is as yet no guarantee that Arinthas will return to the final chapter of the Noble and Rebel paths, you infer what you want but I’m not confirming it.

The Rebel path is already sort of intersecting with the Noble path in a big way because you’re rebelling against the Nobility itself, but there will be tacit acknowledgements that events from the other path have happened without you being there. If you’re on the Noble path, there will be consequences for the rebels as you are not there to help them. Likewise Lady Calinas’ plans will be thrown into disarray without you, and there will be run-on consequences.

In that case, I wish you the best of luck in writing what is essentially three separate games at once.

It sounds kinda like how some books and comics do what-if stories telling the story of what would have happened if X event had gone differently or Y character made a different decision. It would certainly be interesting after playing through one path to play another and see how different things could have gone for the characters you’ve gotten to know without the MC’s presence. It really puts a spotlight on the player’s agency and importance to the story and showcase how they affects the things and people around them.

I feel I can relate a bit to that. Will be interesting to meet her.

There is too little representation in media for characters who doesn’t fit on the traditional chromatic scale. :stuck_out_tongue:

You mean because they are a third gender? How physically different are androgynous people in this world? Are we talking herm, Ken doll, some sort of shape shifting, none of the above? I guess I had pictured more like reality where physical differences were minimal, more about sexual identity rather than biology.
